MMORPG vs MMOG

I have a question... Why do so many games call themselves MMORPGs when in fact it's most likely a MMIOGs than anything else ?

Example ? : World of Warcraft :

Tell me where exactly can you find and RPG in there ?? ohhh yeah playing a troll ... night elf ... gnome...

That's not what I call RPGs...

Everybody basically follow the exact same line... Everybody basically do the same quests...

And most of the games that are out right now... Everybody does the same and there is no place for "RPG" cause you can't even talk with the other faction... (Horde / Alliance)

Star Wars Galaxies... (Before dumbing CU and NGE)

The total Opposite... this was mainly a RPG... Everything was driven by players.

Armor could be so different... Like an ArmorSmith (AS) was saying they might all look the same but in fact were all different in stats under the cap

And there was place also for "stories" to be created... not a line that everybody took to get where they were...

No LEVEL !!!!! Was one of the best thing... You never knew what you were fighting against...

Is there any games that are still RPG or their all on the streamline of WoW and basically a Massive Multi-Player Online Game

Because the PR people thinks that it sounds better.

Do you have any more questions?

I wish that there were more non rpg MMOG's with persistent worlds that didn't pretend to be rpgs, games like WWII online but up to date.  I'm not really into roleplaying but I like games with persistent worlds and avatars and mmorpgs seem to be the only option.

    A good example would www.beyondprotocol.com/phpnuke/html/

Devs should make more games like this, that way rpg fans could have thier games without people like me imposing myself on them and breaking thier immersion.  Maybe the customer base isn't large to split like this though, if did happen I think rpg games would come off worst population wise.

Very good post, I am actually wondering this myself. Very few games have the RPG aspect of it. And even less do it right. I think Guild wars, with a story told in cinematics making you the star of it, taking you tru a big story as you progress, not being the side line thing. makes it a RPG. It also has tons of players so there's your Massive. Its multiplayer so there's that. And it is online..so For those who think GW is not a MMORPG, Its prob more of a mmo(RPG) than most games out there.

It is just semantics. It is what eveyrone else call a RPG. There is no point of arguing. A word means what most people think it means.

Diablo is also called an action RPG .. it is an accepted usage of the term.

I think you got the definition wrong. The RP in MMORPG doesn't stand for roleplaying in the meaning of "making choices based on a fictional personality."

The RP is part of RPG, which indicates a game system based on 1. character advancement, and 2. leaving success of actions to chance and the abilities of the character.

most games labelled as RPG are actually just other genre with some nuances of true role-playing. problem is that role-playing is not as easily transferrable to comercial product, because it requires active and creative participants. at best, it can be niche product, as was proven by many mud/mush/moo.

as for myself, i have always (since Diablo) considered "RP" to be something invented by PR as sell point for "action game with stats", and "role-playing" something that happenes between small group of friends just having fun with imagination.

regarding role-playing in WoW: it happens, if you look for it. there are RP and RP/PvP realms that proudly carry their titles, even while only handful of people trully role-plays. but, as said, it's all about what players make themselves, and lack of support from Blizzard is disappointing.

If I am understanding the poster, the purpose of having indicators such as levels is to distinguish between characteristics that can't be described in other ways in the virtual world. Maybe if games didn't offer super-elite armor graphics for level 5 gear then people wouldn't need a level indicator to differentiate between a level 5 and a level 80. It is a toss up.

I agree with your first statement but not for the same reasons.  Yes WoW is a very linear game and lacks any player created content.  Making a game in a fantasy setting also does not merit it a RPG title.  Crafting was very simple if not boring in WoW but then again an elaborate crafting system has never been a prerequisite of a RPG either.  Now I'll stop bashing WoW for a minute...

On the other hand I don't think you need a complete "sandbox" style game for it to be considered an RPG.  A quest orientated system can work.  As long as all of the quests are optional and they do branch depending on your decisions that way not everyone follows the same story line.  I never played SWG so I can't comment on it.

