Level 80, what now?

A few of you may remember that I recently posted a post asking whether or not to return to the game. After getting some endorsements I decided to pony up to 14.99 and give this game another chance. (Partly due to the inexplicable pity I felt looking at snow mammoth banner ads)

I started by rerolling a HoX, it was great fun for awhile. I got to level 16, did some light low level pvp; I had a good time. Along the way I was astonished at both how much smoother the game played and how great the visuals were. So, after beating some mentally handicaped Bear Shaman a few times in White Sands, I went off to do a quest (since you need to be 19 to do the last bit of tortage). Suddenly, a great wave of boredom fell over me, as I realized that I hated these fetch quests.

My initial plan was to reroll HoX to escape the needlessly convoluted barbarian class, a class weighed down by long attack animations and a redundant set of skills. But after I attained some fire slash ability I realized that this class will be no different. The animations were long, even at this low level; and the pvp would really end up being the same in the end.

Realizing this; I hop off the hox and take my level 80 barbarian for a whirl. After fixing up some hotkeys I go and get a feel for the class again by doing a villa. After that I run out back to town and to Kheshatta to see whats going on.

What greeted me initally was an empty zone. Nobody wanted to do an instance, nobody was there pvping... I swithced instances and I found something truly weird. A bunch of guys in a circle fighting one another one on one. I witnessed an Assassin essentially (and easily) kill a guardian One on One with the assassin barely getting damaged.

I visited the border kingdoms : Empty

I queued up for a few mini games : Nobody

Then suddenly, a mini game pops. Oh boy!

I zone into the capture the flag mini game, I run around for a bit; lost... encounter a ranger. I knock him over, use cyclone of steel; watch his HP barely move. I get rooted, fumble to find my root break; I break the root run at him, stun, cyclone of steel again; crap damage, he runs, kills me... Ive been gone awhile, I guess.

So to close this rambling story the game ended with my team getting steamrolled, I pop out in khesh and I'm beginning to wonder why the hell I came back.

1 - I had thought melee combat was fixed, but they did not address the ridiculous length of the animations, they only made the combos a step or two shorter.

2 - Casters still reign over everyone else because they don't need to deal with the aforementioned issue.

3 - The games excess of abilities and key presses make this game really difficult to get the hang of again.

4 - Even on the most populated pvp server; Tyranny (my residence), there is little to no level 80 action. Everyone sits in a circle and duels for pvp levels since the guards police things far too strictly.

5 - I dont have to stomach to level all the way to 80 again. After several MMOs of this fedex crap; combo'd with this frustrating town design, I just dont have to stomach to go through it again.

Am I missing something? Wheres the endgame stuff?

Maybe I've just grown out of this genre...

    Wrong. check timing.

Any Clothie is dead meat if you play the game and pay minimum attention to resistances.

my mistake, the damage now happens in real time instead of being applied as a burst once the animation completes. That doesnt meant the animations are still far too long winded for melee characters. For a game touting real time combat, this isn't really a good idea.

My only experience with one upon returning was getting chain rooted; but hey, it was two on one anyway.

    Allow me to clarify.

As a barbarian, I have 5 directional attacks. I have several combos. After those combos I have several self buffs. Furthermore, I have a anti knock back, an stun / fear / root break, and a root / trap break. Oh, and there's a stamina refresh buff... And the weapon swap hotkey, my two stuns and my knockback(s). So yes, there are a lot of things to relearn and re-memorize. Not to say that this system is sound by any stretch of the imagination, the sheer amount of hotkeys necessary are staggering, and what should be entertaining combat is bogged down by an excess of abilities.

Case in my point, my level 16 HoX has three self buffs. Not even a fourth of a level cap and he has three self buffs.

Believe it or not, guilds are not clammoring for a no name level 80 barbarian in tier 1 blue crap gear who barely remembers how to play. As much as I'd like to give it a shot, siege pvp doesn't seem approachable to someone like me.

Have they added a new batch of fetch quests and kill quests? I heard the new zone is nice; but even still; my concerns stand.

you won't find much endgame stuff in age of conan, its mostly a good play and good for lookin at

if you can find something good about it let us know

but hey this is a good watch ---> click here

maybe you could take up some nice video editing skills? the game seems like a fun game to do that with

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

The game must seriously be an RPers heaven though. Not mainstream so most of the greifer douche bags stay out; but popular enough to sustain a serviceable population.

I'll wait until the mergers to make my final choice.

Well Ham, its kind of pathetic that pvping on white sands isle is more fun than pvping at the endgame. On white sands, you dont need to worry about micromanaging an excess of abilities, or people running to guards, or badly designed capture the flag maps...

Well, the little bit of fun I had in tortage (mage quest line) and in white sands was worth the 15 bucks...Well, not really; but at least it wasnt a complete waste.

"open" beta pvp was kinda fun too

honestly as i leveled my character i didn't understand why i heard so much crying around me

i thought "well most games get pretty thing in the middle.. just gotta tough it out till the end then the real game begins"

what was funny is that so many people quit before even getting to endgame.. that i don't understand, unless somehow they could tell it wasn't going to be good

combat was fine, it just isn't enough by itself

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

Combat is fine if you're a caster. If you think Barbarians are bad, check out Conquerors and the ridiclous amount of things they need to do, all while dealing with the combo system and overly long attack animations.

My HoX is level 20 now and the game is still fun; but once you get to the end there's just nothing there, and as you play more and more the game is less and less fun.

What to do at level 80? Cancel or roll a new toon.

FC started revamping and fixing the game from the ground up as most of the stuff didn't work at release. So I would say a couple of months and it should be nearing a proper release state nearly 1year after its release.

If this is the way you feel then sorry the AoC melee combat system just isn't for you. Personally I prefer the melee combo system over anything I have played earlier. And I find it a lot of fun to learn to master.

Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
    On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom

OP, I think you answered your own question, there is almost no end game, and regrinding an Alt to 80 isnt fun when you are covering the exact same ground

Guild Keep Mat grind and PvP Level grind are about all their is to do at the top end, not much Game there at all, that is the #1 reason why 80-90% of the player base left ... no Content.
