My wife and I are intersted in LOTRO. We've gotten a hold of some LOTRO 10-day buddy access keys and plan to start playing as soon as we can figure out what classes to play. The last game we really played together was WoW and we both played the role of tank. After reading a little bit on some class review articles on various sites it would appear that having two tanks would be a gross waste of potential. So we are curious, what would a good class combo be for two inseparable players? We're not familiar with the fellowship system or even with the classes much. We're very open to any play style. Any info would be most appreciated.

well i hope i can help you. i was thinking about returning to lotro, i only got lvl 30 and am fearing no1 will be my lvl to help me to chapters
but anyway i would suggest mabye a captain and a minstrel. captains can kinda tank and have great buffs. the minstrel is a healer with aewsome buffs 2. just my opinion althow my lvl 30 captain was kinda boring they are great with groups.

I just don't really know how important fellowships are. We prefer to solo more than group. If we wanted to worry about fellowship maneuvers then we might go with a Burglar and Captain. If we wanted to address long term solo survival then we might go with something like a Guardian and a Champion or a Guardian and a Minstrel. It is just really hard to say. All I know is that we don't have the free time right now to try our hands at every classes, and if necessary class combination, to find our sweet spot. Any insight is most appreciated
Best combo for attempting to do all of the group quests while inviting other classes for a PUG would be Guardian and Minstrel. These are always the two missing classes. Just add some DPS and you're good to go.
If you two don't care about the group quests and just want to play together without grouping with anyone else then any of the classes except Lore Master would go well together. Lore Masters are just too group oriented.
My personal recommendation would be go with the Minstrel and Guardian and group with other people for big quests. They are the most fun.
Good luck!
Edit: I just read your 2nd post. Fellowship Manuvers really aren't a big deal until you start raiding at end game.

Hunter & Lore Master (range)
---------------------------------------
Hunter: high DPS, run speed buffs (there is a lot of traveling and you get a mount access at lvl 35), some crowd control (CC).
Lore Master: crowd control, and moderate healing, pet (LMs are awesome for solo and PvMP raids)
Hunter & Burglar (range & melee)
---------------------------------------------
Hunter: same as above
Burlar: good CC, lots of choices in combat (one of the more interesting classes to play)
Burglar & Lore Master (melee & range)
-----------------------------------------------------
Burglar: same as above.
Lore Master: same as above.
Rune-Keeper & Lore Master (range)
------------------------------------------------
Run-keeper: high DPS, also can heal, some CC
Lore Master: same as above
2 Burglars (melee)
--------------------------
CC control and high damage with attacks from behind. (great at all levels)
2 Lore Masters (crowd control)
------------------------------------------
Excellent crowd control.
2 Rune-Keepers (range)
---------------------------------
High damage, healing, and some CC, at low levels, this combo is exceptional.
Guardian,Captain,Champion, Warden+Minstrel
----------------------------------------------------
Very traditional tank+healer combo
I personally prefer the Burglar as you can play solo, and is excellent to any combo as it handles Crowd Control responsibilities. Also, Burglars have a very broad skill tree to mix and match as the situation warrants. It's probably one of the least same key repetative classes to play.
With 2 players you can incorporate Fellowship manuevers, and the Burglar is the class of choice. You will have simple combos, but they are still useful when you need a heal or power, or that extra damage.
If you choose to do a Burglar, select the Man race, the Hobbit race traits are a waste.
My Personal opinion is that if you have good Crowd Control and high DPS, you don't need the traditional Tank role.
With 2 players, I would avoid the Guardian/Minstrel combo. You will not die, but you will take a lot longer to kill anything.
Personally I would choose a combination of 2 melee classes, with at least one of them being captain or burglar, for healing/buff and healing/CC/debuff abilities. Reason for 2 melees is you can stick close together and don't have to worry about a ranged person pulling agro from the melee.
It must be great to have a missus who actually wants to play with you, rather than tear strips off your ass for the amount of time you spend in game......
my wife and I have duo'ed a champion and minstrel to lvl 46. It works out pretty well, there haven't been too many quests that we couldn't handle on our own and when the going gets tough we either look for a pug or just skip it and come back at a higher level.
"For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, 'If I live, I will kill you. If I die, You are forgiven.' Such is the rule of honour..."
My wife plays a Hunter, and I play a Minstrel. We can complete most quests together, and it is very easy for us to find others to join us in need be. Also though it helps we are in a huge Kin, and are always asked to join with them in the larger Raids and such
LotRO: Meneldor: Riders of the Riddermark
Hunter and burglar. Hunter for all the swift travel, and burglar for the fellowship maneuvers. Its a great combo.

Well, all I can say is don't play a minstrel and captain combo. This is what my wife and I leveled to 50. It's doable, but painfully slow killing stuff sometimes.
My friend just started playing so I'm helping him out. We're doing a runekeeper and a champion. We can kill stuff very fast, and in a pinch he can tank 3-4 mobs (sometimes 5) while I attune to healing instead of DPS.
stay away from minstrels at the moment. No opinion on RK's. Burgler and Guardian is good if you liek the playstyles. What I would do though is pick a couple of DPS classes. Warden seems pretty good from what I have seen which is just to lvl 10, hunters and champs rule as do captains. LM's are good after 30 but getting them there is a pain.

