Of course you have NO/ZERO/NADA screenshots to support your CLAIMS... What a joke. We all know SWG is dead. We've all logged on for the past 3 years to look at the corpse.
WTF? How many posts on this website require a screenshot to support a claim of having fun? Seriously, you seem to have issues.
NO! Fun in SWG is impossible. If you encounter more than 3 people in your daily gaming experience, you are required to provide a screenshot, or else you are lying. These are the rules of the MMORPG.com SWG boards.
We all know you have more fun on these boards than in the NGE.
All MMOs experience an increase in traffic during this time of the year because of school hollidays.
Once January hits people will realise very few bothered to return to SWG to transfer their character and that the influx of players from ghost servers are insignificant.
Not far from then SOE will likely pull the plug on half of the servers.

it's easy to spin it that way.
But, the reality is that people DO play this game and starsider is one of the highest population servers with an average of 600+ players (based on my own use of the group search tool over the span of seven days two weeks ago).
It is a service that SOE provides to their players that dont want to play on a dead server. We know NGE killed the population and we know that attrition over 5 years also takes toll. At least the players now can transfer to a populated server without having to pay. I would guess that this will take the high population servers (Bloodfin, chilastra, bria, starsider, ahazi) to well over 1000+ active players. That's more than enough

I agree that this move by SOE can only be a positive to the remaining SWG community.
How much so, only time will tell.
I just wouldn't be too eager to celebrate just yet.
Alot of people ar creating placeholder toons on the servers to check out the server for a move. So there is increased activity based on that. Right now Bria is at heavy population, 6 other servers are on medium population, and 2 are on light pop, the rest are on very light.

I think you may be right to some degree. I know my old server is one of the ones that is eligable for a free transfer off and that many people that are still there are checking things out on other servers. Some of them are trying to organize as many people as they can to all move to the same server.

Restuss has been active since introduction. It is the PvP zone of SWG . These shots make it look empty compared to what I played 2 years ago. (In Restuss).
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Starsider was a hot bed of activeity today and I think the server transfers in the near future played a part in that. I saw hundreds of people all day long and it had to be one of the most active days since the NGE was forced upon us. I pvp'ed, ran instances and crafted special orders today. Must say I had a very star-warsy day in my sandbox !!! Now a forcast Citys will be over thrown and conquerd by those moving over and takening charge. I know of two citys that new owner ship shall emerge. Glorius!

lol, there are about 70 people in that shot ** based on kill count - some toons had cloned ..this was .25% way into the battle
two years ago, at least on chilastra, it was pretty similar. Only difference is that you dont have the carebear jedi camping EH for the jinzu hilt

Uhm, No. That shot does not come close to 70 from what I can see. No offense, 10 red != 70. The screenshot != Last night.
Free sever transfers != a increasing population.

Keep in mind that enemy NPCs also show up as red dots, so 10 red dots don't necessarily equal 10 players either.

