If Darkfall is Vaporware it's in good company.

These games were once vaporware:

"Redemptive software

On occasion, some software titles that were initially classified as "vaporware" redeem themselves after long waiting periods. Games that had an unusually long development period filled with delays and restarts include Half-Life[13], Half-Life 2, Max Payne, and Prey[14], which received chiefly positive reviews.

Another prime example of a redemptive vaporware could be Team Fortress 2 (announced in 1998) which, after a redesign from a more realistic character and level design to a more cartoonish character design reminiscent of Pixar movies, received glowing hands-on previews[15][16][17], and it was finally released on Oct.10, 2007 (playable since Sept.21 as an open beta for people who preordered "The Orange Box" pack)."

So even though Darkfall is vaporware at the moment, just relax and remember that once Half Life 2 was vaporware and so was Max Payne.

But the difference is, most of those games were produced by Valve, a major developer with a long history of success.

Hardly can be compared to Aventurine.

QFT, I disagree with people who says Darkfall is a scam and will never come out. I figure they promised too much, and are too inexperienced to pull it all off. All these "updates" are simply ways for Tasos&Co to buy more time to try to keep people from finding out whats really going on.

Honestly I dont think they they really know what theyre doing, and havent from the get go.

The point is that once a game exceeds normal development times, even a game developed by a big company like Valve, it becomes vaporware.

However, the game can redeem itself, just like Half Life 2 and Max Payne did.

So, Darkfall, even though technically vaporware at the moment, can still redeem itself just like these games did. In otherwords, vaporware isn't so bad sincethere's always the chance for redemption.

Cmon man, at least read the post before you respond. At no point did I say it wasnt real. In fact I said just the opposite, I cited Tasos' and Aventurines lack of experience as a key factor in such a long development.

I simply said theyre trying to buy time to live up to what theyve promised with less than satisfactory "updates".

The DF Fanbois always say "oh well this game was called vaporware and now it's really successful," yeah, and it was made by a well known, well funded, large company. DF is made by Aventurine, the exact opposite.

What other games has Aventurine developed and released?

Ummm, the wikpedia site says approx 21 emplyees?wonder how they got that number? You notice it has always been the 5 guys ,yet they state they grabbed all 5 from RAZORWAX?who grabbed them?it is always the same 5 names forever listed.

Aventurine has NEVER put anything out.I find a game like this "Darkfall" to be a real tough game to take on as a first timer. There has been a few other developers like this in the past, however they admitted they needed to spend time developing there engine AND supporting it ,so they could pay the bills and make a living. They basically stated there game was second fiddle when comes to making a living.I don't get this same feeling from these guys as 7-8 years is FAR too long for a company to just do NOTHING,how on earth could you pay the bills?

I am guessing that Darkfall was RAZORWAX's game?seems that way,if so how capable are the 5 guys they got from the original line up?

I'll tell you this, there is some inkling of a program out there with the name DARKFALL on it,however it is incomplete and very much up in the air.I would suggest that NOBODY gets too much hype out of this game or holds there panties in a knot ,this game will be VERY average when and if it ever comes out.

I was mis informed on this game by the media.I thought they just got some rich greeks to back them up and are now in the works to publish this game. The fact is that they joined up with these greeks years ago, pretty much from the time they inherited the game,so it really is a crap shoot as to weather this game comes out with any kind of professionalism. My belief is they have ONLY spent years trying to get a workable version of the game,i highly doubt they added anything to the orginal program, other than filling in the missing pieces to create a working game. Some people will be VERY dissapointed.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Half Life was Valve's very first game, and it get delayed numerous times. They were all new programmers who had just broken off from Microsoft. Your argument is void.

yeah thats what I was thinking too right after Kyleran's post... truth be told we don't know how darkfall will turn out, big companies can DEFINATELY put out sh!t games, as can small companies.

... and I'm 1000% sure beta is real since the first "leak" that came out said that the game had no bugs, had better than expected graphics, and godaweful UI. NO ONE believed him (me included) for good reason, because he had no proof.... but the update validated ALL his points, so he was actually telling the truth.

of course it could all be tasos messing with our minds, and the illuminati could be in control of the world after Obama's election.

Very true, and I think thats a thing most people have missed. I read that leak as well, and I dug as deep as I could, and I tracked it to the very first forum and its just a guy saying "his friend" was in beta or something. I thought the leak was a fake for sure, but the quotes from Tasos did indeed back them up almost point for point.

Well you guys can flame me and call me a liar but a guildie of mine has been in the Closed beta for awhile now. He says it's coming along amazingly and shared a few things with me. Darkfall is coming and it will be amazing. This coming from gamer that hasn't enjoyed a mmo since Ultima Online.

