I'm not looking to flame WAR... and I'm not looking for a fight... but I'd like to know....
Those of you who are enjoying WAR... what is your MMO history? I REALLY wanted to enjoy this game but I just couldnt do it... The scenarios ruined PvP (just like BG's in WoW), the world PvP that does happen is basically just a rolling battle back and forth.... the same thing over and over and over.... kill a bunch of people... die... respawn... repeat.
The PvE is 90% single player.... which I guess is fine if all you care about is the PvP aspect. PQ's and the few dungeons there are dont come close to the group content WoW offers (with instanced dungeons for every level range).
The classes and combat just don't have any spark, the world is nice but is very linear...
Overall it seems like a less refined WoW with better graphics and a PvP focus (meaning less content).
Now dont get me wrong, I dont think WAR is terrible... its just bland and not as refined as the competition... so why play it? The only reason I can think of is Keeps....
So what makes the game good to you?

Very reasonable question. I was only able to play for the first month. Just like you I didn't feel any "spark" when I played it.
It takes no risk and it offers no risk.
WAR is the epitomy of taking the "easy" road in MMO development. It just feels linear and it just feels restricted. It does everything pretty well and nothing very well.
It runs pretty smoothly though. All in all, it's just boring and repetitive. But it's a smooth boring and repetitive...
All that said, it's not the worst MMO I've ever played and it's not the best. It's right no par with the WoW-formula and it does nothing to innovate the industry.
However, the rabid fanbase here will flame this post and yours calling us "haters" and foolish because we disagree with their views. They will then move on to the next game and do the same when people give their opinions in those respective titles.
My MMO experience starts with UO, EQ, Pre-CU SWG, WoW, CoH/CoV, and others. The only games I have played for very long were UO, Pre-CU SWG, WoW (several months), and none since then. I played Age of Conan for a month when it came out but it was poorly developed.
Tecmo Bowl.
This about sums up my opinion, in a polite manner
Will start with my history, I played EQ1, EQ2, WoW, CoH/CoV, Vanguard, LoTRO, PotBS, AoC, and now WAR. I am somewhat of a MMO junkie, but when I finmd one that I like, I play it for a few years usually like EQ1, WoW, and LoTRO.
I played CE BETA in WAR and was really thinking that this was going to be the game to fill my addictive self for a few years, but like the OP I am now feeling like it is very repetetive no matter what class or race I play. Crafting is not very polished and very easy, as is levelling and PvE. I am currently thinking of returning to games I tried in the past, but not sure for how long I will stick with WAR, at this point if I finish the month I will be shocked.
History: NWN (aol), UO, AO, AC, DAoC, Planetside, CoH, CoV, SWG, WoW, DDO, GW, EVE, LOTRO, PoTBS, AoC, WAR
With the exception of AO and AoC, which I didn't find any value in at all, I got a fair amount of enjoyment out of all the mmos I played. I do not go into any game with any particular expectations, each has their own strengths and weaknesses and as long as you stay impartial and fair in your evaluation you can get your moneys worth from them for at least a month so you dont feel like you wasted your money.
My current favorite is WAR. I've been playing since january in beta and paid for a 3 month sub at release. I will reevaluate my fun at the end of that and see if i want to keep going. Its very possible that I will.
The speed of level advancement feels just right, the ease of finding groups takes out all the annoying waiting around, and from lvl 1 to 40 I never once ran out of quests or rvr content. I like that pvp advances you, I like the way guilds themselves gain experience and open up new guild options. I think keep takes and open rvr is a blast if you have a good guild to roll with (I do) and for times that there arent enough people doing open rvr (rare on my server), scenerios are good filler. I've found good tactics always wins the day over mindless zerging, especially at max level when everyone is on a level playing field.
I find each class to have unique mechanics to them with a nice variety, and also like the rock paper scissors setup that encourages good group makeups and intelligent target decisions. People that don't know how to play... it becomes quickly obvious based on the choices they make in pvp. Class balance is really not all that bad, though some things could use some work here and there. A lot of my concerns have already been addressed in patches, like the magus's OP magnet ability. And a lot of whats left is going to be fixed in the upcoming patch, based on the patch notes.
WAR runs great on my pc, rarely have any crashes or stuttering, and have been in many 200+ person sieges. To be honest I never experienced that kind of scale and performance in all the other games i played.
