Well, after a number of weeks of arguing with the game, trying to get past it's wacky bugs and crazed servers, finally, it has beaten me. This new problem is both unbeatable, and REALLY REALLY REALLY STUPID.
Now, my PC aint half bad. I recently put a super-high end P4 processor in there.... only real problem now is the cruddy video card (GeForce 2..... bleh). Before open beta hit, I was running Ryzom in the FBT on 800 by 600 resolution. Note, that even then it didnt work too well, for whatever reason.
Yet the open beta hits, and after finally getting INTO the game, suddenly...... uh..... wait....... what happened to my resolution choice? It's gone!
The 800 by 600 res choice is just..... gone. Not there anymore. Yes, it is a stupid problem..... But it's the kinda thing that will stop people from being able to play this. There are going to be those who just dont have good machines at all..... and now, they wont be able to PLAY at all. I, am now one of them. The game ran rather..... not good on 800 by 600 (which is stupid, considering that much better looking *RECENT* games run at higher resolution/higher settings and run just fine...), but on the next highest choice, 1000-something by something (I forget the numbers), it runs about as well as a dead frog with a house strapped on it's back.
Now, normally, when a game is a bit much for my PC to run (generally because of that cruddy vid card), I just say "ah, ok, well, I plan on replacing that card within a month or so anyway, it will be fine then". With Ryzom, however, I will NOT be doing this.
The fact that the devs REMOVED this resolution...... it's mind-boggling, really. There just isnt any LOGICAL reason for it. Especially since it would allow those with less-good PCs to play their game.... equaling MORE customers. Yet, for reasons unknown, they just..... took it out, when it had been there all the time before. Thsi strikes me as a bad omen.... if the devs for this would do something THAT pointless, then how are they gonna be at actually RUNNING the game? I mean, I've seen some bad devs before in other MMOs.... but this is the first time something this..... POINTLESS has been done.... as far as I can see anyway.
This, combined with the ever-screwy bugs, AND the worst server stability I've seen in a looooong time, has unfortunately killed Ryzom for me. Even with a new vid-card, I wont be picking this up, as more problems could (and probably will) arise. It's just a bad omen when a dev team does something like this....
Mainly, Im just posting this to vent a bit. I had been looking forward to this game for a long time. Been following it's development constantly for like a year. And then, I get to play it, and its essentially a technical disaster. I envy those who are able to play it without problems... they are the lucky ones. Unfortunately, a LARGE portion of the games population ATM is having goofy issues like this. Sad.
I was expecting great things from Ryzom. Yet, I havent seen enough of the gameplay to even know about that. Even before this idiotic res issue, the games servers and bugginess would either boot me, or get me stuck in a wall or something. Every.....freaking.....time.
So, I bid farewell to Ryzom...... and good luck to those who are sticking with it. You'll probably need it.....

geforce 2 is about 5 years old... its pushing the limits there tbh.
Blaming ure reasons for leaving on Ure GF2 is stupid. I bet Lineage 2 wont run on GF2 or EQ2 for that matter.
Beta Tested: Lineage 2, Ryzom, City of Heroes, RYL, EverQuest 2 World Of Warcraft European

Actually, no.
I played L2 on this machine (for a short time.... didnt like it much). Ran beutifully. Maybe not on the absolute highest settings, but I didnt have it on the lowest resolution either.
Like I said, Im not running OLD games on here... all are recent.
L2 was one example, others are CoH, UT2004 (runs VERY well....), EVE Online (absolutely gorgeous) even when I was playing the free but cruddy trial of SWG, that ran with a good frame rate. Was also playing FFXI till recently, that one ran without a hitch, and despite how I dont like it, it looked great, grand frame rate. Again, not highest resolution there, but not low either.
Yet, with Ryzom, even the lowest resolution ran badly.... and Ryzom is NOT as good looking or graphically impressive as many on that list. The graphics of FFXI, EVE, and L2 completely blow it away.
I could go on with that list, but you get the idea. If I was running it with this machines ORIGINAL processor, a Celeron, then yes.... it would be entirely the machine. But Im not..... a very high-end P4 processor was added.
Ryzom is the ONLY game I've had any trouble with on this machine in a long while.
And note, that the resolution thing was NOT the only problem... in its current state, the game is a buggy mess, and the servers are the worst I've encountered in quite some time (I dont have to prove that one.... any player could tell you they are pretty.... not good).
Plus, they go and REMOVE one of the res choices! What POSSIBLE REASON is there for that? If the devs make a dumb, pointless move like that NOW, who knows what kind of chaos they could cause later.
That is the reason for this whole thing.
Also, it should be noted that I tried to run Rzyom for a bit on my friends machine: he has a high end processor as I do, but his video card is ALSO much better. Yet, still stuck on the lower resolutions, with a kind of cruddy frame rate. Granted, it worked (sorta...still many problems), but it was about as impressive as a pickle.
So no... it's not just my machine.
i always disregard reviews and complaints from people with hardware 4+ years old
Its like playing ps2 game on a ps1... just wont work.
Beta Tested: Lineage 2, Ryzom, City of Heroes, RYL, EverQuest 2 World Of Warcraft European

