You aren't on any mission to "set the record straight" the fact is that someone doesn't like your game and you can't simply disagree and move on, you feel compelled to prove me wrong. More facts: DDO's content release schedule has DECREASED DRAMATICALLY since release. At one point DDO got 5-10 new quests per month, and now they are getting 5-10 new quests PER YEAR.

Care to give a list of non Turbine MMOs with DX10 support?
Good job you don't resort to name calling, I suppose the irony of this,
"The funny part about all this is that I've made my post about a game online, and you people have made your posts about me."
I played DDO from beta through until about 8 months ago. I came back 2 months ago and played for a month.
I agree with a lot of what the OP said, disagree with a lot.
The game could have been better. Yes, the all instancing thing is retarded.
I will never play the game again as I played it too much. It is easy to trash something you grew tired of, but then you have to be logical and ask why you played it for so long? The OP's credibility (if I am reading this correctly and I did not read every single post here) is he played it a lot. Unfortunately, that is also working against him. If you played it for so long, clearly you liked something about it at the time.
Hindsight is 20/20, but let's face it, something about it caused you to play it so much. I am objective enough to realize that while I do not play it anymore, there was something I really enjoyed about it at one time.
Is it starting to be dated? Yes. But still, Dx10 looks nice and hardly any MMOs offer it. The community can be snooty if you are not in a guild and things will be prohibitively difficult if you remain non-guilded. It's hard getting groups together that are consistent and effective without that structure in place. But that's true for a lot of MMOs.
I have played Warhammer since beta and it's very shallow and boring. It was fun for a month, now it's an effort to log in. I subbed to DDO for about 12 months total off and on over a longer period. Warhammer has been canceled. I continue to look for an MMO that recaptures some of the fun I had in DDO and other games, such as pre-cu SWG.
I no longer play it, and have a lot of complaints, but these complaints stem from playing it so much that the shortcomings became an issue. If you're on the fence, you should definitely try this game. I can understand why people like it and why they don't, the truth is its better than the vast majority of what is on the market today. There's no "press a button and go make coffee" combat, either.
I wish they would combine their DDO ideas with their LOTRO ones. If they could somehow integrate the best of those two into one D and D game, such as DDO's combat in a big open world with less instances, that'd be great.

THIS is a good argument against it. I dissagree with him, however, he wasn't making anything up to make his reasoning look better. He tells he doesn't like the game because forthe instances, for example.
What server were yu on? I PuG and am unguilded on other servers. Some servers are "nicer" than others when it comes to PuGs and unguilded. SO I have to agree with that to that extent. However, my gaming wasn't hampered much with that. I could always find other PuGgers to play with. When you play makes a difference, too.
Consistant groups are difficult to do, hence my PuGging all the time. We have people from Europe, Asia, the Americas as well as the Aussies and Kiwis and Chinese players too. Heck, I live in Hawai'i. If you live somewhere outside the Eastern Time zone, finding a static group is difficult.
Thank you for a rather valid, though I disagree with it, argument. Thank you for your honesty and integerity.
Yes, I am a gamer girl. Dungeons and Dragons Online: April 2006 THELANIS: Guild: Merc's Only. I am neither lying about how much time spent in game (I guarantee it was FAR more than you) nor lying about the game's shortcomings. The funny part about all this is that I've made my post about a game online, and you people have made your posts about me. And you call me the troll. You can't sit there and ask me to come up with more facts than I've already given, they are too numerous. And it is my right (and duty) as a once-faithful player of the game, to inform others that they are better off with something else. I know fanbois will disagree (sorry fangurlz is not a widely accepted term) but that's your job. So... the reality is you just hate the fact that I'm right. Warhammer is a superb game in every way to DDO (and over 100 posts in the thread and its the first time I've advocated playing another game--so don't hate) and quite simply the one with the greater upside potential. DDO fails at any depth. One new playable class and one race (that is visually identical to another race that just has different stats) is hardly groundbreaking. They fail at looking good - sorry but DX10 is nothing new. I had it a year and a half ago installed on my box, what took DDO so long? Please list the games that put out new 10 new quests a month. Really. I want to know.
As for playing, since you got so many facts wrong (which I will not get into here, many people already pointed it out) I do not think you played as long as you said you did.
While the amount of content HAS decreased, HOWEVER, I think you cannot count. I think what 30+ new quests? That isn't counting the revamped stuff. THAT'S THIS YEAR ALONE.
Oh. List the games that have DX10. really. I needthat list, too.
How many games have updated their graphics since start? How many times did they?
Less players? where are these facts? Many MMOs lose about half the players they got at start. DDO wasn't any different. Please, we "fanpeoplez" been looking forthe website that lists the populations of the servers.
One new playable class? How many has WoW added? How about any other MMO has added?
You talk like someone stole your dice as a kid and kicked you in the shins and called you a geek. Half the people I know on my server ALONE have not ever played Pen and Paper.
I'm sure you will disagree with me, but you are looking more and more silly with every post. You will not post facts to back up your claims, you have distorted people's replies to you, calling them fanboiz when some don't even playthegame anymore and defended it. Yup, us fanpeoplez are doing the defending first, I agree, but not giving any facts to back it up, it is very hard to take you as anything but a big green guy.
Break out the acid and Fire weapons, guys.