I don't find any other games doing anything better atm, WoW is too old to enjoy at this point, its the same thing I've been doing off and on for the past 4 years and the pvp is rather shallow and meaningless, even with the new expansion. For WoW's pve 100 different variations for killing 15 boars just doesn't cut it anymore, and raiding has to be the most mind numbing thing I've ever experienced.. the days of loot being the be-all-end-all just don't hold my interest. And don't get me started on the behavior of the WoW fanbase, many of whom I think behave very poorly here on the boards. Makes me want to distance myself from them and the game, even though for the first year I did enjoy it.
I'm sorry you dont find the same enjoyment I do with WAR, I'm not here to convince you that you are in any way wrong, if you dont like it you dont like it, just answering your question. But I think all the same criticisms you listed about WAR could just as easily be applied to most other mmos, WoW included. The same thing over and over, 90% single player, classes not having any spark, linear world, etc.
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.
markoraos said it right.
EQ, EQ2, wow, L2 and now WAR. I have been waiting for a solid pvp MMO since EQ in '99 and so far I am loving WAR. I hate raiding, I prefer solo or small groups for PVE and love pvp as a central theme. L2 could have been a great game, but dam they messed up so many little things and that really hurt that game IMO. Anyways, I think WAR will continue to grow and keep a solid playerbase if they continue to add content and patch often -- which I expect they will do.
I agree. Heck of a post.
Hated older MMORPGs because they were tedious timesinks. Played WoW, CoH, CoV, Guild Wars and LotRO. Tried less successful ones like Saga of Ryzom, Auto Assault etc.
One simple reason why I play it, the combat is simply more fun for me. Many reasons for it - amoung them collision detection, interesting classes, abilities and group dynamics.
If I never have to watch an enemy player run through my character as though they were a ghost then bunny-hop around me as they kill me in a couple of hits, then I will be happy.
Keep your pants on, I mean everyone has an opinion but damn...
With my experience of the game I completely disagree with everything you've said, but I'm glad to see you're enjoying it as much as I wished I could.
The first two posts pretty much sum up the way I've felt, WAR turned me off MMOs, (which is probably a good thing lol) and now I find myself just looking towards singleplayer titles for a while.
O_o o_O
I've played every Western MMO game since UO through WAR.
I love the idea of WAR. The execution is lacking, though.
I really want to like it. I still play with my friends. The problem is, I play MMO games to socialize and play with other people. Maybe I'm just in a bad area right now. But T2 is almost always empty. When I do PQs it's just me and my two friends. We might see 1 person. They might join in. And after it's done they always leave.
We play pretty late. Starting at midnight or later Eastern time. This may explain the total lack of people in the game world, but on my days off I log in at around 6-8 pm est. and there's still hardly anyone around.
The problem, for me, is that the world is just too freakin' big for all of the various group content in the game. I like when I can see 100+ people on my screen no matter where I go. I would love to have more than two or three people join me in a PQ. But it just doesn't happen.
I'm assuming that it gets better at T4 because that's the only thing that keeps me playing. If I get to 30+ and there's still no one around, I will cancel my account.
PS: I hate Scenarios.
Edit: I really enjoy the gameplay. A LOT! Way more than WoW. I only wish I had other people to enjoy it with.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Games I've played for more then 6 months
WoW = 7 months
Conquer Online = 2 and a Half years
Zero Online = 7 months
GW = 2 years and counting
Now, I have played many games for 2-3 months, some just weeks, those are games like Rapplz, Tantra, Perfect World , Etc etc. (I played at least a good 60 pct of the games listed on this sight that are free, I like Item malls oppose to Subs)
Now for why I find it fun, sure this just like every other mmo out there with a new paint job,. But thats exactly it, a new look, new classes, new fights, new zones. To me games like this are new expansions from other games, thats how I look at it. I love PVP and MMO's. There is very few games I call awful, because when it boils down to it, all mmo's are grinds, its how it can be spun.
I love grinding, nothing like achieving something. To me the grinding makes me feel I earned it. WAR may not have lots of it, but WAR gives me the chance to grind xp through PVP, and it rocks. The PVE in WAR is just as good as any other game. I can't see why people trash it. The quests are all kill X amount, go here, go there, blah blah. But the battle Dynamics (actions of skills) are beatiful, and new to me.
So basically what I am saying is this game is fun because its a new look, like an expansion to every other game iPlayed with a complete revamp of classes, skills and zones.