bla bla bla ..resolution...bla bla bla graphics
bah! wth!
Um, yeah.... except for the fact that ANY GAME OTHER THAN RYZOM works JUST FINE.
Also, did you even READ that? I said, specifically, that I also tried it on a friends machine (one who had some interest in it, and wanted me to show it to him...), who does NOT have a "4+ year old card", and it STILL DIDNT WORK RIGHT. So, again..... NOT just MY machine and its old card. My friends machine with his NEW card STILL had crazy wonky problems. Quite new indeed.... he only bought the machine like 3 months ago (pricey, too).
Plus, if you want to get real technical, there are a grand total of TWO games out currently that DONT work with a GF2: KOTOR, and Doom 3. That's it. Those are the only ones. I can, and often do, run any other game currently available on this machine.
Also, my beef with this is that it DID used to work. Granted, it had to be run on low res, but it worked. They TOOK THE LOW RES OUT, after it had ALWAYS BEEN IN THERE. This is a move by the devs that HAS NO LOGICAL REASON. It makes no sense at all. A goal of this type of game is to be open to as many players as possible.... more players=more monthly money for them. That's one of the reasons why MMOs have so very many graphics options..... so that even people with total crap machines can run them. By removing that res choice, those with lower-end machines can no longer play.... meaning LESS money. Doesnt that seem.... well.... totally stupid?
And, YET AGAIN, I will also point out the fact that this is NOT my only reason. The game is also very buggy..... and the servers are downright terrible. AND, if the devs could make a move that is so TOTALLY ILLOGICAL, what kind of chaos will they bring to the game in the future? It's a bad omen.... smells like SOE/SWG.
This game is shipping in just 2 weeks. It is in no condition for that. And no, Im not the only one who thinks so.... this is a general consensus of the players... most believe it should have a couple more months before shipping, to remove bugs/craziness. Any other dev team WOULD probably delay it to do that.... the only one I can think of that would release in that state is Funcom.
So, again, no, has nothing to do with "old card", or anything like that. Tried it on a faster machine with a NEW card, it STILL malfunctions.
So dont say stuff like that without READING, in FULL, the previous posts, which you obviously DIDNT.
Oui..... I do believe I'll just leave this topic alone now.... arguing takes so much time.... and it feels like Im arguing with Nintendrones.....
damit dude..give up!
Quit being assholes and read his post again. He makes a good point.. and about the game, he is right, it makes no logical sense.. it's asif they actualy CHOOSE to restrict the number of players, I could give one possible reason for.. those with lower end systems have more lag, and therefore, lag those around them(not sure if this is totaly right, but I have been lagged by someone else who was on a older machine)
Now..as for it running buggy, it is. (radion 9800 pro, p4 3ghz 1mb chace, hyper thread, 800 fsb, 2gb ram, dual chan, 2x sata HD's raided, 64 total gb) and with that specs I was getting the stupid'server stalled, please wait' about every 2 seconds, and So many dissconects it wasen't funny..
Now.. take that into consideration when I tell you what I did. I then installed the game on another machine(550 mhz AMD pro, 64 meg geforece 4 vid card, 28 gig HD, slow as hell, 192 ram, works fine.. except when I put the 32 meg geforece 2 into it.. then dosen't run..at all(Comp freezes) Tried again on another p4 (2.4ghz, put the radion 9800 pro into this, 60 gb hd, 512 ram) and it ran fine.. still buggy and laggy, but fine.
Now.. All I can say, is that this open beta(which SHOULD be the final step before realse.. kinda like a extended stress test, all the major work SHOULD be finished at this point) and the game feels more like a stage 1 beta or late Alpha. Things like the laggyness, the fact that the NPC's advise you to go to the mainland at 20, and when u do, you are screwed(unless u get into a group of higher level players) and things like the crafting errors and missing names(quest: kill 5 <Error name 0000933115 type sh> of any type ..etc etc.. ) and similar effects when u open (quarter a corpse) forage, craft, leave or enter an area, pick a skill(Skills that have icons, a + or - effect or credit, but descriptions that look much like that one above).
Sorry.. but Ryzom needs at least another SOLID(And I mean solid.. no sleep for you dev's) of work to even hit the area of releasable games. They could easily put another 2 months into it to make it a finished(as far as mmorpg's go anyways. we know none are ever really finished) game.
Dunno.. but with the uninspiring combat system, lack of simple abilities such as jump, swim under water, climbing, etc, and the kinda lame attempt to camaflauge all this with beautiful graphics(really.. I have to say that the graphics are great.. ) makes me want to play the beta to the end(as long as I am not board) see if they plan on improving on any of my gripes, adn if not.. mvoe on.
Ah well. it will be some time before a mmorpg comes out that TRULY breaks the mould and sticks fast.
I was able to get Open Beta to run on my machine with a GeForce2, if that's any consolation. It's not the old video card that's the problem; it's probably the crappy software that's the problem. I know you aren't the only one having problems, and some people are having problems despite fabulous, shiny new video cards.
(Edit, to the previous poster: I have the 64M GeForce 2. Maybe 32 wasn't enough?)

