Again, take it in context. They said they have more content in this game than in all "their" games combined. They say the game is massive, obviously they would. And quite frankly...what did you expect from the first video after announcement of the game?
When will they learn? Game developers keep falling into this same trap. This game seems to be two years away from release, yet they already want to get people excited about it before they have anything to show. They should have kept it down to a press release, and a website with forums. All this other garbage is only going to build hopes and expectations into deep orbit for gamers that are hungry for something new. Inevitably, BioWare won't be able to deliver enough to make up for their own hype engine.
Yeah. And if they had only released a website and forum, people would be whining that there is nothing new to show.
Come on. This is just silly. There is no pleasing the crowd of gamers these days.
As for WesKhan...I'm not even going to enter the discussion about "true" gamers. I hate that discussion with a passion because elitism among gamers is poison which creates forum-wars like over at the DF Forums.
In closing, if you don#t want to get hyped up, then ignore what they release and just wait until the game actually launches and check then. No one forces you to watch the developement process. For those of us who take enough interest in the concept and the ideas of the game,, well, we would like to have updates.
As I said...no pleasing the crowds of today.
I thought you would reply with something about "elitism". I knew I should have completed what I was going to say. The thing is that "true" MMO gamers don't want more single player aspects in MMOs, they want a sandbox. Casual gamers want something easier and more single-player like, and this is who they are probably going to aim for (like all the other idiot developers). The problem here is that it is completely USELESS to try and get a casual gamer crowd, as they will almost always be pleased with their WoW. They don't want a new MMO because they don't care about them enough to go looking for one. They're "casuals". Besides, there's no way in hell Bioware is going to create a casual enough game to match that of WoW.
Creating an MMO for casual gamers today is suicide. Their game is going to be destroyed. They need to focus on "true" gamers. This is what I mean, not elitism.
Alright. I take back the elitism statement, though you probably know where I was coming from, particularly on these forums.
I'll have to disagree with you though. This game has a better chance than most to succeed where many others failed. First, the IP. Yes, Star Wars will attract a lot of people...and not all of them "true" gamers.
Second, the basic setting in the IP. WoW is fantasy and I don#t know about you, but me personally, I am sick and tired of Fantasy games. The only Sci-i game currently out there is EVE, which is nothing for the casual gamer to be honest. CoX might come close, but that is super-heroes, not really sci-fi. So, their setting is different and caters to a different type of player.
Third, their stories. Yes, I said it, their stories. BioWare is known for storytelling and a lot of people will play this because of that (depending on how the development continues obviously). If they made it a hard-core sandbox games, the people who loved KOTOR but generally dislike MMO's would be even more put off. This way, they might attract those people, too.
All of these reasons do not guarantee that TOR will be a success. I don#t know if it will be. That depends on too many things that are currently unknown. Does it have the chance to succeed? Yes, I'm pretty sure it does.
And for the "true" gamers, there are games like Earthrise, Darkfall, Mortal Online and Fallen Earth in production. So I don't see anything to worry about for anyone right now.
If it's anything like pre cu/nge SWG,i may give it a shot. So far, i am not impressed.
Don't hold your breath. With all the "heroic" and "iconic" talk going on it is, indeed, shaping up to what they tried to do with the NGE. Less alot more crafting and other features that, to me, make it seem like you are "living in the Star Wars universe".
But hey, it's their game, they can do what they want and I don't have to like it. Or buy it. Or try it.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I will say one thing in the games defense (Probably one of the only things) the combat with lightsabers for so early on looks very fluid and well done.

Sorry this isn't pre-cu SWG. This is based off the KOTOR stories which is about jedi vs sith war before Darth Vader was even born. So when people start rolling jedi and sith don't be too shocked now.

