Well, I was one of the lucky few who got to beta-test SWG, and I was one of many who left after the NGE. I recently logged back into SWG due to the other crappage thats out there for MMO's (won't name them all). I am a 5 year vet of SWG and here is my take on my new experience.
I was originally on Wanderhome, So when I logged in and ran around for a few hours I realized I was almost alone on the server. I then thought well are all the servers the same? and after a bit of research, transfered my toons to Bria. Once on Bria I felt like WOW there are tons of people here, I then set-out to check out my new home and for a moment It felt like the old days. So I stuck around and checked things out and kinda got back into the game, fortunatly on the second day returning to the game the Hoth update was implimented within minutes of logging in I had a group (in which I was invited too) to run the Hoth Instance, It was a blast. Don't get me wrong I miss the Pre-CU days but from my observations in the last few days SWG actually offers alot of stuff from items, to space and ground combat, collections and other stuff. I'm not really fond of the card game at all. I hate the fact you have to play a retarded card game to get certain items in game, but I found away around that with the trading system in the card game to aquire those items. Anyway I am enjoying my time back and I hope it can continue to get better.

That's cool man.. Thanks for posting your experience.
cool. Welcome back to the game. I'm glad you found it engaging again. There is TONS of stuff to do...pve, pvp, collections, space, crafting, badge collecting, decorating, RP, etc. and if you're into it: Cards. I'm like you ... the TCG isnt for me at all.
I'm glad you transferred to a populated server, that seems to be the biggest hurdle for returning vets - they log on to an empty server

Just curious, didn't it cost you 50 dollars per a character to transfer? I find this fee to be utterly outrageous and unprecedented in the industry. I am one of those who bailed out when the NGE hit. I went back 2 1/2 years ago and played for a few months. It was OK but not as good, there were still a lot of people around. During free time, a vet return even thing, I could not find *one* person on Valcyn. I would probably even sub for one month just for the heck of it if I wasn't on a dead server but there is no way in the world I would pay 100 dollars to transfer 2 characters. That is so outrageous to me.
I've heard whisper of a one time free server migration option, please let me know if there is any way to do this without forking out 100 dollars. I would definitely drop in if it didn't cost so much to do so. If you are currently playing, you are welcome to send me a private message here as well w/ any info.

in early 2009, SOE is going to offer free character transfers from low population servers to higher population servers. No one really knows how its going to work but the guess is that they will have a specific list of servers to which people can transfer. If I was in your situation, I would come back and scout some servers to see where you would like to play.

Thanks for the information. If they let us go to Bloodfin from Valcyn, I'd possibly do that. I like a lot of the instances, PvE, crafting, etc. but am also a big PvP person. I had a good time in Bloodfin about 3-4 months ago. I did not want to pay to transfer and leveled up a medic. I think I got to about 40th level before I realize the lower to mid content was far too familiar for me to enjoy any longer.
I will probably take your advice and scout out some more before I do the move. I would be more than willing to pay for a month or two if I knew I wouldn't be the only person on my server! I'll keep an eye on SWG in early 2009. While I am like a lot of people who think the pre-cu experience was superior, and SOE was cheeseball in their handling of the game, I feel there are still things in this game worth enjoying. That's just me, tho.

you know, i havent done it yet but they came out with the Meatlump themepark for mid level characters. you should give that a try. Plus many of the collections, however boring, grant a decent amount of XP.

Typically these posters tend to change their mind after a month of playing the game when the real status of the game sets in.
I'm glad at least some enjoy playing the game but I can't imagine actually paying to play SWG... It should be free to play.
Tecmo Bowl.
Fu*k me then, couse im still here after 2 month, and i love it. and fu*c me sideways, does it feel good to NOT play a fantasy mmog wow clone? Fu*k yeah it does!
Do i fint many people online? Sure as hell!
Do i fint the game empty, the SWG forums Empty? Fu*k no i dont.
Am i FU*king tired of the igonarent and bitter SWG haters out there that think that they know what the status of the game is?
Bloody fu*king hell iam!
Will SWG still be around when Crap of the old Republic comse out? Hell yeah it will.
Before any vet comes in and UUUUUUh you have only been around for 2 month you know nothing...uuuuh. I have been around for over 2 years, but compared to the regular wow clone, SWG actually has a learning curve.
Ihave been to lazy too try and learn everything there is, but this time i took the time. And damn it is worth it.
interesting way to put it
But yeah, so often when vets come back, they are looking at the game through biased eyes and don't always take the time to do the necessary things to make it work better. The best example is the crap targeting system that debuted with the NGE. It was TERRIBLE! But they learned the lesson and put in the option to turn that crap system off...
Population on some servers is abysmal, true. But not on all of them - I'm always amazed that all the vets here happen to come from low pop servers so when they DO go try to go back, all the have to report is that they could find NO OTHER PLAYERS
If people would just come back and play the game as a new game, rather than comparing it to what they knew over three years ago, they would have a mch better experience

I'm guessing they aren't paying their marketers as much any more
Before you keep calling us "igonarent" why don't you bother to learn how it is actually spelled? Carrying emotion and backing it with insults that are spelled improperly just makes you look "ignorant"...
Peace-

Sorry, but to me it isn't even all about the game and it's features, no matter how bad and buggy it still is. It's about principle, and I REFUSE to give money to a company that cares as little about their customers as SOE does.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
Ah back from what we call "Julbord" here in Sweden(Just a christmasfood buffè)
And no, i cant spell even though the spelling of "ignorant" was a misstype. My native language is not English.
And yes iam blind, there is absolutley no one around on the servers, ihave been playing for my self the last 2 month...i just pay a little extra for my account so SOE dont crash and burn.
And yeah, idont have any fun at all ingame. Sorry i was wrong im just login for the sake of it.
Yeah, im one of the WoW kiddys that NGE was maked for, but its funny couse i hate WoW. Well i guess you guys are right.
Yeah, i better stop play the game I like to play couse you guys says so.

