Anyone who buys this game the first week is proving PT Barnum accurate.
I'm a fan of Darkfall, anyone can see that from my post history, but I still advise everyone to take a good look at what this guy is saying here. Do NOT buy Darkfall (or any other game for that matter), before you are 100% sure that it is what they promise it to be.
For me it's not because of the money, but because the more game developers are let to get away with this shit, the more of it we will see in the future. AoC is a perfect example, it made huge amounts of money just from box sales alone and all those people who bought into the hype, were actually paying to play beta (Edit: actually it was more like alpha). That makes me sick.
If Darkfall is half-finished when they launch, I wont buy it. And I've waited DF longer than I'm willing to admit.
First of all you cant comepare aventurine with any developer out there in the entire history of mmo's.
They are comepletely different in there approach.
O.K. So, then what can we compare them to? When it's their first game we don't have much else to go on. History has shown us that those that rush out and buy MMOs get burnt more often than not.
I still dont know much how game will be but one thing is clear to me its real and its comming.
Tasos says it's Feature Complete... but that's the problem, what does that mean? Everyone is going to have a different interpretation of what that means. Without an official list of what those Features are... it doesn't really mean very much.
And after all the years ive followed Darkfall sinds 2002 ill buy game as soon as its avaible if it fails well bad luck.
If DarkFall turns out to be a flop... it's not bad luck for you. It means that you didn't learn from the history of other MMOs that have shown that to be the case more times than not.
Hopefully, DarkFall will be able to follow through with their Free Trial. That way at least everyone will know what they are buying.
But im convinced that game will not fail becouse its half finished or very bugged or unstable servers.
No i think it go into history as first mmo thats almost 100% finished and bug free at launch with stable servers.
I will settle for a launch, with the polish and stability that LoTRo had. It was by no means perfect, but it was what we should expect as a minimum from all MMOs on how a MMO should be when it launches.
Im just unclear on how it will play thats all, but its very finished game im sure:)
That first part is what we are hoping changes real soon... "unclear on how it will play"
Come on OPEN Beta with 10k+ people all logged in at the same time! If we aren't crashing the servers... then something went wrong.

I hate to admit it, but I believe this is the real reason behind the scens of why MMO Companies have a NDA set up..
Rallithon Oakthornn (Retired Heirophant of the 60th season)
Do you think competitors to DarkFall can implement that kind of content in under 5 weeks into their own MMO?
Yes
Do you happen to have any examples of such a quick-turn-around happening in the past that would give creedence to your opinion?
Not to doubt you... but you are the only one allowed to openly say that they are in the Beta... and nobody (including the mods) seems to think that it's an NDA violation.
I'm a fan of Darkfall and eagerly await its release. However those that point out the worriesome details of Adventurines lack of communication and possibly no open beta... well they have a point. I hope we dont' get Funcomed.
I know Aventurine will most likely release Darkfall and it will be good, but this man says it best... A lot of us remember AoC and how we all expected that game to be awesome but it failed hard. Warhammer a year ago was a completely different game then what actually hit store shelves. MMOs lately besides WoW have pretty much put out semi complete products it's just unfortunate WoW is just that, WoW.
The more close to Jan 22nd it gets and when NDA is not dropping people will avoid the game like the plague until valid non-biased reviews and people who attempted to try the game even though it was in the dark talk about it will it sell copies or not. With all the trolls that have existed to try and destroy this game's name I can see people pretending to hate it just because they find it funny for some reason.
The NA release being after the UK also might have the potential to let possible NA costumers that wouldn't of got the game on release day to go out and buy it boosting sales also. Just some food for thought.
All I'm saying is, they'll make money to keep the game alive, but I really would like to see Darkfall become successful so more companies steer away from theme park style games and people start to explore all the possibilities of allowing people freedom to do what they want.