This is where I draw the line: __________________.
well.. the list of diffrent components I have used, over the past 2 days(I was only in the open beta, not before, not sure how that much helps) are: radion 9800 pro 128 meg, geforece 4 (MMX?) 64 meg, geforce 2 32 meg and (Honest) a 8 meg pci card(this one worked..the 32 didn't, but this one did.. Do not ask me to explain why) I don't evne know what the 8 meg one was.. but it was OLD...
CPU's worked on were 500mhz amd, 2.4 ghz p4, 3.0 ghz hyper thread 800 mhz fsb 1 mb cache (sorry..not sure definate specs on the 2.4, but it is a run of the mill system.. friend's system, refurbished unit, cheapo quality)
192 ram, 1 gb ram(Dual chan) and 2 gb ram(dual chan) (the 192 was with the 500 mhz board)
The game worked with them all, but funny enough, it bugged out more often on the 3.0 ghz than any others.
I tried swapping all vid cards omn all three systems (except the pci on the 3.0 ghz, and the radion 9800 pro on the 500 mhz) and the ram I swapped between the two p4's. Honestly.. I could not find anything except the motherboard/CPU which limited getting into the game or not, except in the case with the 32 meg geforce 2.(this one woulden't let me in on any system.)
Letting me into the game has nothing to do with how the game played.. the 9800 pro was the smoothest, and the 8 meg card I pretty much coul ddo jack while I waited for things to load. I could log in, but do shit(had to restart comp, and the graphics were just mucked)
Some of the tests I did just don't make sense. (the 8 meg working but the 32 meg not? the 3ghz being more buggy and unstable than the 2.4ghz?)
heh i just couldnt help myself i still cant believe people use hardware 4+ year old. 1-3 years is fine but after that ure likely to find new games wont play on it like doom 3 etc.

No actually he isn't making a good point. He is trying to blame performance issues he has on the game client. When fact of the matter is it is not the client. Any game released recently shouldn't even be attempted on anything less then a geforce 3. 90% of all current game requirements say as much.
His whole problem is like someone said earlier. He is using 4+ year old hardware. The whole 800x600 argument is pointless to. As just like what Microsoft did with Dos. Developers are trying to do with 800x600. By mid 2005 you won't be able to find one current game that offers anything less then 1024x768 as it should be. If you can't get a game to run in anything but 800x600 you shouldn't be playing.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
Well put Roin.... I try to NOT go onto boards anymore. One hype says "Best game in the world" one right after it says "This game sucks!" you have to love opinions from people with so little access to vocabulary. And the peeps that complain about a game not running on this video card or needing more ram is a waste of time. Fooking video cards and ram are cheap. Even if your dirt poor and can't buy one, then stop playing computer games till you can. Those are the same type that complain about paying a monthly fee to play online games. What??? They think games fall from heaven? and no company deserves to make a profit? Developers shouldn't get payed for all their blood sweat and tears that go into the making of these? You can get 200 hours of entertainment a month for 15 bucks! Go to McDonalds twice and all you get is clogged arteries. Have been playing Saga and still not sure will buy. I like the original concept and many things about the game. There are some flaws and it didn't quite suck me in. Been playing games since I beta tested Meridian59 and know my addiction well enough to think I probably will cave as I have been gameless for two months.