SWG is about as dead as an MMORPG gets whilst it still has servers running, this is an undeniable fact. It has a subscriber base of about 7k according to haters, 25k according to rabid fanbois. Even taking the middle ground you're looking at about 17k, if it weren't for station life support and Smedley's refusal to accept he screwed up it would be gone.
There's good reason this game has such a small Dev team, small playerbase and the most notorious reputation in the industry. All three are well deserved, if you actually like the game then you're in the minority.
No one is saying you don't enjoy SWG, they're just pointing out why it is despised by nearly all gamers and all the MMO industry. The NGE is like new coke, but imagine coca cola refused to accept they were wrong and took all coke off the market and left new coke saying "We made chages at our factories and burnt the old recipie so there's no going back, now shut up drink and smile!".

I dont care what you and youre fellow haters thinks, and i certainly dont care about what Oscar Wilde thinks about sarcasm!
Trust me, when and if SWG dies my life will go on as normal. And so should youre life have done, but you choosed to be bitter about something that happened years ago.

why is it always after 3 years?
Because SOE's shills still want people to think the NGE improved rather than destroyed the game.
Here is the "Forumula" all such posts end up following:
I "returned" from 3 years ago. Yeah, the game sucked then, I actually had to go work for Jedi instead of CLICK, RESPEC!! LIGHTSABER!
Now I have to go work to grind loot, scavenger hunts, and the same 6 instances over and over again. I'm having a blast with the other 6 people on my server who all wear the same looted Jedi robes that are better than the Elder ones, neener neener.
I love this combat system which involves me clicking the same button over and over again instead of having to think about strategy and what my opponent was templated with, since everyone now more or less have variations of the same skills.
I love this game and those who think that the NGE was a mistake are stupid, are trolls, and should just "get over it".
PS: Why does my "Jedi Master" die all the time to bugs, frogs, and, uh, stormtroopers?
QFT. I came back to SWG because I have really struggled with burn out on WoW and am not impressed at all with the new MMO's that have recently launched. I am a day 1 vet and I absolutely fell in love with this game. All of the launch bugs, problems, broken crap, but there was just something about the community and the game that I will probably always yearn for. However, after I returned I found that the population on my old server (Kauri) was actually pretty decent and some of my old mates were there. I started a crafter again and began working rebuilding my characters. Here's what happened to me though:
The only reason I came back to SWG was burn out on other games and that little nagging feeling in my gut that I was missing the community in SWG. After playing the game for several months the burn out on my other game wore off, the blinders came off my eyes, and I realized that this game is nothing but a burnt out husk of a game for me. It may satisfy other's desire for their MMO pleasure and I'm happy for those players. I immediately cancelled again and will not come back. For me, this game is just terrible and I needed a good hard slap in the face to remind me of that. My return was that reminder.
To the person who stated that SWG will survive through the new SWG mmo. You are sadly mistaken in my opinion. How many people in SWG do you think are not going to try that game? Now, if the game is an upgrade to SWG (obviously no way of knowing right now) then I can't imagine anyone continuing to play SWG. What would be the point? I'm obviously putting a lot of "ifs" in here and I may be completely wrong but it is my opinion that this game finally dies when the Old Republic launches.
One of the things (perhaps the only thing) keeping SWG alive is that it's the only Star Wars MMO on the market.
When TOR comes online, that will change. Even if TOR is nothing like the original SWG (and that's highly likely) SWG will have problems competing with a new product with updated graphics, developed by guys (BioWare) with an excellent track record with SW themed products, and an excellent track record, period.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Well I dunno about that but yes I have come in here and seen 10 different threads that all contained 'after 3 years' some where in the title.
I quit due to the NGE... but I had quit over the CU as well. I came back after the CU and actually leared to like that.. or at least deal with it.
So I've returned a few times after the NGE as well. So for me it is odd that so many people never tried the game again and its always the magic "3 years".
Heck most of the people who post totally negative things here and on a few other forums that popped up over the years have tried to play the game again (which only pissed them off more) but they did try it again..
I'll just respond to two things I saw in this thread.
1) Try it as a new game
Answer: I have done that.. I wouldn't have bought this "new game" so perspective of comparing it to the "old game" isn't the problem.
Longer Answer: I loved Ultima Online and SWG Pre-CU was much like that. I do not like level games with no real player economy and crapstacular crafting. So Star Wars NGE to me is just like every other crap game that follows this broken design idea that I call the "eq clone" (yes sorry wow it an eq clone as well so I don't tend to mention it unless in response to something).
2) These vets always try under populated severs.
Answer: For the longest time everyone was telling me that Starsider was one of the most populated servers. I had always played Starsider and oddly everytime I logged in it was dead... 20 or 30 or even 50 people around is NOT "alive". There was more than that in "Doc Buff Line 1" when I played the day before the CU went live and there was 5 docs buffing (yes so 5 lines.. more or less the population of 10 current servers waiting for buffs...) and that doesn't count the people milling around the city.. the people in the cantina or the fact that every other city had the same thing going on...
If you enjoy the current game then good.. why would I not want you to enjoy a game?
I personally don't enjoy this game but I don't enjoy many of them. If I post that I don't like a game, I'm not trying to convince anyone to hate it or that it sucks for anyone else. I am posting an opinion from my perspective.
Many of the people in these threads are just as bad as the SOE haters they keep complaining about.
I personaly think that if there never was SWG and if the game was launched today without anything releated to Star Wars this game would do better than most MMO's out there.
But you can't go back in time.
