So, the only thing that upsets me about Requiem is that it didn't show up on the Custom List I created, which specifically only lists the "free" and "micro" games. Since Requiem is listed with a "?" it wasn't coming up on my custom free-list. If it had, I'd probably have tried it a _lot_ sooner than just last week.
Anyways, Requiem... Seriously how can I not be interested in a game named after the Latin term for funeral (Missa defunctorum or "mass for the departed"). I've always been a horror-buff, and the gorier the better. So when I found this game, the _only_ game currently listed in the Horror genre, I just had to give it a try.
Firstly, I am normally an EVE Online player, but I'm always on the hunt for a nice "backup" game to enjoy when I need a break, as I'm sure everyone does with whatever their regular game-of-choice is. My backup game _has_ been Perfect World International for some time now (which I still haven't written a review for, and really need to...) and I've enjoyed it for the most part. It's not dark enough for my disturbed taste, but I enjoy it.
Anyways, I was very pleased to find Requiem was not only free to play, but pretty gory and dark, just as the website leads one to believe.
Downloading of the client took a little longer than I'm used to, via my highspeed Internet connection, but it wasn't too bad. Installation went without problem (install with an Admin-level account). Launching of the game client had a weird stumble. I kept getting an NTFS permission error on some folder within the directory structure I installed things to. And even though the NTFS permissions were correct (my user account has full-access to my "Games" install path) things just wouldn't kick into gear. So, just for kicks I launched the game client under the Admin-level account, and once it got to the login screen I closed the client and re-launched it with my regular user-level account. This time things worked fine. When I have enough time to spare, I'll go back and figure out which folder it was choking on and relay this information to the folks over at Gravity Interactive.
The first thing I noticed is the character-creation experience is pretty lacking. Your character appears sort of "flat", so what you're looking at while creating the character is certainly not what you see once you've finished creating the character and return to the character-selection screen (where your character is much better looking, FYI). However, the character modification is very limited. The user is stuck choosing from a handful of static hair-styles and faces. There is no type of height, weight, color, etc. adjustments available. If there's one thing about me and MMOs, it's that I like to feel my character is _mine_. It helps with getting into the RolePlay aspect of a game, but it isn't a game-breaker, so I carried on.
I created myself a hottie female Kruxena. They sorta look like a Dark Elf, but hey, whatever, I'm waiting to see some gore, so I continue,
There is no stat-customization either, so you're locked into whatever you're locked into, which I also didn't like. I appreciate having the ability to change up a few things here and there, but again not a game-breaker.
Once the character-creation was done, and I returned to the character-selection screen two things made me smile. One, was that my character was much nicer looking than the character-creation procedure lead me to believe she would be. The other was the extra little security feature they have. Not only do you need to log into the game client with your username and password, but once you select one of your characters you have to mouse-select (no keyboard here, no keyloggers won't scam things) a 4-character PIN. This is not something I've seen in other games, and though it seemed a bit inconvenient being unable to use the keyboard to enter my PIN, I actually now like it, and it totally makes sense. On the chance that your username and password get compromised, the scammer would also need to know your individual character PINs in order to delete or use your individual characters. This was a really nice little feature, and more gaming authors should consider adding this little feature.
Once I got into the world of Requiem the first thing I did was turn all the graphics options up to Max. I like to make a point of really pushing a game client, and my personal workstation, to the edge, and this game runs _great_ with all Max-settings. The characters are very nice to look at, the world is detailed and dark (just the way I like it) and most of the NPCs I've run into so far are nicely detailed as well.
I struck out and went to attack the first NPC I saw, and surprisingly I almost got my arse kicked. Wow! That never happens. I was level 1, and he was level 1, and normally you easily slaughter the lower-level NPCs. Again, I was pleasantly surprised. I dislike the XP-grind, but even more than that, I _hate_ easy games.
I like the fact that I can use the keyboard as well as the mouse to move around. Not only that, but you can customize the keys you use. They default to the Q, W, E, A, S, D sequence, which works nicely for me, as that's what I normally prefer. Mouse-move is basically a click-move type situation, but you can mouse-view of course, which is an absolute necessity.
Game-play was smooth as I worked my way towards the town I saw, not far off in the distance, where I proceeded to scoop up my first batch of quests or jobs. I also took the time to interact with all the townfolk I could find, got myself used to the various controls, customized what I needed to in order to be comfortable with my toolbars and keystrokes, and ventured off to kill stuff.
