A Letter to the Tabula Rasa Community
Last November we launched what we hoped would be a ground breaking sci-fi MMO. In many ways, we think we've achieved that goal. Tabula Rasa® has some unique features that make it fun and very different from every other MMO out there. Unfortunately, the fact is that the game hasn't performed as expected. The development team has worked hard to improve the game since launch, but the game never achieved the player population we hoped for.
So it is with regret that we must announce that Tabula Rasa will end live service on February 28, 2009.
Before we end the service, we'll make Tabula Rasa servers free to play starting on January 10, 2009.
We can assure you that through the next couple of months we'll be doing some really fun things in Tabula Rasa, and we plan to make staying on a little longer worth your while. For more details about what we are doing for Tabula Rasa players, please click here.
Stay tuned for more information. We thank you for your loyal support of the game and encourage you to take us up on the benefits we're offering Tabula Rasa players.

I called it almost down to the day. It's sad the game could have been a contender but looking at the DVD that came with the CE you knew that the people developing it did not belive in the product, say what you will about games like WAR, LOTRO, and even WoW but you can tell anytime you see a video of the developers they truly belive in what they are doing. I guess we can place Richard Garriott in the Hall of Shame next To David Bowman Ken Troop, and Julio Torres.
RIP Tabula Rasa.
Its a shame, it was a fun game imo.
Much like auto assault, i hate to see games like these get closed down.
wow imagine all the money they wasted, they could have come here and asked what the community wants lol =P *cough UO2*
"Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun."
I didn't Play Tabula Rasa, but I did play auto assault. it was awful.
Well, I guess Richard Garriott is laughing all the way to the bank.
The really kick int he nuts to the community, besides the shutdown announcement, is the fact they are going to continue to collect subs until 10 Jan '09. Freakin turn the sub fees off for your fan base now you fuckers

One thing I will say from my experience playing Tabula Rasa is that the devs seemed a good bunch. This seemed inevitable though.
What about the get to earth theme ? what about me getting to 50 finally? the get to earth stuff is fecking awesome ffs.
Bah really to hate to see this game go it has/had really potential.
sucks for those that liked the game, I didnt get into the game after i beta tested it i thought it had some nice ideas and combat was fairly fun.
I thought the game was a blast to play, but I guess it had a very small population, much like Auto Assault. If it wasn't for my really bad wireless internet(off a water tower, yay!) I would most likely would of been playing it the last 6-8 months. It's a shame NCSoft has had to close two MMO's in the last year and a half.
I can only hope they don't give up so easy on their future products, such as Aion.

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
My only question here is.. Were they not doing 'some really fun things' BEFORE they planned on closing? Why wait and save the best for lights out?
(I didn't play this but I read it was not fun with too many problems, hence the question)
Very strange to put this in there. Probably put something like "the same fun you've come to know and expect in Tabula Rasa will continue until blah blah blah".
"TO MICHAEL!"
i thought the game was a blast in closed beta, then they made all the mobs harder and it just slowed the game down. I would have played it if they didnt change it.

This sucks.
I might as well get on the bandwagon before it's too late.
I have some freinds that still play this game and I can tell they are very upset. The game seemed like one of those "Its going to get better soon!" games. The one you keep holding on to hoping that some miracle will happen and the game will live on through the years as one of the best. Sadly it was a misderected game that tried so hard to compete in a dominated market.

