This question came from someone in a thread that was locked(big suprise) but anyway the question was:
I was just wondering about that 10,000 players per server thing, does that mean 10,000 players currently logged in or that about 10,000 people will create a character on that server?
The answer is it will allow 10000 concurrent users which means, thats how many can be logged on at the same time. That of course doesn't mean more can't register on the server, it simply means that no more than 10000 people can log in at the same time which is why lines form logging into a mmo. Since the moderation seemed a bit heavy handed on the thread I figured I'd still answer the queston for the person.

10,000 players, simultaneously logged in. Number of characters on the server will be significantly greater. Off the top of my head, I cant recall the exact proportions, but think around 3:1. That would mean the server could handle about 30,000 player characters and 10,000 simultaneous logins. They can "overload" the server with characters, because not everyone plays at the same time.
Typically, the ratio is low on a newly released game, because everyone wants to play a LOT of hours. As the server ages, they can raise the ratio, since average play-time goes down over time.
Cool, thanks for answering the question I was too lazy to re-post. One more though, as a comparison does anyone know how many characters WAR servers can handle? (last mmo I played)

Is this all you do? It is really sad going around and just posting "link?" to whenever common knowledge stuff is posted.
If you arent trolling, then i suggest going to the official boards and making an account. Make a post in the new commers forum and people will help you catch up.
Seriously you asked for a link for the fact that it will be pay to play....and also about the 10k number.....both common knowledge and developer stated.

I wonder when they'll test out this THEORY that their server can hold 10,000 people online at once.
Guess all that will happen the day before launch.
Unless of course they threw 10,000 bots online and called it a success.
during the public beta
during the public beta
If putting 10,000 on at once turns the game into a slideshow, will they delay the release?
It would depend on how many servers they have and their plans for distributing the game.

i would think
Class one idiot, When you say server it is a (server cluster/ infinite number of scaleable resources), the sizing has been done upto circa 20k+ concurrent users online in a single world instance, this is not new technology and is proven.
This means that 50-100k real users may be reqistered against the world instance.
This is not theory, the way this actually works is that resource from the cluster is allocated as per players in areas of the world instance. Some resource will be dedicate to chat , and other ingame systems accordingly.
Youre ignorance is ammusing, go do some research and stop wasting peoples time with lame troll attempts.
(And what is stated above is reference to Dev released info, go search it out at DFO/forums if you can be bothered)

not really but if it did 100% positive they would delay

they haven't put 10,000 people on a server , so they don't know what will happen. You are the one who is ignorant.

they must have found a way to simulate it for the most part
or they just that good at debugging and coding
