Considering the cover story for PC Games I'm surprised there isn't more in this forum about it. Maybe I just needed to go to next page of posts to see it. I figured there'd be tons of "told you so"s and opinions about the new Bioware MMO. Maybe it's in the general SWG forum. Well, according the the exclusive, SWG will continue to exist alongside Star Wars Old Republic. The way people will become connected with good or evil sounds interesting. Not sure if it will be anything I'm interested in compared to the original SWG but will continue to keep eye on it.

The NGE will shut down within days to weeks of SWTOR's launch. Consider that the majority of even the current subscribers hate it but play it because it's Star Wars, they will bolt for the alternative.

They have been saying that The NGE SWG will close down for years take a rest .

how many other star wars mmorpgs launched in those years?
Once SWTOR releases Sony will be forced to just completely shut down SWG, no one will be playing it any more. Or they just might put who is still playing it and put them all on one server. And it will still be a very low populated server.

Very true, but.........he does have a point. It is well known that a lot of people who still play SWG do so because it's the only SW mmo in town. I am one of these people. I am not presumptuous enough to make a wild guess like a lot of the dead horse beaters on here though. I guess only time will tell........

Most people who play SWG now also are folks who hate cartoony style graghics and when the game comes out will most certainly will be similar to wow. I predict there will be a few people that will go check it out and return back to SWG. Plus there are those who like the current Movie timelines and will not be able to associate the 2 timelines. Some likr the current timeline because its what they have come to love.I am not in anyway suggesting it will be a failure, simply that they will be completly different games.
There is no reason for swg to stay active once SW:TOR comes out. The only reason they are saying those things now, that they think the games can coexist. Is because the new star wars is some time away. Personally this rectifies everything and all the bs that the game has put everyone through. They are just milking whats left of a pay to play gamer.

You're probably right that a lot (likely the majority) of players will put SWG on hold and go check out SWTOR. The problem is that by doing so, they are not guaranteeing SOE they will return. All SOE knows is that people are leaving. When that happens, they'll freak out (as they have in the past) and do one of two things...
1) revamp the game (people leaving to go check out WoW when it was launched returned to SWG to find it was drastically different, which ironically, drove them back to WoW).
or
2) Sunset it, as the fact of the matter is nobody on the outside knows how many more subs SWG can actually stand to lose. Smed himself said he's not sure what's going to happen.
My take on the 'we have no intentions of closing SWG down when TOR launches'...
Of COURSE they're going to say that. Saying otherwise would be suicide. MMOs by their nature are games in which you invest so much time, energy and most of all, money. By telling people that there's an end in sight is telling people that SWG is a bad place to invest their efforts. Anyone who takes that quote at face value is franky seeing only what they want to see and not the obvious truth.
Anyone who tells you SWTOR is not a huge threat to SWG is lying to you.
The ONLY way that SOE could keep SWG alive post SWTOR release would be to ditch the NGE and go classic.
And they know it.
They won't be allowed to do it of course.
Assuming SWTOR is worst case scenario, that the graphics are overly cartoony, that the gameplay is NGE like, even with that the NGE still dies the day it's released. They couldn't do a NGE game worse than the NGE even if they tried.
Well they could if they put the "Dork Lord Heliass" or "Toilet Boy" in charge.