I personally think that this would make a great Free 2 Play game. What do you all think?
Why would they do that? They already produced (WOTLK) what the community wants ... and sold 2.8M copies in a day.
The advancement system is pretty terrible. You don't feel you are progressing much during the course of leveling.
There were battles all over the place, but it was the same battles happening over and over and over again. Thats not much fun IMO.
Thats a shame they are closing down. I think TR is a good game.
RIP
I really hope someone can make a decent Sci-Fi MMO
Good as in "nice people?" Sure. Good as in "competent developers?" Hell no. We're talking about a dev team who piddled away the first five months after launch by dicking with the spy profession and ignoring everything else. And when they finally get around to addressing other professions they screwed up sniper so terribly that their player representative for that profession quit the freakin' game. And they followed that up by nerfing engineer into oblivion, which was already being shared by grenadier and demolitionist.
I can remember the PlanetTR board after the first profession representative (they were called "Alpha Wolves") and how after months and months of just doing whatever the hell they (the devs) wanted, and an insanely high turnover rate in that program, almost all of the "Alpha Wolves" flat out quit until the community became so disinterested that the devs simply shut the entire program down because they couldn't even scrape up volunteers to keep it filled. And we're talking about a game with eight professions. The devs couldn't even find eight people to fill the jobs. Talk about your lolz.
They never delivered on a single promise they made (COCPs, PAUs, Command Opportunities) and the entire game limped along with absolutely no repeatable content whatsoever and, if high level players were lucky, a new one-use instance every four months.
TR had one of the worst dev teams in the history of MMOs. They did nothing right ever. It's why in less than a year they blew through three lead producers.
I didn't follow the game too much, but what was the whole point of talking about the Earth expansion if they were just going to close down the game? Were they trying to get some last minute subs, or see how much interest there would be in an expansion?
It's shocking that Tabula Rasa is closing down but Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is still around.
With SOE supporting Vanguard it shouldn't be a surprise, however Vanguard was a crash and burn game.

Cool your jets mately.
NCSoft made a very nice package for the people currently subscribed. Very, very nice.
First off, it's important to note that all of these goodies are only available to people who were subscribed to Tabula Rasa at the time of this announcement. That's right. There was no warning, or time to prepare. They are rewarding those who have stayed subscribed to the game, rightfully so.
* 3 free months of City of Heroes including digital client.
* 3 free months of Lineage II including digital client
* Aion beta access (coming soon)
* Aion pre-order access (available in 2009)
* 1 free month of Aion including digital client (available in 2009)
Think about all of that for a moment. That's basically three free games, three free months of play in two of the games, beta access to what may be one of the most highly-anticipated MMOs in 2009, one free month of play in that game and special pre-order access to same game. Even though I'm sure most TR lovers would gladly trade in all of that to keep the servers going, NCsoft is being quite generous with their severance package.
So for all of you out there who will be able to enjoy these rewards, you deserve it. We will mourn the loss of Tabula Rasa at the end of February, and you can certainly count on more TR news and coverage from Massively up until the last server is disconnected.
I played TR in Beta and for about a month or so after its' release. IIRC, I made it up to somewhere in the low to mid 30s before I quit.
So, first let me say that I liked the game and am sad to see it go. That said, I'm not terribly surprised that it happened.
All through Beta (at least from the time I entered into it), the Devs were adjusting the classes. Not minor adjustments, but fairly major ones. And then, once it went retail, they adjusted things again between final beta and retail. All these adjustments, changes, re-thinking, etc led to lots of bugs and unintended consequences. Abilities and features that were supposed to be part of the release were absent. Higher level content was sparse. Higher level zones were much like lower level zones, only with different colored and more plentiful MOBs. Instead of feeling more capable as you gained level, you felt less -- I did, anyway.
Quests were broken (not surprising early after release) and, especially in the higher levels, text was grammatically... bad. Really bad. It just seemed sloppy.
So, ultimately, I'd say that while the concept was very good -- I liked the plot quite a bit -- the execution was not there. Their reach exceeded their grasp. The buzz -- much like what happened to Conan -- went negative fast, and as this was not a big name IP, it stood even less of a chance of recovering from its early days than Conan, and I think we all know Conan is a failure that will eventually fold under its poor subscriber base.
I wish TR had waited longer before release. I wish they had a better and more consistant vision of how the classes would work and how effective they should be and that the Devs *stuck* with it. Instead, their changes put them behind the 8-Ball and they never got out from that spot.
So farewell, Tabula Rasa.
R.I.P.
Yeah I just finished a trial last week and I gotta say it was pretty good. I also just won a free copy from massively.com. I was kinda hyped to play this game. Now I hope my copy gets here before they shut it down lol.
TR is just another victim of a really poor launch and another over inflated ego driven "visionary".
Oh well.
Like everyone said this was no surprise really. I posted a topic last week speculating the game would shut down because I was concerned about subbing.
Looks like I missed out on a free copy of Aion and I could have used the 3 free months to CoH.