The rebutals made to the OP's claims are due to his/her consistent inacurracies which read as an intent to decieve. I'm not sure about anyone else, but deception is not an opinion in my book.

Except you are missing one huge thing while trumpeting the new quests. DDO has nothing but quests, if they do not put out new ones they have no game. So while other games may not release 30 new quests this year(DDO needs about 5 to 8 a month not 2 1/2) they are also not all in need of them like DDO is. But if you like running the same quests over and over then DDO is fine if they stop adding things today.
As for less players did you miss the server merge and the calls for it to happen again since then? Players on the Turbine sight want another merge recently, and you have to a paying subscriber to post so that means people paying are tired of small numbers. Of course DDO has shrunk over time, it has a stable core of players but that core is not huge numbers. DDO gets development, but it is the step sister of LOTRO and always will be treated that way.
TO a point, DDO does lack what othere MMOs do have: Time sinks. THis is a well known fact and I for one will not dispute that. When I played WoW, that was a nice feature.
The argument was not the fact that DDO NEEDs new quests, it was the fact thatwe got more questthan Signetring said. It was pointing out errounious facts. YOur argument is far sound, and you are correct.
As for server merges, I was there for them. It was over a year into the game, and the players started to notice that DDO was no long selling on the shelves. Our population dropped when people left and there was very few new players. Everyboduy thought it had died, or didn't even know it exist. This isn't Turbine's fault, butAtari's, which has also been discussed to death on the forums.
As for the rally for another server merge, That happens about every other month on the forums. I play at off peak times, so I see the population at it's lowest. It isn't that bad. What most people don't realise is there are alot of anom players. And now we can make our own chat private channels up so there are larger structures made up of many guilds that pull from those resources before they go to the LFM.
Anyways, even at late nite early am on the East coast, there is genereally a second instance of the Marketplace and occasionaly the harbor. During primetiem, there is almost always 2-3 instances and weekends, I have seen even a 4th. Not WoW numbers mind you, but enough to tell most people that there is a sizable population of people online.
Also, I have to point out that very few ofthe actual DDO population reads the forums. I do not know the actual numbers but it widely accepted that it is about one fifth of thetotal population. ANd only a few of them actually post.

It is actually even less usually 10% is the accepted number of forum users. But that 10% speaks for the whole because on average your most hardcore and or game loving people will get involved in the forums. But no one can actuall prove that number except for the company who owns the game. In this conversation the number is irrelevant because the 90% not on the forums only have themselves to blame for not using a resource at their disposal for information and making their voice heard.
Yes there are always anon players, their number has always been greatly exaggerated by both sides of the population argument. Most people know , as the anon has been a popular source of debate since it was first introduced. DDO has a stable but small fan base and in truth it is a shame because them game could have been a big time hit had the devs done just a few things better.
My hope is there is a DDO2 and Turbine does not get the contract to produce it.
DDOs explorer areas are still small and instanced and really are just an outside quest that once run through offer very little to the game. They started out as a good idea and the revamps of some old ones was needed, but they never really became what I had hoped for when they were announced.

I wouldn't put too much weight on the server merge calls on the forums, tends to happen in all MMOs, even those that publish subscription figures.

