hey i just wanted to say that i've given up on mmo's as of right now. reasons for this are
Can anyone give me hope for an upcoming mmo?
I hear stuff about darkfall but all i can think of is how this game will have a lot of features but cant hold the players the game is expecting. therefore. laggg and choppiness and server crashes. Lets just pray it will start a new era of mmo's

It all depends what you are interested in. Describe what you like and I will suggest a game.
Also I could be wrong, but I don't think Darkfall will be that big. It's for people who are more into hardcore game play and judging from WoWs popularity most people aren't looking for that type.

A work in progress: (Update: 08/09/10)Easily find your favorite type of MMO
As a sandbox mmo advocate, and veteran swg player, I am keeping an eye on Earthrise. I haven't been following it much, but it sounds like they lifted many of the gameplay mechanics directly from pre-CU swg, and expanded on them. Stuff like skill point based character progression instead of levels which will allow you to profession dabble like the good old days in swg. "Deep crafting" which is going to be much more complex than crafting in anything else we have seen since swg. The best items in the game will be crafted, and rare due to the ingredient drops being rare (RAID bosses).
If you haven't looked into it, you should. Sounds very cool, and it's a complete break away from the crap being called MMO's today. I want it to succeed if for no other reason than to show the dildo game developers out there that it's ok to go ahead and make a "differen't" game, and that you can make good money on niche mmos.
Look at Eve. If that game isn't a successful niche game, I don't know what is.
I don't know of any other sandbox games in development, but I am also keeping an eye on Star Trek, Stargate, and SWTOR because I am a sci-fi fan.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
If you're quitting MMO's, can I have yer stuff?
I will pwn joo in Darkfall cuz u r a noob, an I r l33t.
haha no you cant have my game accounts :P i have one in every p2p and nearly all the 'playable' f2p's haha. So earthrise is going to be like pre-cu swg? yay! that was by far the greatest mmo ever, past and present. every part of that game i loved. And i love sandbox games by the way. Your talking to a master creature handler here
There are good mmos, wow is good, but if your tired of it then just wait for guildwars 2, other than that there is nothing forseeable on the horizon.

I gotta agree. The genre is stagnating so badly, I'm seriously considering sticking to console games for a while. Everything is the same, and after Warhammer being so dissapointing I have nothing to look forward to. It seems like everything is either low budget crap or an adaptation of the WoW grindfest formula. It's sad when you can pick up pretty much any MMO and be decent at it in an hour because it plays just like everything else. Nothing new is being brought to the table.
I remember SWG at launch and how much fun PvP was before the hologrind ruined the game, or even Dark Age and the great group battles. Now everyone is trying to get that "casual gamer" and making games which are wattered down to hell and focused on the individual rather than any sort of community. Darkfall might be alright, but I doubt it ever comes out. I guess you can't blame the industry for taking the safe route, but it's sad when the best MMO that came out this year was probably NHL 09's online mode.
Half of the people on my myspace are friends I met playing SWG. After the NGE we all went to WoW together, and it was a lot of fun for awhile. Interest trickled off over time, and we started trying out new MMOs without any luck. I really thought about WotLK because it has been about a year since I've played WoW, and I'm kind of starved for a game again, but nobody has interest in WoW or the genre.. short of Darkfall turning out to be somewhat interesting, I think we all are done.
Me too. I haven't played a MMO in like over a year
What is perceived to be 'good' is purely subjective. I would agree that WoW is a good game personally. But I realise it is also disliked by a very large number of people.
Much of what is available on the market feels 'samey'. From WAR to WoW to LotrO to Vanguard. There is nothing revolutionary on the horizon - even Darkfall follows the same general pattern with different bells, whistles and mechanics.
Okay heres the list of p2p games ive played
WoW + THB expansion
Warhammer
SWG pre/post CU
Guild Wars (all expansions)
Vanguard
Lord of the Rings online, not the new expansion
Everquest 2
CoH/CoV
Tabula Rasa
Currently playing: NONE
Im not sure if i missed any, but this is what im talking about haha. I shouldnt have to go through this amount of games to find the one i like.
Most of these games are basically the same, some have strayed from the normal group, like Guild Wars with its 100% instanced area minus towns. (i really hate it , i think it makes the game less of an mmo because you are rarely with people, except PvP and talking to guildies)
CoH/CoV got my attention for a while but after 30ish levels i found the game extremely repetetive. Quests were all the same, go to a warehouse, kill thugs, and repeat.
Tabula Rasa was a cool idea with the space scifi theme but man those servers were empty. I rarely saw anyone in towns.
The Best game to me personally is SWG because all the options a player had, crafting was great, fighting was great, mounts/vehicles were great, creature handler was great and the overall game was just... great. Too bad SOE screwed it