I play MMO's, I love mmo's for what they are, and do no try and turn them into something that fits my needs, cause thats selfish, If someone doesn't like it move on. A game is only gonna be as good as you want it to be, stop comparing and just play the damn game for what it is. Instanced or Open PVP. Thats it.
Enjoy : )
In a word, the people. So far the community has been asshole free. And my guild Memphis on Monolith has some of the best!
Waiting for the next thing
DAoC for four (ish) years, taste of WoW for a month or two, LoTR for nine months, WAR since launch.
I love the backstory, but then I have been GW fan for twenty (ish) years. Mythic have had flashes of genius in their impliementation of the Warhammer world; seeing the Troll come to life (which I spent so long painting) was a moving experience
Biggest complaint is no one doing, ORvR and PQs. Well someone posted, spam, spam, spam until you get players. Recently we ended up with two large BG in the space of 30 mins doing this to take some T2 stuff. Personally I am not keen on starting groups and taking charge and being a leader; however, it does work with a bit of effort.
Quests, varied and much of the agro of locating (object A) has been removed, even the wife can do quests, and she can bug them just by looking at them.
Scenarios are definately fast food, and too much of them is definately going to be toxic; however I am sure that Mythic is very actively looking at this - after all they have a lot invested in this game.
Two new class shortly, successful public events, lot of fixes for issues and changes to balance - give this game some time and I do feel it will be classic. My only big complaint is that I can't pan the camera up and down from the keyboard - fix this, and I will definatly be a happy gobbo.
I guess if your in a big guild or have 5-6 friends that regularly play with you it can be a fun game, otherwise the two first posts sum's it up pretty good... PQ's are empty, Dungeons are just big PQ's which are also empty, Open RvR is empty, Scenarios do pretty good but playing the same map over and over again becomes tedious and boring...
Crafting is a joke and there is no economy in the game, money is useless...
I played the game two months, the first two Tiers were awesome but once you get to tier 3 and tier 4 you soon see those tiers are just copies of the first two tiers, just bigger... basically the game is just one huge PQ....
Sums up my thoughts 100%. I was anticipating WAR more than any other MMO and I have been playing MMO's since 2000 with another 16 years of gaming behind that. It has been the biggest disappoint to date but it could be due to my expectations being so high. Reiterating what a lot of other members are saying, the game in short is far too vanilla for me. Combat to narrow, death penalty means nothing and it feels like it was made for players who hate PvP because it seems way too easy. Beyond that I was a little surprised to see the average graphics and poor sound. I expected with all the marketing and glossy introduction videos the game would have at least addressed graphics etc.
However I would say that if I could play in the same region as my close friends then I would probably stick it out for 2-3 months just so I could chat on TS.
Now I am just focusing on the Indie titles coming out. Darkfall and Jumpage Evolution for me.
I've played most mmo's out there, and enjoyed EQ2 , DAOC, and WAR.
Most of your criticisms are invalid.

How is his opinion invalid, what because you don't agree with him?
O_o o_O
My MMO history:
EQ1 (launch to Ykesha), DAoC, SWG (early, pre-CU/NGE days), Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call, CoH/CoV, beta tests for Earth & Beyond, WW2 Online, Sims Online, Asheron's Call 2 Tabula Rasa, and Auto Assault, played Vanguard in open beta then for a 10 day trial back at launch, WoW, EQ2, Age of Conan, and LOTRO.
Currently, WAR is my primary game, but I have active, open accounts with LOTRO (lifetime sub) and CoH/CoV, both of which I've been playing since closed beta.
What makes WAR fun for me is the RvR and PvP. In all the games I've played, I've always gone out of my way to avoid PvP because of the asshole PK's and gankers I've found in all of them, and the general immaturity I experienced on PvP servers, particularly back when I played EQ. I don't mind a reasonably fair fight, but some high level wanker with too much time on his hands slaughtering lower level players because he can? No thanks.
Because of the PvP/RvR aspects, I never expected to play, much less enjoy WAR, but it's fun. There's enough with the Tome unlocks and the PQ's to satisfy my obsessive habit of completing quests and tasks in an MMO, and the PvP and RvR keep things from getting monotonous. I prefer open world PvP to scenarios, since I can just go through and play the game my way then break things up by joining a warband to go and capture keeps or battleground objectives, and fighting anyone from the other faction I see along the way. Scenarios are okay every once in a while, but I'd rather have fun out in the game world itself.
I like it. For now, it's holding my interest. When it stops being fun, I'll quit.
I've played most mmo's out there, and enjoyed EQ2 , DAOC, and WAR.
