Brings back lots of memories seeing Velah! The dx10 also really makes it look better. Nice.

I don't really care too much about the quality of DDO graphics/art but I have to say that whatever Turbine did for LOTRO is far better than DDO .
The new DX10 lightning is certainly nice, but I guess its the art or something. DDO trees look awful compared to LOTRO trees. Pretty sure it has not much to do with the graphics engine itself.
Some of the stuff on the Korthos island seem to be more in line with certain things in LOTRO, but a lot of the older stuff is a little I dunno blocky or whatever.
Not a big deal to me, I don't expect Turbine to go through and redo every single model. DDO is not that new of game really. Not super old but old enough.
But there is clearly, at least to me, a major difference in quality of looks between games (DDO and LOTRO) that I believe share a very similar engine.
Far as I know, they are the same engine. But I could be wrong. I could have sworn I read that in a DDO dev diary.

Different engine due to the different play mechanics. Background layout middleware is the same (for now, LoTRo will not be getting the UMBRA update until June). Once UMBRA is in place, the graphics hitches that do still appear should be a thing of the past.
As as been mentioned, graphics were never a main gripe about the game.
Personally what killed it for me was the lack of new players, when I started playing I did not want to play a MMO solo so would be looking for groups, and often those groups would just power run through missions.
Being told to wait at the entrance while 1 member completes the mission being my only real option for grouping really sucked.

Ah, Waterworks Part II. "You must not leave until you free Arlos!"
It is true that if you don't like playing with other people, DDO is probably not for you. That said, why didn't you just solo waterworks? And nowadays you could go hire a cleric hireling and go to town.
I've soloed more than half the quests in the game.. and you can solo all the explorer areas if you have a the right build and gear (haste, deathward, and blade barrier or wall of fire help there).
Very few quests require the entire party to be someplace.. WW 2, the Litany pre-raid.. can think of many others. A few require more than one player to proceed.. Xoran Cipher is notorious because you need four players to open the barriers.

I think you misread my post, my problem was I didnt want to solo and my only group options were people who were running alts. More often then not I would either be told to stand at the entrance while said player solo'd mission or else kicked from group when they found out I was new and not min/max'd to power through a dungeon/quest.
I cant speak about the game within the last 6 months, but the way it pretty much worked was some experienced player lvl'n an alt would snatch up a bunch of new players and do these runs. So even when I tried to start my own groups, people would leave once they realized I wasnt going to powerlevel them.
I loved the mechanics of the game, I loved how my wizard worked and how I had to pace myself, and that I could roleplay (the few times I got groups who wanted to just experience a location and not finish it asap.) Those were just too far and few to make the game worthwhile.

Ah, I see what you were trying to say now.
If you ever decide to try the game again, come to Thelanis. We have a good sized RP community and some guilds who make a point of RPing quests and helping new players.. Doctorwhofan doesn't RP, but her guild is very newbie friendly, as are the RP guilds that I know - Crimson Nexus, Fellowship of the Golden Night, Legatia Invictus and the The Order Of The Sword and Rose.

Hi! What he said! I try to get everyone involved in my parties! Send me a PM if you do join back. I'll list my alts and help you get started.
Yes, I am a gamer girl. Dungeons and Dragons Online: April 2006 THELANIS: Guild: Merc's Only. Trissa, Kleo, Sousake, Mulder, Roselyn, Caboose, Kaname, Scully, Courwin, Oncoming, Lanarissa, Doomlord, Tnannet, Healbotatron, keitherland, Keatheran, Allura, Riversong, Johnsmith, Jennysmith I also play Star Trek Online and LotRO, on occasion.
I just reinstalled today (after 3 corrupt downloads!!) and will probably be trying it out casually again with a friend. I think the 2 of us should have np doing content, dunno how he will feel able repeating content/quests multiple times but if nothing else, the first time through is always enjoyable.
TO be honest I have always like this game my only problem with it was looking for a group for hours on end (wasting $$$). I like the graphics, the itemization and the way I can bind my joystick to playing the game.
Graphics are awesome as well. it isn't sandbox like, but for a game to be as restrictive as people say it is it's fun.
Graphics are decent, level design is nothing more than mediocre.
Compared to what? What are, in your opinion, examples of good and bad design in DDO?
From what I've seen so far, I'd say level design is the best I have seen in any MMOG that I've played.
If anything is mediocre its the graphics. Armor sets, and weapon effects are somewhat lacking. Some animations are a little awkward. Still though, mediocre graphics from this era of games is still really good compared to 5-10 years ago. They are much better than WoW and only slightly worse than LotRO and AoC.

I'm with you. Like a lot of other vultures attacted by the stench of death, I've been playing Tabula Rasa for the last two weeks. I've seen a lot of comments in chat about how great the graphics are in that game. I think DDO's are better. . . or on par. . . or too different in worldview to compare meaningfully. There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of DDO, but picking on the way the world looks doesn't mean much to me. It has 2006 graphics that hold up against 2007 and 2008 graphics, in an era when a game with 2004 graphics is the industry leader.