I approve of your first post in 3 years =)

Yep what the haters fail to realize is that many of the leaks, some of which were on this forum, that they cried fake about were almost exactly what the beta tester quotes explained the game to be.

So sorry guys beta is real...let me know what you come up with at the next troll meeting.

Of course Tasos could have multiple accounts on this forum and have been all the leaks himself, which would explain why they sounded the same as the quotes in the update.  Sad thing is some people actually think that that is an actual possibility lol.

Lol yeah I don't post much. Just lurk lol. I figured I'd speak up on this since I've been tracking this game off and on for 4 years now.

Even if the beta is real, Darkfall is still in the vaporware category, just like Half Life used to be, before it released and turned out to be a good game.

A "real" beta doesn't take a game out of the vaporware category. The only way for Darkfall to get out of the vaporware category is to release a good game, just like Valve did with Half Life.

People calling Darkfall vaporware are no more trolls than the people that called Half Life vaporware were "trolls". Half Life was indeed vaporware at one time, according to the accepted definition of  the term.

There doesn't have to be "another troll meeting". Darkfall just has to release a good game, and until then it's vaporware, just like Half Life was. Nothing much you can do about that.

The only thing I really have a problem with is this "accepted defition of the term" because there really isnt.  You can quote definitions from here or there, but there is just too much vagueness, even in the definitions.

Heck we have some people posting on here saying "all games are vaporware until they are released" which obviously is his opinion, but clearly wouldnt be accepted by everyone else.

I keep going back to the Team Fortress 2 example.  People claimed it was vaporware just because the devs scraped it and werent happy with it.  Which is something we should hope they would do.

People just get pissy and upset, and since vaporware sounds like a cool word, there ya go.  I think the term is ridiculous, and not just because it is attached to DF.  As it was annoying back when I was waiting on TF2 to come out.

An example would be how me, and i know a lot of other people, think vaporware means a game that shows no signs of ever releasing.  Was DF in this category awhile ago?  sure.  With the recent updates and proof in the last few months it definitely is clear that this game is going to release.  I have a non official link im debating on putting up just yet because until tomorrow all it will do is bring on flaming...but it is more proof.

The difference here, is that the TROLLS are the ones who slapped the vaporware label on. There is a difference between people who don't like the game idea, skeptics that it will deliver, fans, fanboys, and TROLLS. The trolls ran around night and day saying they couldn't find Aventurine's office on google maps, the screenshots were doctored, the trailers were Gmod footage, all that good stuff put it in the "vaporware" bin. Anyone sensible enough to take a peak inside would have realized "oh, this isn't vaporware, those guys are just morons" like I did.

Valve was founded in Aug 1996, and released Half-Life in Nov 1998, after being formally put into production sometime in 1997.  (merged the content/resources of two different games)

    planethalflife.gamespy.com/View.php

There is no comparision.  We know thiis about the founders:

August 24, 1996 – Valve is founded as an L.L.C. in Kirkland, WA by former Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, instrumental minds behind nearly three generations of the Windows operating system.

Most of what we know about Tasos and his team is disputable, include several proven untruths as to their backgrounds and programming skills.

Also note this important distinction:  In 1997, shortly after announcing the new project  it was  first shown to the public at the E3 convention. which is a well known gaming venue, as opposed to DF being displayed at obscure gaming conventions in Greece with little fanfare or attendence by the mainstream press.

Aventurine has only itself to blame for all the skepticism and doubt, they could quite easily chose to dispel it all, but for reasons only known to themselves they won't.

Oh well, sooner or later we'll find out what they've been keeping so secret, and the mystery will be over.

Another prime example of a redemptive vaporware could be Team Fortress 2 (announced in 1998) which, after a redesign from a more realistic character and level design to a more cartoonish character design reminiscent of Pixar movies, received glowing hands-on previews[15][16][17], and it was finally released on Oct.10, 2007 (playable since Sept.21 as an open beta for people who preordered "The Orange Box" pack).

Honestly, it seems your definition of vaporware is "If I like a game, it can't be vaporware, and if anyone calls it vaporware, I get to call them a troll". /shrug

I don't think there is any large group of people that use the term vaporware to mean any game that hasn't released yet. Vaporware means any game that hasn't released yet that has gone way beyond the normal development cycle of similar software.

"Proof" of an upcoming release doesn't do anything to change the fact that Darkfall is vaporware. If it releases and is a good game, it will be redemptive vaporware, meaning it was vaporware that did eventually successfully release.

Once the game goes beyond accepted norms of development cycles, it's vaporware. Who calls it vaporware first, or how often, doesn't really make any difference.