Character progression though (levels or something equivalent), is something I've always associated with a RPG.  I want my character to change over time in appearance, abilities, goals, enemies and surrondings.

Most people say EVE is a very good player driven game.  I didn't like it because of the sci-fi theme.  Ryzom is also a great player driven RPG with a great community albeit very very small.

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.”

WoW was the begining of the end of the MMORPG industry. Its no longer about persistant worlds, commubnity, player socializing and interaction, choices, or freedom.

Its all about the treadmill, and the game handing out all the rewards it can to keep you playing.

WAAAAAAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAAA BLIZZARD KNOCKED OVER MY SANDCASTLE IN MY SANDBOX.

But seriously, do we need another sandbox QQ post on this forum.

    We get it, enough already.

You are not a pretty unique snowflake.

Nothing you just said is new or unique or interesting.

Go back to crying and praying for the game you want but will never come.

First of all I'll just tell you to go away if you don't want to discuss about it... I wanted to know what people were thinking about MMORPG (that are infact not really RPG)

Second if the only thing you have to say is QQ more you can continu your way... I do not give a crap...

Third If you're saying that everybody should comply to what the majority like... well you're wrong... Thing is that most of the people don't know anything else... If nobody talk about it... there is no chance that it will change !!!

I'm not asking for a full sandbox game... I'm asking for a game with diversity... Cause games like WOW has close to NONE diversity... in the end everybody gets the same Armor... if they could AT LEAST implement maybe a different color set... That would be nicer... Everybody in T5 that look exactly the same ... it's lame...

Since they implemented the "Token" to get your equipment ... the Vendor that would sell you the equipment should give you a choice of different color so llike that many people could have the same armor ... and nobody would look the same... This already would be better !!!

As for the game type it self... The idea that was brought that it could be Quest driven is good indeed... That quests could be ended in many different ways...

For example a "carrying" quest could be finished by delivering to thing to somebody... or to go to the autorithy and tell them it's smuggling and get the other guy arrested... And change you Faction !!! This already could be more interesting...

For the role playing... I think you can't really role play if the opposite faction cannot be talked to in some way... You will never feel the hatred if you can't hear them ...

If WoW gives you such a hard on WTF are you doing in this thread?  Go play you-know-what with the rest of the simpletons who need explicit instructions for every second they are in game lest they burst into tears.

The RPG in MMORPG has absolutely nothing to do with game mechanics and everything to do with players themselves. Whether the game is sandbox or linear has nothing to do with it. All the developers can do is supply an atmosphere conducive to RP but it's ultimately up to the players to actually do it. The problem is these days people take these games way to serious to RP. You can make a game the most RP friendly game ever but if the players choose not to RP than the game just wont have it. This is all about a player's choice to RP or not and has absolutely nothing to do with game mechanics what-so-ever.

5 Years ago or so i used to play PnP RPGs. It was at that time that i came to the conclusion that every game was in its core an RPG.

This was so because the core idea of Role Playing was to get in the shoes of a specific character. Therefore, when you play Resident Evil you are roleplaying to be somone who is runing from sombies and solving puzzles.

Some people belive that roleplaying means that there must be and abstract numeric system between them and the game (like "My character is the one who hits not me") but that is just an abstract system that the PnP games used to give the gameplay certain boundaries.

Also there are better systems for certain things. A shooter Setting plays really well in a D10 (Cyberpunk 2020) System. If you wanna roleplay a car game, well a vidogame is the best for you.

Of course, for the Maximun Role Playing experience you need a lot more than tiny bits of roleplaying, so the "MMO" seems like the best choice.

With this point of view, the best roleplaying game i have ever played is Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay. It's just awesome. For the time playing, you are riddick, and in order to succed, you must think like him.

I keep saying this but look up RPG on wikipedia. its definition is no longer literal, its a term to describe a genre. it no longer means it has anything to do with roleplaying.  a game will be a mmorpg if it uses conventions from the rpg genre, it has nothing to do with roleplayers.