Sorry you can't read. No where did I say it was or that I wanted it to be SWG pre-cu. No where did I say people shouldn't "roll jedi and sith" that it was wrong or would shock me. Your words look completly moronic now. Congrats.
I know full well what the story is about. No where in that story, however, does it mandate that this game can't be more encompassing of all aspects of the universe. Encompassing means including, by the way, which doesn't mean you can't "roll a jedi or sith". It means you can do that as well as have the many non combat options a game like SWG-pre nge or UO had. It means you appeal to even more folks and have a greater chance at success.
And this isn't just for this title. This is for any title launching today. It just makes good sense to offer a truly well rounded list of features/gameplay options.
So, I put my opinion to you, don't be too shocked when this game does about as well as AoC or WAR, two other notable games that didn't offer up the well rounded gameplay options I speak of.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Good lord, could that video be anymore Jedi centric? Ah well, with the art style, the announcement of microtransactions, and the general direction the game seemed to be going, I can't say I'm very excited about this.
You do realize that the time period this game is taking place in is Jedi/Sith centric right? The guy even MENTIONS it, but I guess you weren't listening.
There were also pikes, force powers, blasters, rifles, droids, and swords. I'm sure there will be even more but as far as we know this is pre-alpha.
As far as the game goes. Art style I can live with. Permanent choices that actually shape our characters is a HUGE plus. Companion characters that also have a storyline is a big step in the MMO world. IMO this game will put the RPG in MMORPG. I don't expect it to be a PvP game nor do I expect it to be a PvE raid game. I think this game is all about the story and role play.
After being burned by SWG:Jedi (or NGE as some call it) I have to wonder if there is any other class available other than Jedi? I understand they make more sense during the Old Republic but I am really hoping there will be other playable classes... jedi bore me. The real good stuff from the Star Wars universe is the non-jedi action... smugglers begging spaceships in card games, generals leading troops into battle, frantic space fighting...
The jedi (to me) have always represented an ultimate power that should not be playable by gamers.

I have too agree on that... if this is JUST a JEDI game... it will not do so well i think... from jedi healers too jedi masters too jedi fighters and jedi pilots ect... Wont be bad but wont hit its potential... Look at even the movies... han solo, chubaca ect..... there all non jedi and yet they Rocked... lol and in SWG... Jedi was Great but it was alot of fun playing the others like smugglers ect.... and when they killed off the jedi in SWG then the game REALLY because about star wars and not jedis lol... well i guess we will see.
It's funny how we are all jumping to conclusions on a game that was only announced such a short while ago. Personally I am not going to believe anything until they tell me otherwise.
Also adding to the discussion on sandboxes. I believe what has been missing from sandbox games is a good story.
What I took from this interview is that they are not saying there are so many quests we have the choice of which ones to do, what I am taking from this is that they'll be a number of ways to complete the quest.
i.e. You are trying to get info off of someone but he won't tell you into you complete a set of quests. You have the option to listen and follow the quests, talk him into telling you without completing the quests, threaten him and risk not getting the information entirely, or kill him and try and figure it out on your own (maybe he has a note on him that'll lead you to your next clue, or maybe if you ransack his house you'll find something useful).
It would be great if you could gain experience in different fields: persuasion (good trait) , intimidation (evil trait) which would then determine how they might respond.
and what is great is that this would differ from games like Fallout 3 because you can't restart from a previous save and try again.
I think it would be great to have huge story arcs where the entire server can decide which direction the story goes based on how they react to different events thrown their way.
Obviously I am just making this up, but it would be great if they could find add the story telling elements of games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout to an MMO. I think it could only add to the sandbox feel of a game.
I have too agree on that... if this is JUST a JEDI game... it will not do so well i think... from jedi healers too jedi masters too jedi fighters and jedi pilots ect... It's obvious you haven't been following the game then.. they've said in interviews that there will be other classes. Not everyone in the Republic will be trained at the Jedi temples, not everyone in the Empire will be trained as a Sith. They said any "heroic" type of character from the SW movies will probably be available as a class. They also talked about how Jedis could be killed just as easily by non-Sith and vice versa, so there will be balance.
So, not just Jedi vs Sith, but those are the core of KOTOR. They've most likely worked on those two the most, enough to get some nice pre alpha footage out.
Patience.. the game is still being DESIGNED. They haven't even revealed any other class yet.
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
Ok the video presentation is one big joke. Are we customers really that stupid?
"The game is BIG, it's the biggest project ever did by.... .... bioware" That's really surprising when they never did a mmo before.
"The combination of Bioware and Lucas Arts is the best thing for SW" Yes we all wanted to hear that.
"There's more characters than in any other .... star wars game made by Bioware" Again very surprising. In addition who the hell cares about some silly fictional characters. I want good gameplay, and not thousands of characters with boring scripted dialogues.
"Every decision will matter, every decision will make a difference blabla" Really who cares, I want a good gameplay, It's more a hassle than a good system if instead of being able to explore everything, the locations will be just closed because I said no in some stupid dialogue. Seriously, rpg's were never about story decisions and this black and white good vs evil reputation system. Look at Troika, they did it right with their aligment system. Lot's of choices not just "Good path: Ok, I will help you", or "Evil path: I am gonna rip your head off and your mother's too" ..Bioware wake up and hire back the guys that worked on Baldur's Gate 1 your only good RPG.
When you get down to it, this will be just a jedi theme park game. Some people will love it, some not. What it will not be is anything like the original SWG.
If you have any notions this will challenge Wow I think you will be disappointed. People are just tired of the various theme park venues. The game that challenges Wow won't be a theme park.

