I'm torn between which one to play.
I like WoW, but I really dread more of the "kill 10 rats" reskinned as "kill 10 scourge" quests. So I would appreciate some pros and cons of both. Please be objective. I love to RP and I like a good smathering of PvE and PvP. I love to explore as well.
Could some of you kind gentlefolk *cough* care to persuade me one way or the other?

WOTLF really take questing to another level. (Plus LOTR has kill x mob quests too). For example, lots of quest has little scripted events to spice up the fun factor. And now there are "vehicle" based quests. The most fun one i had is one you have to ride and control a GIANT ... that was a great great gaming moment.
I also like all the new class abilities. Frostfire bolt is SERIOUSLY cool with huge crits and kill stuff before they get to u. It is pure pure fun hack-n-slash.
It depends on what experience you want.
WoW is a ratrace keeping up with the Joneses game. Race to cap so as not to get left out of progression guilds. Race with progression raiding 3-5 days a week so as to keep up. Attune, gear, next tier to do again. That is WoW. I'm not saying it isn't fun, but you need to be dedicated to even scratch the surface of the meaningful content.
LOTRO is casual. Everyone advances slowly more or less. Endgame is not the priority, the leveling is the main journey experience. The game is also about living Middle Earth, with a house and crafts and such.
Two different games, depends on what you like. WoW is more dog eat dog competition. Lotro is more storyline based group PvE.
the pve is similar. both are very good.
if you are a fan of tolkien's middle earth and role-playing, lotro. the community is superior as well. i know there are great folks in wow, but there is so much that is not great.
but, if you want to pvp like in wow, meaning hop into a battleground queue for some quick action, then that doesn't exist in lotro, unless it happened in the expansion and i missed it. i've only spent a little time in the ettenmoors pvp area; i found it too large an area for me to grasp.
i play lotro because i love the setting and i feel less pressure to lvl than i did in wow. i play, i chat, i go to the inn and listen to other people playing music and talking. i go make myself a cup of tea in real life and come back to the game and put on my funny green hat so people can make some jokes. it's a game on sideline of life; for a while, wow took over my life. it was a lot of fun, but, well, it's not good for me to be addicted to a game.
but i do miss the wow-type pvp.
O no I hate BGs...I would much rather PvP in the open world. I guess that sort of goes with my love of exploration.

It's just really strange...
I want to break my WoW addiction, but I'm too afraid that LotRO won't offer as much as WoW does. I love how in WoW you have so much to choose from. So what exactly IS there to do in the endgame of LotRO?

Does LOtR have pvp ?
I'd have to agree that Lotro is more about the journey while WoW is more about the endgame. Wow has more things to do once you reach the end-game and the PvP in Wow has much more variety. I'm currently playing both games, and I'm finding leveling-up to be more fun and less of a grind in Lotro. This is probably because the quests in Lotro are more story-driven.
I also feel less pressure to reach the end-game in Lotro, and to get the next shiny epic. I think this is because end-game characters don't look all that different from mid-level characters.
To answer your question, if end-game content and being "uber" is important to you, then WoW is probably the better choice. If you want a good storyline and enjoy leveling-up, then Lotro might suit you better.
Lotro does have PvP, but it's not as varied as WoW pvp. There are far more things to do in WoW pvp.
I don't care about having uber endgame. I'd just like to know what to expect once leveling is complete.

If you love exploration, then Lotro is a great choice. The maps are enormous, you can run around for hours and still not see everything. Also, there are a lot of achievements in Lotro based around exploration (like finding all the ruins in a zone). And to top it all off, Lotro has some of the best looking scenery in any MMO.
Well I plan on playing both, wow for a month then get moria and play it for a month. Normally work my way around to 3 -4 games. WOW,DDO,LoTR and Vanguard. Like to keep it mixed up a bit to keep from getting bored.
Ultimately its a simple decision. If you need a game to make you feel important and have value than WoW is the option. If you want an extremely entertaining game that does not take over your life LOTRO is the answer.
To compete in WOW you have to spend a whole lot more time than you do in LOTRO. Yet both games are just as challenging and have just as much variety. Just that in LOTRO the variety comes with more than your next +1 sword of no life.
The community is much more helpful and mature in LOTRO. Far less, I am more special than you are because I have a +2 sword of no life and your sword is only +1, LOSER!
LOTRO is definitely for a more mature gamer.
Oh if it was only that simple.
LOTRO has better crafting. LOTRO has a tighter story. LOTRO has a better community. LOTRO has awesome developers.
LOTRO is also boring. Sorry, it just is.

