Picking a Class.

WaitsWaits Member UncommonPosts: 30

Picking the right class is always a pain for me. Need something that is good for grouping, solid in solo play, effective and fun in pvp, efficient when farming (needs to be done from time to time) and can perform well at the end game while raiding.

Seems to me each class in LOTRO fits this theme...which one exemplifies the above traits?

In short...which class can do it all?

Hunter, great solo class. Can travel fast between location and bring fellowship members with him. Great DPS and traps for fellowship play. Fast killer when farming animals or NPC's Can track foes, creatures and the deads. And its a fairly easy class to learn.

If you have experience with the game mechanics of LOTRO. I would suggest rolling a warden or a runekeeper.

Man, you want it all huh?

It sounds like for ALL that, you want a hunter. There are other capable classes, but none that do everything you just mentioned as well as the hunter does them all. (Minstrel, Champ great in fellowplay, slow solo) I play a RK but the only reason I'd say hunter for you, is hunter wears Medium armor and RK is only up to Light armor so that gives you an edge on soloing, although the RK can solo as well.

Hunter also has speed buff, so youll get to your mount level MUCH faster. RK is slowwwwwwwwww.

I have the same problem with a new MMO. I started last week afterthe xpac launch and had a few false starts. I first tried a hunter as my first class in a game has always been a archer type class but I felt a bit squishy as they start with only light armor. I briefly tried a minstrel as self heals are always useful but the as they play a lute for their helas and buffs I just found it anoying so I gave up. Lastly I tried a Warden and have to admit I think I found my class. I feel pretty solid and can take on 2 or 3 mobs at once. There's a self heal Gambit (maybe a couple but I'm still low level) that you pop if you need it and the medium armor and shield protect you pretty well.

All I can suggest is try a couple and see what you enjoy. What sounds good on paper may not necessarily be good when you actually play it.

I remember having the same problem in beta. First I tried a LM and hated it, then tried a burgler with the same result, guradian turned me off by level 10 but  then I did a hunter and loved it most of the way through beta but found I like a minstrel better towards the end. Now I have a lvl 50 minnie,  a lvl 51 LM , a 25 hunter, a 15 burg, a 5 guardian, a lvl 10 warden and a lvl 1 Rune Keeper LOL.

As has been suggested try different ones to lvl 10, if you don't enjoy it by ten try a different one. Sooner or later one will jump out at ya.

    I miss DAoC

I had the same but sort of opposite experience in Beta.

I was always going to play a champion. Did so in Closed beta, then open. However, it was too much of a pain in the neck and I had a little bit too much downtime. So I tried Hunter but forcing myself to face the opponent because otherwise I'd be shooting at it sideways was very annoying. I still want to see if I can take a hunter to some higher lvls but in the end it was the Guardian that was my class.

Not so much because I want to be a tank but because soloing was much easier and I found it fun to take on several enemies at once.

In the end, picking a class is like cutting a diamond. You are given your diamond but it's up to you to find which cuts will bring out the brilliance (if you follow my meaning).

I never think picking a class would be a problem in lotro because it is  impossible to play only one class everyday, every month. Leveling in lotro is piece of cake.

If it is a problem, it would be FFXI, because it cost 1 EURO for each additional character created and 1 EURO upkeep for each month. The game provides only one character in monthly subscription fee.

In FFXI don't you have the choice of many jobs?

I get your point but with work and a social life I only have the time to get hooked on character hence the need to be so selective when picking a class.

In that case, I suggest Healer - minstrel is very good in solo. Actually, it is even more powerful than any other class. Most durable one is guardian, minstrel, champion, burgler, mage.

The Hunter is mean, different from WOW. The hunter in WOW is overpowered against rogue as well as their pet is really annoyed.

Killing speed is champion or minstrel, ok hunter as well.