Yep it is a small percentage of the actual playerbase, it is generally not representative for the reasons you give, it is heavily skewed towards long term players and those that play a large number of hours. I would say the voice of casual players or roleplayers for instance is almost non-existent, but I meet them in game all the time.
DDO will never have enough content for hardcore players even if they produced 10 quests a month, for a player of that kind that is probably 1 or 2 days content.
I have been saying for ages that they actually need to change tact with explorer areas and fill them with the same low level content you get in most MMOs (timesinks) on top of the quests. If you take an explorer area, stop it being instanced, allow it to respawn, give some noddy reason for people to go back and forward in it you have a MMO zone, and why not, they are easy to produce in volume and people are generally happy with them, and you aren't sucking huge amounts of resources from real quests production which is always going to be slow.

Ths has been the biggest issue with DDO. Not the PvP, or the balance issues, but the lack of timesinks. We thought with crafting announcment last early spring was going to bethe begininning of a decent time sink. But it involves one high level raid. It was a great disapointment for most of us. Not to say the crafting isn't useful, but it isn't CRAFTING.
We have collectibles no one really picks up, starting in the harbor. The stuff you get with it is usually dumb and is sold for gold. People ignored them until they placed them in some of thecrafting reciepes. I was hoping for a bigger use of collectibles-to-crafting such as potion making beyond what was there, differnent receipes would allow you to make different kinds. That way, it was open to the lower levels and people can get onthe crafting bandwagon from the get go.

That being said and we know the content is light for hardcore players who have been there a long time, I would still tell anyone thinking of getting DDO to do so. Right now even a hardcore player will have a years worth of things to do in DDO.
With my recent disappointment in games I am considering a return to DDO. Nothing seems to really grab a hold of me and make me want to play it every night.

I would say it is worth coming back when Mod 9 comes out.. there will be a big flurry of exploration and capped characters back out retirement to work on the new level cap.
If what they are saying about quests in Shavarath, could be a good time.

February/March then?
I assume they will make strenuous efforts to have ti out before the anniversary.
I would be willing (and eager as hell to do so if someone decides to take me up on it) to wager $1,000 in american cash that Turbine will NOT have their module up before the anniversary date. As with everything Turbine, they are:
A) Horrible at any kind of deadline. I am not the type of gamer who feels "privileged" and "blessed" just because they put out new content. Nor do I feel overly compelled to reward them with Dev-worship just for coming up with 8 new dungeons. Turbine owes their playerbase to try to keep some sort of time frame that is reasonable, and several months between any new releases just is not feasible in a game that depends so heavily on such content. The worst part about it is that Turbine does not even feel the slightest sense of urgency to target the anniversary for a release. Just ask what happened to the supposed semi-annual State of Game Address.
Predictable. There will be a "so sorry its late, but it's on the way guys!" announcement several days before the anniversary, announcing that the module 9 will not be ready.
It would be a sucker bet and doubt if anyone would put their money where their mouth is. This I know for sure, Turbine cannot be counted on for anything. It always comes a day late and a dollar short.
On another note, just a list of a few games that have ranked better than DDO on MMORPG.com
Hellgate London (defunct)
Tabula Rasa (defunct)
Lineage 2 (EOL)
Asheron's Call (EOL)
Planetside (EOL)
ROSE Online (never even heard of it)
Puzzle Pirates
Dungeon Runners (NCSoft's Freebie)
So even after the word went out to come hustling to MMORPG and "rate DDO"... the community still couldn't hold a candle to some dead games and a few little-known freebies.
Sorry, as I stated before, DDO has already done all it's ever going to do. Put your money elsewhere, you won't miss a thing.

