My son is three and he's gotten into Harry Potter big time and he loves the movies...he'll watch them over and over and over...
Also, he loves the website (harrypotter.com) and I was browsing the site with him, and something structt me curious...
There's alittle flash area in the site where u can enroll into hogwarts and the hat asks you a series of questions to see which house you would be suited in. My wife was RavenClaw and I was Gryffindor.
However, the little flash "test" was really nice, after that you pick out your wand, etc. Sadly, thats where it sorta ends.
Now, I would think that would be very nice if it would somehow become a mmorpg. Hell, I'd play it and I'm 30....I'd play it if it's done right. I think it would be nice seeing which house we would be elgible for (and I wouldnt "reset" my characters if I dont get the house I wanted). I could see a Harry Potter mmorpg pretty darn neat.
1. Quiddich would be interesting. Twitch-base gameplay..have your own teams (in each house) and you can only play on the field if you have that time picked. Spectator stands to see the game rather than be in it (Quiddich)
2. Get "XP" by learning beginner spells by sitting through classes (they pulled this off rather nicely in America's Army)...I think it could pay off to study..meaning trips to the library could open up another aresnal of spells...etc etc.
As a mmorpg it would be difficult to pull off (have maybe mini-server of 500 people max?) Like DnD is doing. I dont know... but you have the Black forest to test your newbie skills, then you could "graduate into a Magical College of sorts, then become a full fledge Wizard/Witch working for the ministry of Magic or creating your own havoc.
I think it would be interesting...difficult but interesting.

Only if I could play a Malfoy type character and wreak havoc.
Play tricks on other students.
Grow up, become a renegade wizard. And kill that nerdy harry! Muahaha
Will it become a MMORPG in the near future? 100 to 1, most likely not. Will it become a MMORPG ever? Most likely.
Will it probably suck? Yes.
Truthfully it'd be an odd universe to do, you'd have to do it just right to be a fun game, and to keep away from the whole EQ crap.
It's almost like what they did to MEO, just a EQ in Middle-earth's clothings. one million frodo wannabe's, HERE THEY COME!

A Harry Potter MMORPG is nearly impossible to pull off and I don't think it would be profitable. Young wizards (which is what you are suggesting) do not see any adventure. Harry just happened to be special in that sense. So they go to classes all day. Okay.
Quidditch. Yes, they have some offline games for this.. all incredibly easy might I add. A two year old could beat the games without losing once. They may even have an online option for this, that's as far online as I can see the harry potter thing going.
Perhaps you could pull this off as a SIM type game. Or you could just take the elements from the story and make your typical MMORPG. Two sides, Evil (Voldemort) vs Good.. you know, the usual. Skip over the whole student thing, maybe it's a tutorial or only lasts the first 10 levels or something like that. So advance pretty quickly to adulthood then set off on your own adventure. The thing is, it's really set in the real world.. there aren't REALLY fantasy lands, places humans shy away from yes... but it wouldn't too realistic if you didn't run into some muggles.
I'm just running all of the normal elements of an MMORPG in my head and I am familiar with all books and I have seen the three movies quite a few times now... just don't see it working. I think it would suck as an MMORPG. MEO has a better chance than this... and that in itself is full of problems. Not sure how they're going to pull it off and keep it in-check with the actual story. If they don't, I wont be mad-- unless of course they try to pawn it off as if it were in-check.
Hmm, my thoughts and opinions are rather scattered here. I could comment with a little more detail on every specific idea when it comes to a "Harry Potter MMORPG" if they are given. But in my opinion, keep it as a regular game... I like playing the hero. Oh, and that's another thing... all of those games are incredibly easy. I'm not sure why they make them for six year olds when the books are actually geared and are gearing even more so for the teenage audience.
Oh.. and this is somewhat off-topic but can anybody mail me a few recommendation for fantasy books? To give a comparison so you know my taste; I found Tolkien's works a little slow. The Hobbit was by far the best, the actual Lord of the Rings was simply a bore most of the time. Something a little more fast paced yet still in-depth and thriving would be great.

It would attract a younger set of players. So i thought it could be done along the lines off toontown.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
I was sorted into Griffyndor as well.
But this question arises again, and yet again with even more possiblities
sure the houses would be like realms in DAOC, but then you would have to take into the fact that there might be 8 year olds playing it...that means that the hack and slash norm of any other mmorpg might have to be changed a bit.
really confusing if you get into it...get exp by sitting in classes? what about getting exp by casting spells and killing things?
then you can buy new spells with the money you get...
hmm...nevermind, i sound stupid
lol

Harry Potter just doesn't seem to translate well into MMO format.... Harry and his buddies are the only ones who get into these adventures, the average Hogwarts student mostly just attends classes and miss out on the really fun stuff.
Pokemon on the other hand, is perfect for a mmorpg. Kids love pokemon! (I think)

A Harry Potter MMO would be neat, but it would need to be made by some1 with great experience and uber ideas. This game couldnt be a fighting MMORPG, abit more to the social. U should graduate by siiting in school and passing exams(u had to do it man ). Then u would choose a work and had to do it, if u dont go uyr fired, if u go u can even get promoted.
Would be cool, but really hard to make

There was a Harry Potter mmorpg in development for over 2 years but it got canned a little after the first movie was released. Check out details in I believe this years March or April Edition of Gamepro.

Now, this would be a great game, if pulled of correctly. Being the recovered Harry Potter addict that I am (I attended HPAA (Harry Potter Addicts Anonymous) for a while) I could input some damn good ideas for this.
However, I am leaving for work right now, so give me a few hours (eight or so) and I will get back to you with all my ideas.

Hey there I just joined the forums to talk abouts this. I just recently started to read the books. I was blown away. I am in love with them. The movies are amazing aswell. I have been searching for an MMORPG of Harry Potter I would be in love with it for sure. I had some Ideas on how to go about making the game seem alot bigger. They could add diffrent areas of the world. You could vist Romania or something. I still haven't finnished the 2nd book. But I think I read something about one kid saying that there saying how he choose to go to hogwarts. Maybe there are other schools that teach such things. Maybe going deeper into the world of harry potter. Dragons , mistical creatures, ect.... I can see a huge world when I see the books. As for other things can be made up but still feel like it can blend in the harry potter world.
Sorry wrong post
I'm going to pretend I didn't read this...
I used to like harry potter but it's kind of died for me, I think a Harry Potter MMO would probably end up like DDO/GW, the school would be like a town and there would be a bunch of instanced dungeons.

MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.
MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.
MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.
I think this sounds fascinating. 18 year old here who isnt SUPER into harry potter (i dont really even keep up with the books), but i've thought about it as an MMO many times. I think it could work... just recreate england, and have 'muggle' and 'wizard' areas. You can pick a class, such as combat magic, crafting magic, etc, but there will be certain spells anyone can do.
Intriguing, to say the least.
