Is this the game for me?

Hey everyone,

I started out in Everquest and got all the way to level 65 with my druid then kinda stopped after my friends quit and so other factors. Then I moved to WoW which was ok, i guess, but not as good as EQ 1 so I went on to EQ 2 which I got a troubadour up to 78 on Butcherblock.

The reason I told you all that useless information is because I was wondering if this game would be good for me since I like Everquest and they are pretty much dead now so I'm looking for a new game to play.

Would appreciate any insight you may have....

Thank,

Xiacb (1st mmorpg character in EQ 65 Druid Solusek Ro)

    This game is pretty dead.

No real support. No endgame. Empty servers.

    Try something else.

AoC is far from dead, but before the servers are merged, you should do some research into which are the more populated servers if you plan to start now.

From your previous choices it sounds like you want a large game with deep character progression and a lot of content to explore.

If so I think you would be rather dissapointed with Age of Conan. It's has a short leveling curve (max out in 2-5 weeks for an average player), a limited leveling / quest progression (re-rolls you will do exact same areas / quests again). And currently their is a serious lack of end-game content.

First thing is, the last post doesnt really help because the game isn't dead for starters.

I will try and give some key points on this game.

I have been playing for 7 months since launch and I came close to quitting a few times.  However the lack of anything else plus semi quick patches coming out kept me going.  I am glad now because like most MMO's the 6 month mark has stabilised the game so its pretty much free of CTD's and any other annoying technical bug.

As far as gameplay goes you can either go solo or group.  This goes for PvP and PvE.  I know because i have solo'd my way up to level 74 and I have also leveled up with a guild as well.

Graphics, music and the general environment is the best in the MMO industry today as it stands.

Combat post level 25 becomes quite in-depth and its nice to see an MMO that allows you to win fights based on what you do and be able to swing the tide.

Crafting is more gathering than mini game.  You just need to find the resources and complete a series of constructions to level up.  I would like a Vanguard type mini game but its not as in-depth as that.  However they are focusing on this area and have made some decent improvements recently.

The game has instances but its funny how people complained about them and then asked for them because it became annoying having another group come in and steal the kills.  The open areas vary from large to huge. There have been occasions where I have played for 5-7 hours and never seen a loading screen.

You will need a decent PC to play the game properly.

Missions vary between, 'kill 10 rats' type to some pretty interesting storylines.  E.g. a storyline I found interesting was to hunt down 4 assassins and then find their leader and kill him.   There is a single player storyline that has some pretty special moments.  Mostly I dont mind the kill 10 rat type since the combat and fatalities are quite fun to watch.

Its hard to say if the game is for you or not as it depends what parts you fancied in EQ.  If you are a hard core crafter and want to do nothing else then the game may not be enough for you but as far as I am concerned there is plenty to do and after 7 months there is a lot I havent done still.  Then again I dont play 20 hours a day either.

    Hope this helps.

This is NOT the game for you.  I see that you really liked EQ and this is about as far from that experience as you can get.

Suggestion, and from the short description you gave : Try Ryzom I saw some other people posting about it a while back and downloaded it and am having a wonderful time.  There is a work around for the create account bug... Its kind of a test since the game is in a second round of beta after being purchased from the bankrupt former company/owners.

Its got a faction system, dedicated FFA PVP and flag and PVP options.  The other night I was harvesting in Dyron and this massive battle between two groups of players erupted all around me.  What a blast harvesting and deathmatch in one.

The resource gathering and crafting system are the most in depth I have ever seen.  Its a grinder type game, but there is no rush. Everything in the game is player made, though you can buy crappy stuff from the vendors to grind.  All items degrade in combat, death and even when you craft.  You can craft all kinds of gear and anyone can be all things and professions in the game. There are no 'Classes'.  You can restructure your spell arrangements on the fly.  You have actions which have a cost and credits which cost direct sap, stamina, focus and others that slow casting time and the like to balance the stanza for casting.  So if you are going to be a primary rear flank healer you can choose to have the heal spell you cast take more HP and SAP since you can charge heal one another after the battle.  if you are going to be casting offensively and doing healing you can again, on the fly, change the stanza to suit those needs more clearly and drain more sap leaving you more life with which to absorb dmg.  This is true of all skill sets.  All told the max level in the game is 250 and there 64 possible trees to work up to that level.