Ranks on a MMORPG don't really mean anything. Hell ranks in general don't mean jack. How can compile a complex opinion into a number? How does that show if someone will enjoy it or not? It won't, ranking a game on a scale of 1-10 with no reason behind doesn't mean anything and you are a fool if you think it does. The word 'niche' was created for a reason.
DDO is a very fun NICHE game. Its not for your niche, therefore you probably don't like it. It is meant to be instanced, group only, representative of DnD, yadda yadda. The community of DDO is by far the best I have ever seen in any game.
Now, Turbine with updates and all, yea they have been slowing things down ever since the release of LOTRO. But you know what, I really like the game, the customer service in game and out is great, if they are a little late, I am fine. Now I don' t know about you, but I, like many others, do not play DDO for the endgame, nor do I rely on new content to enjoy myself. I am constantly making new characters, new unique builds that are fun to play all through the game. Its something you will never see in the MMOs that are out at least today. What other game can have a Fighter/Sorcerer/Bard all in one? None. What other game can I make a dual-wielding Paladin that can restore a Cleric's mana and disable traps? (pal/clr/rog) None.
The game is not meant for one character to get all the content done and jump and glee. Do I despise the GAME for Turbine's delays? Of course not, that would be ridiculous. I am not a fan of it, but I can't say that I hate it. I just don't mind at all. If it isn't ready, don't release it.
Edit: Also, if you haven't played Permadeath in DDO, you don't know what difficulty in an MMO is.

I want to just touch on these two points.
Yes DDO allows you to make characters no other game can touch, but Turbine has a habit of making game changes to nerf some of the fun multi class builds and that has always irked me.
Permadeath does make the game more difficult, but it is false difficulty because you could do it in any game and the Devs did not build it into the game to make it tough or add challenge the players hold themselves to those rules. It is a cool way to extend the content but it is not like Turbine thought up some great way to make the game challenging, if anything they made the game so easy at time people started Permadeath to combat the boredom of the game in those days.
DDO is the BEST game out there bar none. You are obviously one of those folks who just sit at home and play games all day and zerg your ass to the end of the game and then whine and cry and say "there's no new content, I've done everything, I'm l33t11!!!111, wah wah wah, this game sux." WOW and all its clones are for 3 year olds and takes no skill whatsoever. The other "awesome unknown and defunct games" games you listed are beyond crap. It's funny that DDO & SWG both have tons of folks playing them every day even though everyone always says they're dead, and more new folks join all the time, and I do mean hordes of them. It's funnier still that most of them are coming from WOW lol and can't believe how they've been blindly led to believe that it's the best game out there simply because more people play it. More play it because toddlers in diapers can play it effectively, and all those half-witted people out there who don't really understand what it's like to play a challenging game, just something where they stand still and push buttons and say WOOT I Killed Another One!!! I'm so BAD AZZ!!! which broadens the player base considerably haha.
Hordes of new people join every day? Really? Did you expect this post to be taken seriously or anyone think an adult wrote it?

I haven't seen any hordes, but I can quote one statistic that can be determined by digging around in their forum system - 200,000 accounts have been added to the game, counting trial accounts, since Jan 2007.
Trial accounts were disabled for a couple months this year..
That comes out to man many a day.. and obviously most must not have stayed on as paying subscriptions, since the best guess we've heard about subscriptions numbers is ~25,000.
OMG i just logged on D&D 2 days ago.... BEST GAME EVER.... Of course it has its little issues and all but WHAT GAME DOESNT....... i love the STORY and the QUESTS and the PLAYERS and the CHARACTERS you get too choose from.... almost reminds me of the good old days with D&D with friends at there houses lol.

Where does the 200,000 accounts number come from? Did Turbine put that out? You would think with that many in 2 years they would have kept 10% even and have a population around 45k then.
I think that the 200,000 accounts since Jan. 07 is correct if taken in context. The average plat spammer creates 7 accounts per week to stay ahead of the banning process. If those numbers are taken into account, then the 200,000 new accounts is a very viable number, if not a bit low...
The above is the link to a data base with a compilation of games and their relative populations. DDO's last accurate statement was from Feb. 07 at 45,000. Given the general ebb and flow, I'd say that it would be accurate to say that there are between 25,000 and 40,000 current subscribers worldwide, not including trial accounts.
And here is a series of articles by the professionals talking about the current crop of top tier games and a couple on the horizon...

Did you run out of fingers to count them on?
Care to give a list of non Turbine MMOs with DX10 support?
Good job you don't resort to name calling, I suppose the irony of this,
"The funny part about all this is that I've made my post about a game online, and you people have made your posts about me."
is probably beyond your limited intellect.
Have a winner and don't go on a game over! Does your avatar make you powerful in real life? Check out the Mystical Enders gaming community. www.mysticalenders.com

We also have explorer areas.
