First off I want to say that I've followed Darfall for about two years now. I haven't been obsessive about it but I have kept my eye on the website and other places to get updates etc. What I don't understand about some people on this forum is the genuine desire for this game to fail. I've never seen that kind of passion for a game to crumble, ever. I don't want to spark another argument about the game but I'll just say I want to the game to do well. It will release, that much I know but how the game will play and if it will succeed is still a concern on mine, hopefully it will do well.
On to my question.. I've read that there won't be any type of recall spell, let me correct myself, there will be a recall type spell but it takes a very long time to cast and the devices you use to teleport to a location will be lootable and very expensive.
This is somewhat of a concern of mine. With a world that is going to be very large I think that instant travel would really help out in several ways. Maybe you want to hit up a certain guild or player housing location but it's going to take you all night to get there. You want to run through several hot spots for Pk's but it will end up being so much travel it wouldn't even be worth it. Organization of raid parties or pvp groups could end up being a huge problem and how are you going to get back to your guildtown or house? You understand what I am worried about?
I think that there should be some sort of "gate" spell that is easily castable. Not in the sense that you could use it to escape pvp or escape from anything really. Maybe something like a 2 min cast timer? Then you could have the whatever you need to teleport to certain locations cost money, it would certainly hurt to lose it but not so outrageous that you would never carry it with you...
With that being said, what kind of travel is currently being emplemented into the game? I am atleast assuming that you can hope on a horse or walk through a gate to travel between major locations/cities?

Taken from a post on the Darkfall forums "The devs don`t want players teleporting here there and everywhere, they want you to travel. This is why they are making instant travel expensive." As for more information on travel overall check this thread out: Fast Travel System or just Mounts?

For the purposes of "adventuring" it's ok but you are going to end up with scenarios where you might have to walk or run for a half hour to get to a rival guilds town. That can get very frustrating very quickly.
I'm just worried there won't be a way for us to organize and travel might end up being a huge time sink. I'm all for hardcore but there should be limits on it. When you are spending most of your time in the game traveling that can becomg an issue. I"m confident that if it does become a big issue that they will patch it accordingly but it's just one of my many concerns for the game.
Still optimistic about the game!

I can understand your concern. Myself coming from UO, I was able to recall here and there whenever needed. Sure it was convenient, but if you think about it kinda ruins the game. Like you said though, if travel becomes a big problem im sure the Dev would look into it.
I despise instant travel mechanics for pure convenience for lazy ADD kiddies. I look forward to a game that is realistic about travel. You can get mounts which seems sufficient to me. I think a magic porting or recall spell is ok as long as they stick to keeping it somewhat prohibitive by making it costly and allowing the items necessary to create the spell lootable as described.
In a FFA lootable PvP world, the last thing you want is for clans or groups of friends to be able to travel quickly from one spot to the next because I plan on doing quite a bit of soloing and the things that will help me survive are the vastness of the world and lengthy travel times.

There are things to do around YOU, you know, the long travel times thing is done for immersion and realism. Like getting reagents, you have to go and find each one instead of go to a store and buy them all like in WoW, it adds realism (however real magic can get).
However, for the sake of community, there are ways to teleport, but the teleport locations are few and far between, and thus you will need to manually go to 60% of the places that you need to go to. There are gateways of interconnected dungeons, but going there is very risky they are hotspots of pvp activity (it is said they are set up like fps maps)

Good post from anothers prescpective.
Thanks for responses guys they were all good.
Apparently the game world is so big that it would take you days to cross on foot.
Dont forget this is a sandbox game. You dont have to travel anywhere if you dont want to. The game it self wont force you to cross the world. Its up to you.
So if you want to cross the world, find someothers that also want it, and be of. Right there you will have many days of adventure. And noone will know how it will end. You might end p in a army fighting a war, finding a mine, or make 35 new friends and emies : )
An instand teleport spell would truly ruin DF. It might be fun in WoW, where you have to travel all the time. But not in DF..
source?
I've only heard 8 hours.
I also like long travel times.. but I also like AC's portal system. If you've never seen it.. it's really cool. Not like WoW's portal system. In AC you head to learn how to get around, the world was so big, compared to .. well.. AoC I guess.. I mean, Vanguard was ruined by instant travel (for a game that was supposed to be all about immersion..)

I would prefer limited instant travel.
I really like the way EQ did it in the early days with certain classes being able to port. Yes i know there are no classes in Darkfall but actually there are. You could give the porting skill to one or two of the "I forgot what they are called but they are classes" that you can become later in the game. This would really limit istant travel in the beginning because no one would meet the criteria for making one of the upper classes yet.
The books ruined EQ so instant travel that is easy to find all the time i am not a fan of.
You could even limit it a little for what i stated before, like you actually have to have been do the location you are wanted to go before and perhaps pick up a "X" that will atune you to that location. Then you can be ported there. And yes, those items could and should be lootable, however the looter still cant port there until he visits the locations. Kind of a double flag system.
