CCP Games posted yesterday that they have set a new record for concurrent players online in a single sharded world...10,744! Here is their official word on this:
You did it again!
A new simultaneous player record was set tonight, Sunday, when 10.744 players were on at the same time. This beats the old record by more than 500 players! The EVE game servers ran without any problems during this heavy load, so the recent hardware upgrades and performance tuning is paying off. This also confirms that the game servers are ready for the next release and the expected influx of new players.
UPDATE: It appears that they smashed their record again today. This time reaching 11,246 players online in a single world. The snippet from their site on this:
And again!
Another player record was set tonight, Monday, when 11.246 players were on at the same time. This is the first time a record is set on a Monday. Again, the servers weren´t affected, leaving us with plenty room for more players. Come and join us, you wont regret it!
Excellent work guys!

There are so many new faces everyday ingame its scary to think where it will go from here, and all this Pre Shiva (Shiva is a major upgrade to EVE due around Nov 3rd). EVE-Online is going to set many a record yet I can remember reading that they can handle 100,000 users.....
WTG CCP! and EVE players everywhere!
I agree they deserve it. The game is leaps above and beyond what anyone else has come out with.
The game has evolved so much from my first stage of beta. The only game's that rival EVE are like Americas Army and Ghost Recon in terms of "quality".
Nice accomplishment. However it's not true that they are the first mmorpg to have these numbers online on a single shard simultaneously. That was off course Anarchy Online, which also featured the "single world/shard" thing when they released (they now have two instances). They sold 50-100k boxes in those first weeks and I am pretty sure they had at least 20k people online simultaneously in that single universe in the first weeks.
Bugged and lagged, but still. I guess the need for a mmorpg to stand out in some way is is deep. Not sure if Eve Online needs this sort of number-trickery, since most people seem very positive about the game.
YO YO YO

the number of people playing was cool.. what was better was i had NO lag at all...(kicks self for ebaying first account) again!
We should expect more and more records like this one. I play this game for 6 months and I still feel newbie sometimes
Skill system is great... More people must see this game
what i would like to know is how many quit playing ...
well i did gave them a chance twice first i played for 4 months then i gave up on the buggs and lag..
7 months later i came bacl hoping that the full version of the game i bought would be patched up enough to work .. well i was wrong..
and i know that my corp quit playing what those who are joining the game now better not expect alot.
this is how ever a fantastic game when it works ...
thing is just that to much time can be wasted when you get killed ny buggs that they say are not there.
so i quit ... but i would love to play again when i see in the news that the game is out of beta and is full product with few minor bugs in stead of spending 2 weeks of almost every month on patching and pathing the patces and fixing patch bugs...
some may say i'm just a sore looser but i'm only telling the truth a bout the game.
i've been playing games for over 20 years all kinds of games and many have had all kinds of bugs eve is just one of many ... but EVE is also the first game i have paid so much for playing so the other bugged games are still on the shelf some i can sell for more then i bought them but EVE never i think i'll frame it .. mostly because it's the biggest software success i have witnessed in Iceland and it reminds that everything is possible even here in the middle of the atlantic..