As I mentioned already, normally I dislike the XP grind. I've come to enjoy the way EVE's "real-time" skill training works over the years, and that's just what I like. However, as long as I enjoy playing a game, then it doesn't feel like a grind. So whether it's a "real-time" training or an XP-grind, if I'm having fun, then I don't care.
Well, come to find out I really enjoy Requiem, I didn't think I would (I'm always mister negative when it comes to trying MMOs, heh). I like the darkness of the game (it could be darker, but I'm strange that way, LOL), I like the visual appearance of the characters, the in-game world, the NPCs, I like the slaughtering of NPCs, the flopping-around of the dead bodies, the decapitating of heads and removal of limbs, as well as the fact that I've been killed at least a dozen times already. I've had no problems getting into groups when I wanted (and needed, with a few of the quests I've had so far). I've enjoyed the community so far, though there's not _much_ RolePlaying that I can see yet.
I've already reached level 10 and beyond (approaching level 18 now, I think), so I've completed the "Job Quest" you get at level 10 and selected my first job. I'm now a "Rogue" and can duel-wield swords and "claws" which I really like. My lady Kruxena has obtained some very neat skills, one being a Poison strike, a number of self-buffs, and a type of "stealth" mode where-in I can walk around at a slower speed, but go unseen by anything less than 5-levels above my current level. Some of the higher-level players I've seen have some pretty sick looking mounts, which I'm jealous over, but makes me look forward to my time to come,
I've already found a few nice "farming" areas, where I can loot things like food-buffs and stuff to sell to the NPC traders or lower-level players. The food-buffs are very cool, keeps you from having to purchase potions,
As with any free-to-play MMO there is an Item-Mall and a "Premuim Account" choice, but I don't foresee myself trying either of these. The whole point of having a free, backup, MMO to play is the _FREE_ part, LOL. So regardless of the possible perks available, I'll play for free,
Even though it's listed as Horror, it's _really_ not _that_ much different than your average hack-n-slash MMO. But still, the Horror was the part that attracted my attention, so whatever works, right? It is gorier than your average MMO, like I said, the body-flopping part really tickles my horror-funny-bone, LOL. It's visually appealing, plays nicely, haven't had problems with getting connected, staying connected, or lag yet, and just works as a free, backup MMO, for me... I'd recommend if you're looking for a nice free, backup MMO, that you give Requiem a shot. And maybe I'll see you in-game. We can go decapitate some baddies,

I think not choosing your stats in this game might be for the best. Although I would like to, understanding what the stats do is not an easy task. There is an initial impression of what individual stats do, but further investigation continues to debunk it. Such as it was assumed the effects of stats increase linearly. Some of them do, some of them use exponential growth.
On EXP grind, with premium it isn't too bad. Up until 60 without quests it typically takes 300 hard monsters to level. Once at 60 though... it gets exponentially harder. The exp needed increases 8 million per level. Thats another 600~800 elite monsters. Also the quests stop at around level 64 if you are using maximum exp bonuses. However, it is a little explainable as they don't want people hitting the cap of 71 too soon. They want it to be something very difficult that only a handful of people do.
This usually improves every 2 months with a major update. Sometimes the level cap is increased, they also add quests with high rewards to pad levels. Like before September there were no level 40+ quests and the cap was 59. Before November there were no level 63+ quests and the cap was 69. Now there are a couple huge quests above 63 and the cap once again raised.
Another advantage to the PIN security is that you can only run 1 Bot client at a time. This heavily reduces the burden on the GM staff to find and ban bots.
Thumbs up alright >_>
Is this just another korean lineage F2p grinder knock off?
Im interested in the horror theme, is it worth my time?
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
Hell yes! You got to try this one, its not L2 grinder, its mostly quest base, some say you may hit some small grind spots, but no where near L2, plus it has the option to use w,a,s,d and you can jump and strafe.

Its a grinder at points and a quest based WoW style with a more mature theme at others. At higher levels without the item mall the grind is so terrible you will loose your mind. I believe getting level 60-70 alone in Requiem takes about as long as It would take you to get from 1-70 In wow today. Its still easier than FFXI which I enjoy but since most people solo it makes the grind tidious and boring. Play it for a few days for the first 40 levels without an item mall. If you still enjoying it by level 40 without an item mall spend a few bucks and keep going until your sick of it.