True statement by Ozmodan, this will not be anything like the original SWG. So the diehard sandbox fans will be disappointed. That still does not mean that this game will not be successful just because it will not be a sandbox. Jedi themed ? Most likely because the time in which the game is set in is thousands of years before Darth Vader. It's about the war between jedi vs sith so it only fitting that people can become jedi or sith from the very start.
Challenge WOW ? Probably not because WOW is getting old and about time this game releases WOW will be atleast 2 years older which noone will care by then. Heck, some people don't even care now because alot already have finished WOTLK.
Story and decisions mattering has been done before, but only in very small and very rare doses.
For instance ,in PotBS there was a quest in which the player had to deal with and convince npc factions to support a mission he was about to undertake. It was dialogue heavy and what you picked to say, helped the npcs decide if they were going to support your mission or not.
Supporting meant they showed up in their ships and fought alongside you.
Not supporting meant they didnt.
So your choices in the dialogue tree decided if 0-4 allies helped you in the coming mission.
This was a small example, and done fairly well.A MMO with ton of these, done also well, would be a welcome step in the right direction for MMOs.
Bioware has the ability, but all the MMO dev refuges theyve taken in to help them make their MMO havent shown themselves to be adept at very much,so as far as im concerned its a very open question right now whether or not they can get this right....
If these developers had any idea what was wanted by true gamers, they would create a sandbox MMO.
its to bad they like to make alot of money, which they will make more of if they dont make a niche sandbox game.
that's not necessarily true. "sandbox" isnt really a niche genre anyways, not even really a genre. (although practically extinct today).
it's fucking star wars. they'd make plenty of money either way. this game was so close to actually being enjoyable by everyone. it's an IP everyone loves, from hardcore players to wow-masturbators. it could have brought balance to the fucked up MMO market.
instead they're reskinning. why do these developers put so many boundaries. i'm going to give this game more time, but right now it barely even sounds like an MMO.
I can't believe people are STILL complaining about Jedi/Sith as a starting class lol!. Did people not notice the title of the game? It's a MMO based in the Old Republic era when Jedi and Sith are in constant conflict. This isn't SWG2. Jedi/Sith are not near extinction. Jedi/Sith will not be the only class. There will be 8 classes. The other classes are not released yet but the main page of the TOR site states there will be other "classic Star Wars roles." Most likely they will have trooper, smuggler, bounty hunter, etc... A lot of people are already speculating the Kel Dor in the video is a bounty hunter due to his wrist mounted flamethrower.

I never even doubt it will not be superb game. But there is just so much crap surrounding it

But seeing this in MMO is awesome

its to bad they like to make alot of money, which they will make more of if they dont make a niche sandbox game.
that's not necessarily true.