The real issue is in the fact that you people need to come to this site and lie to all of us about populations so we waste our money subscribing for a month to a dead game.
Well don't waste your time and money by resubbing. Simple.
He never said "Omg come and re-sub now", to me it just seemed he was happy about a few more people running around on a server.
Oh and I would reccommend that before we take anymore your posts seriously, you supply us of a screenshot of you with your 'serious face' on. Just so we know you're not jacking us around.
Naw he doesn't need a SS , I've log'd on to Starsider and it was full of people . Same for Bria , Scylla my home server , now thats a dead server , I had a hard time finding a Hoth team on Bloodfin as well.
I re-subbed to the game nearly 2 weeks ago now after roughly 2 years away from SWG. I know it's been about 2 years as the last bounty i collected was in 2006.. guess what!!!! Kauri has on average 50 - 70 people a day online, i'd say thats pretty close to dead but guess what, 80% of them are moving to Chimaera with the remaining 20% going to starsider (rough calculations but close enough as i've spoke to those online on Kauri).. Chimaera is one of the highest population servers if not the highest with Starsider being a close second battling for top.. i don't know how some of you define "dead" but those 2 servers have the population of the old days.. you don't believe us? you want proof of this? i say stuff ya then, if you can't be bothered to check out the free time you've been given from time to time then i say i can't be bothered doing screenshots for you. You don't want to believe the game still has some active and worthwhile servers? fair enough thats your right but don't say the game is dead when you haven't tried it recently.. oh and before you haters start calling me a fanboi or whatever get this into your skulls, i was one of you till recently, saying the game was dead and dying, i actually got off my ass and checked things out though..
With regards to gameplay it's not too bad these days, if they bring back decay and give crafters the ability to make the best equipment again then i'd say thats all thats needed now.. i spent a lot of money replacing or repairing items each week but decay is still a must have for crafters to be worthwhile. When it comes to complexity SWG is still the most complex game on the market (excluding EVE as thats not an MMORPG in my opinion).
@angry vets : Check the game out or don't, no one cares as long as you quit complaining and spewing crap when you haven't even checked things out properly or don't provide screenshots to show this dead game as you call it yet ask for proof that it's still going.
@current players : Hope your all enjoying the game and i hope to catch you around in it.
edit : yes i am in a foul mood and can't be bothered being nice as i'm getting tired of the vets myself now even though i was once one of them.

While I agree with you that theres some active servers that have healthy populations, the game as a whole is not healthy population wise. When a game offers free transfers off half of its servers with the very real possibility that those servers will eventually be closed, thats far from healthy. Still, swg isn't as dead as some of the "vets" say. I'd guess theres probably around 20k or so active players (not accounts) at most these days, based on how active the current servers are and server capacity (technicaly speaking, the hardware can only allow for so many people per server).

My friends who also came back to the game don't agree with me but personally i think it's a way for them to save money in the long run and keep the game going longer in hopes to bring more players back or get new players.. currently only a select few servers have the populations required for the game to be fun, by consolidating all their players onto fewer servers (half the servers in this case) it means that they can eventually think of releasing/closing the empty servers knowing that the smart players will use this free transfer to their advantage by moving servers. This in turn will mean less outgoings on the number of servers they have to maintain which will increase their profits and help them keep the populated servers going. If one day the servers reach maximum that are still running at that time then i reccon they'll increase the number of servers as and when needed or just get better equipment able to increase server population maximum.
Well let's see here. SOE has a masterplan of bringing in new players and bringing back old players but the populations have been on a pretty steady decline since the NGE went live...
So how is tha working out again?
There aren't bustling new cities and servers full of fresh, new players. It's 3 or 4 servers that everyone in the empty servers is transferring to.
You are just kidding yourself to think that SOE and LucasArts are going to suddenly care about SWG and start REALLY trying to fix the core issues of the game, which by the way, they can't without a major overhaul, which isn't going to happen with a new Star Wars MMO ready to take this ones place.
So you can hate on the "veterans" all you want but the fact is that most of us who talk about how we don't appreciate people lying about the state of the game and populations HAVE played the game over the course of the past 3 years and we can make a very solid determination for ourselves.
You say you haven't played until now since the NGE... Well most of us have played off and on throughout and I will tell you without a doubt there are less players now than there were 2 years ago.
SOE has always had very poor mareketing for SWG. . . i think they had one idea to bring in new people and it backfired miserably.
SWG's population fluxuates but remains pretty steady. There are A LOT of NGE-Era players though that know nothing about the game pre-NGE so they get *some* new players.
The jury is still out on what will happen after SW:TOR. It could either decimate the population or drive people back to SWG if TOR doesnt offer what they're looking for in a game.
who knows? Not I.

Tecmo Bowl.
It could either decimate the population or drive people back to SWG if TOR doesnt offer what they're looking for in a game.
who knows? Not I.

They called it the NGE and if for sure backfired. It is now an acadmeic case study of how NOT run a MMO.

It does not need to be "video game management".
As in any other industry, there are critical management issues here, as well as marketing and customer service.