You can choose to be Kami, Karavan and Nuetral.  You can also do fame missions with races and factions to afford you better sale prices and slightly reduced commisions on items sold to player through the AH and the direct trash loot sales.

Much more to go into, but this sounds more to you liking than the conan type thing.  You will start on an island and you will need help to get the hang of the system as it is fairly in depth and complex.  The universe channel is full of people that gladly talk you through just about anything.

The graphics are a bit dated but the system behind this game is extremely complex and as of today the game is still free to play, though that may change soon....

The fame missions can be a nice distraction and really fun to do in groups.  You can level any part of the skill systems as you choose.  If you like melee 2handers then you can max that without having to worry about doing anything else. You will however be at a disadvantage compared to a player that has leveled other areas like magic as he will have better stats and such.... But the game is open ended and its all up to you...

They feature Apartments and Guildhalls and Packers. Apartments only you can enter though you can stable the packers or have them follow you to a nice resource rich location and park them in the water ( safety) and then dodge between them and the fields offloading your materials or craft at the packer. Anyone can own 3 packers once they have arrived on the mainland. The same applies with apartments except I think you can only have one apartment but there is no level required.

Anyway I love that my machine will support an 80 vrs 80 battle with little or no lag.  Our first attempt to capture an outpost was a dismal failure though we still had a blast.

I currently play AoC and I think this game is great for many reasons. I would love to hear more about why you quit WOW as that might tell us more about what AoC might add to your experience. Anyway, content wise I have only been able to level 1 character to lvl 80 in 6 months. I still have tons of stuff left to do in the game and would therefore think that this game is more than good contentwise. I mean you should be a mean fckr of a MMO player if you can finish this off in less than 4 months. Then again remember that AoC has that crazy Murder system with playercities going which basically is a neverending endgame story so I can't really see where content comments are coming from.

Another thing, considering you are a EQ fan I think you'll like the many feats and the many ways a character can optimize his character. I enjoy playing with that stuff anyway. Finally  I'll say with backing from 2 hefty patches coming in over the next month, this game is right on for you.

PS the incoming patches: Adds tons of new itemization, the other one with   2-3 pure new playfield areas in +75-80 range.

Game doesn't have grind and lacks multiable outlets for raiding. You'll be better off playing Vanguard.

Goes back to the played "5 mins 5 months ago" and this is what the game was like and still is like, this is what I use to back up my statement of leaving mentality ever so present these days. And thats why there are the couple of lines posts that don't specify why, because they don't have current in game knowledge.

I think the game offers a good fit for the OP's style and if really in doubt then get a buddy key maybe?

I came to AoC from EQ2 myself. There are some big differences, like the combat is more fast paced and you have fewer skills. On the other hand is the combat system not bad and the game looks really great if you have a high end computer.

I think you should try it out. Played a Swashie in EQ2 and running my ranger in AoC right now. Reason I quited in may was because I kinda burned out on it.

But server choice is important in AoC, there are a big difference between servers and servers. For EU server I reccomend Crom (PvE) or Fury (PvP). For Us server, you have to ask someone else. I play mostly on Crom myself.

  • AznmaskAznmask Member Posts: 178

age of conan is not dead from Lv1- 39. But after Lv20+ you wont be able to find a server with more than 2 instance. BTW i play in Tyranny server (second highest population in pvp server)

Unless you still in the Lv1-20 Tortage which in a peak time there might have 2 instance, But then the game is more like solo.

end content is not enough after you lv80,

PVP system is screwed right now, (major reason why i quit)

    server merge is not happen,

I would like to see meaningful pvp content myself. Killing for the sake of killing gets boring really fast.

After reading the director's newsletter and browsing forums and reading all the patch notes I can say I`ll be giving the game a try by the end of the month. And I hope the server merges will happen next month.

    Welcome

Still, aim for one of the servers with good population right now. Maybe we see you around.

Now,I`ll have to check if my rig will be able to run it decently(I don't expect to run it on high). So what can I expect with this config:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+

    2 X 7800GT 256Mb

    2 gig memory

    Sata 2 HDD
