Any MMORPGS out there with exploring in it?

Hello.  I'm looking for a mmorpg.  It doesn't matter if it's old or new or in beta.  What I'm looking for is a place I can explore.  I'm tired of having a simple zone map full of X mobs or X quests.  I want interesting environments I can explore on my own time and see different things.  I heard the orginal asheron's call was something like this?  Not necessarily quests that had you explore, just interesting looking areas that were full of non quest related environments.  Any ideas?

Asheron's Call, Everquest, A Tale in the Desert, and Lord of the Rings come to mind.  World of Warcraft and Warhammer's world's aren't big enough and are too linear to make exploration interesting.

I would say Asherons Call, Anarchy Online, Everquest ( not played it but I know the world is HUGE ) and Vanguard.

I could spend entire days in Anarchy Online, before the shadowlands, just flying, running, swimming around finding neat things to see.

Shadowlands is a nice place to explore as well but not nearly as big and not really as cool allthough it has its highlights.

You could probably fit all of wow in one of AO's bigger playfields like Avalon or plains of salt.

Proper exploration in a MMO environment is found in (Project) Entropia Universe. Even though it is "free" to play - you WILL need cash to actually get anywhere. Bit of a disguised casino environment.

well... darkfall is in closed beta stage, but due to release in '08.

It's map is s'pposed to be the largest ever in an MMORPG and there'll be alot of exploring possible due to dynamic Mob AI (for example... you can go into a cave with nothing in it and the next day a bunch of goblins move inside the cave and build up their numbers in the following weeks). You can also create your own house or own city (city only with your clan together) and since the game is pretty player-driven and revolves around clan-warfare, etc, you won't find alot of generic quests either.

agree there. Will say that AC and EQ have both dated so bear that in mind if you decide to go for one. (AC probably has dated more than EQ incidentally but both are very dated by today's standards)

No doubt about it Entropia, is the absolute best designed landscape for exploration. It is however true, to get anywhere with your character, you will have to spend money... a bit like WoW isnt it, just in Entropia, you pay the amount you can afford this month.