I have seen many of you suggest Hunter. One thing I am worrying about is aggro. I swear I read somewhere, cannot recall where for the life of me, that once aggro is drawn from an enemy/mob that it is very difficult for another player to take the focus of said enemy/mob. I imagine it isn't that big of a deal in the lower levels but farther in the game where mobs and single enemies are more common place, I imagine that a hunter drawing aggro that cannot be transfered could prove very problematic for staying alive. Is aggro really "set in stone" once drawn? Any info would be most appreciated.
Aggro can be an issue for hunters, but a guardian or a champ should be able to get it back. Also, have the non-hunter do the pull.
Aggro is not 'set in stone' once drawn. If you are almost dead, run around for a while, while others attack and draw the aggro off of you
My husband and I, play LOTRO as a couple and we've found a few effective combinations, many of them listed above. The one combination that I don't see is a Captain/Loremaster combo. The nice thing about this combo is both classes have the ability to heal and rez. Have pets for extra damage/buffs. We can usually handle most fellowship quests between the two of us.
The Captains primary job in this combination is to obviously tank, since the class at this time has only one AoE heal after an enemy is defeated and one ally heal. The only self-heal a captain has is a pet skill. The captain also carries several buffs, plus a skill to take all damage on themselves at higher levels.
The Loremasters job in this combination is to provide crowd control to any adds that are pulled, heal the captain (LM's have a really nice self heal to if they take too much damage), and provide alot of damage. Another great skill the Loremaster has is the ability to share power with another player. This is useful for the long drawn out battles as they can share the power with captain and then draw more power from the MOB.
Give a try and see how you like it.
good post and I second the LM . Lm's are virtual killing machines solo also once they get the Lynx pet. lvl 30 if I remember correctly.
I miss DAoC
The Lore Master & Captain combo is a very strong one. Played with a friend with this combo, you can handle almost everything the game throws at you. Duoing Fornost is something all players should try and experience - shitloads of fun!
Guardian and Minstrel are a great combo, equally fun is a Champion/Captain combo. I play these with my friend all the time and there are few quests where we have needed extra help. There is really not much that these two sets cannot do. I think they are the best.
I would say minstrel and warden would be great or warden/captain or warden/runekeeper.Warden can tank and one of you can be the healer/buffs/dps.Wardens can also give run speed buffs and fast travel.
A freind and I have been playing Hunter/Captain duo since launch and have always had good time. I think the Hunter/Captain combo is one of the best.
Anyways welcome to the game and hope you enjoy Lotro ! its a wonderful game
Anything with a Burglar is great!
Burglar / Warden IMO would be one of the strongest DUO's right now - not huge DPS - but surviveability is very high
Burg / Champ would be a little more buzzsaw, but the Champ isn't quite as versatile as the Warden...
In any case - 2 of almost any class can accomplish almost anything the game can throw at them, it just may take a while with low DPS classes.... Good luck and let us know what you choose!
One of my favorite things about LOTRO is that the class combinations are less cookie-cutter than in other games, that is, almost all combinations can be strong. You can even run 6-man instances without a dedicated tanking or healing class. As you can see from the responses, there are a lot of duo combinations that work well. The key thing is to find a class that is just fun to play for you. When you do that, everything else falls into place.
I never got around to playing LOTRO as a family sickness monopolized my time and attention. I'm back and ready to play. Going over this thread I'm very drawn to the LoreMaster and Burgler combo. I don't know much about the LM, currently downloading the high-res client, but "virtual-killing machine" really caught my fancy. Is the LM ranged or melee or both? Also would the Warden be a better fix than the Burgler? Can the Warden, LM, or Burgler ressurect and/or heal?
I think that a LM and a Burglar would be somewhat redundant, as they're both CC/debuff type classes. A LM has more than enough crowd-control abilities to go around, a Warden or Captain would probably be more useful as a duo partner.
Also LMs are pathetic at dealing damage before 30, so don't get too caught up on the "virtual-killing machine" comment.
Playing - FFXIV, ESO
Played - FFXI, WoW, Lineage 2, Guild Wars, Aion, SWToR, LotRO, GW2, TERA, Rift, ArcheAge, TSW
After 30 though are they the top killing machine? Generally what I'm looking for is the greatest killing machine capabilities without the constant aid of a healer. Also, my wife is somewhat bad at micromanagement. What would be poor choices for somebody that had trouble in that area?
How about a Guardian/Champion combo? I went to lotro.com and looked at the class bio's but still don't feel like I have a good idea of what a solid, yet fun, combo would be. In the past we've usually both played tank roles but LOTRO seems to be a little more diverse in the class department...
Not to mention that I am not sure that I want to play a standard tank anymore. I don't know if I could avoid melee enough to be something like a Hunter but I really don't want to start another MMO just to do the same old "draw the aggro, everybody else have fun" role.