Most of your criticisms are invalid.

I don't agree that many of the statements and conclusions he made are valid.
Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.
AC2 - got pretty high, then they shut it down. Great community.
WoW - played from release till they introduced BGs (6 mo) which ended world-pvp so i quit.
EQ2 - maxed out a toon, then maxed thru 2 or 3 expansions. Good guild. Good pve game.
LOTRO - maxed out a toon then quit. Zero endgame.
I enjoy WAR. But then, I'm playing with 4 RL friends. We get on, we have instant group. We do PQs, Scenarios, Quests, and oRVR. Mixing it up is key to this game imo. I HATE soloing in MMOs....
But I LOVE to solo in single player rpg games... i've probably played them all, (real long list)
MMO history: RS, GW, LOTRO, WOW, and WAR
I played my chosen to 40, i liked the lvl'ing part, maybe cause i dont mind the grind it is... as said earlier in this thread, all the quests is kill x of monster y... or talk to x at y... i did quests, PQ's and alot of PvP, and i only did in chaos line... i hate flying back and forth to do quests..
but when i hit 40 it became very boring to me... yes i could go for 80 Renown Rank... but after 45 RR theres no point in doing scenarios cause you wont get much renown from it.. that leaves you to do 3 things... do PQ's for purple and yellow bags, which can take forever if your an unlucky roller, go instance if you can find a good group, only to find some of the end game instances is bugged and some Monsters dont lose health when hit, so you try to work around the bugs which only makes the instance take 2 hours longer, and if your unlucky u didnt get any loot... or the 3rd thing is oRVR... its usually easy to find a group for oRvR but, either destro and order is in different zones to hijack, or the side you are on is owning everything there is to own... aand your back to scens.... :P
this game have nice GFX, nice combat system indeed... but the game just failed >>> IMO!!!! <<< If you like it and is happy with playing it, then good for you...
Beazt
You can see my history in my tag below. I was with WOW at the beinging (Beta) and loved it for the first couple of years and still think it is a great game for others but after BC I felt it went down hill and I always felt it missed the warfare aspect of it and it never really has been a war in the sense of huge armies.
This was the hope of WAR the problem is they left to much of the control up to the player's it really is a team game and not a 1V1 or best gear wins game like WOW is most of the time for PVP. Being a 20+ year table top player I will give it a couple of months before I will retire WAR, Mythic just might make it if they retool some of the aspects of the game. I just can't see myself starting over in WOW as it is to much of a level grinde. If Darkfall ever comes out maybe that will be the next great thing one can only hope.
I must say thats an intelligent question as to what is our mmo history
As such my 1st mmo not even a mmo was guild wars .I got so used to play in groups that I hate solo play .
So after guild wars and its expansions died out I started venturing out to other mmos .I didnt enjoy wow as it was too much solo play which I didnt Like
War has elements like guild wars , instanced scenarios is group play and fun and I enjoy it a lot as simple
2nd is time factor with work and family life dont get much time to be on the computer So I need soemthing quick I can have fun with in a hour
With WAR i am able to log in do some scenarios in a hour level up . do some public quest .More like instant gratification and fun.
I tried AOC but lack of immersion and dullness was the feeling I had so opted out..
Again I tried POTBS and I liked RVR in it .
So I guess I like games which can be short dosage of insta fun , have RVR component and invoves group activities.
My first MMORPG was Anarchy Online. Played for maybe a year. I played WoW off and on for a total of about two years. The other MMORPGs I've played for at least three months were Star Wars Galaxies, Lord of the Rings Online, City of Heroes and Eve Online. I've at least tried just about every other major MMORPG over the years and a few minor ones.
I'm still enjoying WAR a lot. I see the flaws. Some will need to be fixed for me to say there is a good chance I will still be here in six months. However, it's a solid game that supports many different playstyles.
I think one problem with giving people various paths to level and additional areas of focus to earn achievements is that some people will end up picking the wrong path for themselves and then find the game lacking.
I've seen a lot of comments about PvE being bad, or the game world not immersive. I find the opposite on both counts, but I can see how someone who plays mostly scenarios, then tries to hop into the world with the shortened attention span that scenarios can instill in you, would find otherwise.
Mythic isn't with out blame in these areas though. As is, there is a huge imbalance in advancement rate for doing scenarios vs. approaching the game from any other direction. They would be well served making Questing and Grinding more rewarding, as well as adding further incentives for constructive RvR outside of scenarios.