so is WoW so i guess its a tie in that regard.
Lotro endgame is a bit of an unknown right now due to the release of Mines of Moria. Supposedly the raid content consists of 6 6-man instances which lead to a 12-man raid which is apparently very difficult. Lotro has 2 things going for it that make me optimistic about the endgame:
1) Regular content updates (every 3 months) that introduce new endgame content. The developers are getting really good at creating more interesting, more challenging instances. They have stated they are working on a raid or two for the next update. Makes sense since the Rift, the old 12-man instance from Shadows of Angmar was so popular.
2) Legendary items so far are an epic win, I can imagine them taking a lot of your attention at the endgame. I don't see anyone being truly satisfied with a weapon as there is always the possibility of something better.

Try it, only way you will know if you like it or not. Personally I prefer it to WoW, though it doesn't satisfy my PvP thirst, not that WoW did either.
End game has raids, group instances and monster play, though it is not as punishing as WoW's and as it is only 18 months old there is naturally less content in it.
Cool!
Thanks for all the replies.

The only thing you can do is to try th trial. Some love LotrO and some hate it so its all about what you are looking for. It cant really compte with WoW when it comes to end-game raiding and pvp but offer alot that WoW doesnt have.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
I'm not a hardcore raider though. I perfer the smaller instances and a big one every once in a while.

Neither.
They both have an abundance of "kill X rats" or "capture Y crates". This is essentially the essence of all MMOs. Jack, are you SURE you want to stick with MMOs and not try some single RPGs like Fallout for a change? I played both/play LOTRO now and I can say, they BOTH have plenty of what you just mentioned you are tired of.
It sounds like you're burned out, which happens to all of us. Maybe a month or two on a RPG will get your juices flowing again, especially if you're asking people to poke or prod you one way or the other.
Or maybe Pvp? There is none of that in that at all.. CoD4, Guild Wars. (I can't recommend WAR cause they have "kill X 10 times" too).
I'd say neither... go light a fire and curl up with a good RPG.
"TO MICHAEL!"
True, the quests in Fallout 3 are more involved - but it just doesn't draw me in the same way LOTRO does. I don't feel as connected to my character in Fallout 3. And I don't get that same feeling of achievement when I level up. There's something about MMO's that single-player games can never capture - at least until they make NPC's that are more alive - but that won't happen for a long long time, given the current state of artificial intelligence.
I think lotro is definatly the game for you by the sounds of it.
Leveling from 1 to 50 is better having probally the best story line out there and a great community
Once you reach 50 lotro pvp starts to pick up and if you like pvp you could spend your entire time there and be happy IMO or its simple enough just to log on with your kinship and knock a few orcs (or hobits) down.
Raids also start appearing there are plenty of 6 man instances with a few larger raids as well.
and not to mention every 3 months update including more pvp options more story more area and more crafting and more more more
A good tip find a good kinship there are plenty right here on mmorpg.com depending on your play style but I really think you would enjoy lotro
Neither
Wait for a good mmo to come out :P
LOTRO.

Go to Landroval server, in LotRO, as its the unofficial RP server. Drop by the inn in Bree, you know, that one called the Prancing Pony. It's the RP hub, mostly. Also, there are a lot of guilds on Landroval that are RP to some extent. The game even allows you to flag your toon as RP, so your title shows in white, letting others know. The music system really adds to it, allowing concerts, wandering minstrels, etc. It's not uncommon to find someone playing tunes in the auction halls, just to entertain everyone.
The PvE is great, although as others mentioned, you can't really get too far away from the "kill X mobs" kind of quests. The PvP is called Monster play, and it's not across the whole world. The exploration is also amazing - it's Middle Earth you're exploring: Barrows Downs, Old Forest, etc. If you've read the books, having the chance to wander the same areas is great, and a lot of them are quite immersive in feeling (the Old Forest does feel dark, claustrophobic and dangerous).
Good luck on your choice, but I think there's only 1 clear choice based on your stated likes.
Regards.