Well said.
I think that's the point that many of us are trying to get across. We keep getting contradictory signals from Aventurine and Tasos about DarkFall. A couple of examples:
Tasos tells us when Closed Beta starts that he hopes we ALL make it into Beta. Since this statement was made on the official forums, and it's been hammered home again and again how it has 200k+ people signed up that would seem to indicate the intention of inviting in massive numbers of Closed Beta participants.
Yet, in reality even the biggest supporters will say it's around 300. So, in over a months time of actively sending out invites they've only been able to get 300ish players into the Closed Beta? Something there doesn't mesh with Tasos' statement before of wanting to get us ALL in Beta.
Tasos has also said that DarkFall is already Feature Complete and it could launch today.
Yet, even in it's "Complete" and "Ready" state there is no update of the OPEN Beta and the NDA is still firmly in place. So again, we are left to wonder why the seemingly contradictory positions.
Another statement Tasos made was about the media, marketing, advertising, etc. I don't remember the exact wording (and I don't feel like looking it up at the moment) but, it was something to the extent of there being more of it as they got closer to Release.
Now yes, we've had the 2 Italians with their Beta "Pre-review" and we've had "The Noob" Beta Pre-review. I didn't care much for the Italian's stuff, but "The Noob" has done a pretty good job with what she has been able to tell us. It's been the most information we've ever been allowed to know.
For me, I'm hoping that isn't the extent of the "media blitz". I'm hoping there is going to be more up-coming, as that will be a bit under-whelming if that's the extent of it.
Anyway, I think it's safe to say that those on both sides of the issue just want them to Release the game on Jan. 22nd in a Complete and Stable condition. (Only 35 days to go!)
I think it's to a bit of both really, to stop competitors seeing too much of games features and also to stop people talking about the game in a bad light when it's unfinished. I saw some imbecile complaining that damage numbers hadn't been rounded off in one beta, you would get total morons complaining about things like that all over the internet if there was no NDA.
Whats the purpose of the NDA? We just saw it in action.
It prevents sites like this to host leaked material on thier website. NDA is not going deter average joe who would be immpossible to letigate, but it is enough to deter a for-profit website that doesn't want any lawsuits.
Main purpose to keep any trade secrets out rivals hands, as well as giving rivals ability to capitalize on any mistakes they are making. Example: WAR talked about siege weapons and massive keep and control battles. WoW introduced massive siege battles and keep and control battles.
You know DAOC had sieges too right? Trade secrets implies something that competitors do not have and can't replicate without the "trade secret" information. Like the recipe for Coca Cola. Something that has been out for years like keep sieges is not a trade secret. At any rate, something that you publicly talk about like keep sieges (ala WAR PR) isn't a reason for an NDA. Nice try.
I think that NDA's for games are mostly used to protect the progress of the game, how it plays, etc. Considering they publicly disclose most game features while in development in order to stir up interest an NDA doesn't protect those very well. It just protects the status of said features.
To the OP, it seems like the NDA is up to protect the current progress, or lack thereof, of the game.

Thanks for the discussion.
It's been interesting to get everyone's opinion on NDA's and their use.
For DarkFall it looks like most are of the opinion that they should at a minimum drop the NDA 2 weeks before Release.
I'd like to see it drop today, or at least sometime in December. However, if they drop the NDA sometime in that first full week of January; that should be sufficient time for us to get information that we would like to know.
Obviously an OPEN Beta during that same time-period (or even sooner) would be good too.
This is for discussion... so let's try and keep the posts civil... Thanks!
What is your opinion of the purpose of an NDA for a MMO in development?
It is my opinion that the main purpose of an NDA is to keep information away from the MMO's competitors so that they can't release or update their game with the same Feature or mechanic before the MMO with the NDA has a chance to Release their game.
I'd be interesting in hearing other's opinions on what purpose an NDA serves.
With my opinion of what an NDA serves in mind, for me it brings up the question... What purpose does DarkFall have in keeping it's NDA intact with just 5 weeks until they release? Does Aventurine think that other MMO's will have the time to code, implement, test, and then release/update their MMO with the information released from DarkFall's NDA? I guess I can't think of any other reason why Aventurine would keep the NDA in place for DarkFall. That's why I decided to pose the question to everyone else here. Perhaps there is something that I am over-looking?
Just a case in point. AFAIK, Funcom has never lefted the NDA from AoC. Look at the quality of that game.
In my opinion, they just want to keep people hyped for as long as possible. They want them to still be itching for some of the content, and they don't want trolls that actually have played the game to drive away some weaker players. Thats what i feel Adventurine is doing with darkfall. Good luck with this game, I have a hope that it makes it somewhere. If you're loosing hope, just watch the trailer again
The purpose of a non-disclosure agreement, as it relates to game software development, is to affect marketing/PR/product placement. Protecting proprietary aspects of features and/or code from competitors is an afterthought when viewed against the hype machine (or in Darkfall's case, the avoidance of any real facts to feed said hype machine, make of that what you will).
This is for discussion... so let's try and keep the posts civil... Thanks!

Which should be a compelling reason that DarkFall would want to DROP their NDA as soon as possible then... right?
In my opinion, the longer an NDA stays up... the more it raises the questions of why.
I'm a fan of Darkfall and rooting for it to succeed, but clearly Aventurine doesn't want people looking closely at their game.
Why that is I can't say, but it doesn't take any time or manpower to drop an NDA and let people (i.e. fans) post screenshots and discussion on the web. Provided the game really does approximate what they've been claiming, this could only help their efforts.
The fact that they're clamping down so tightly on this means they have something to hide.

Heh, the NDA's I signed as part of Naval Intel are active for 80 years. I should have some great stories to tell when I am 107 years old. Can't wait.
LOL! 80 years... yikes!
I'm thinking that the consequences of breaking an NDA with the military MIGHT be a bit more severe than breaking an NDA for a vidoe game as well.
Although it does seem that Aventurine has some connections with certain countries known keeping people in line... so I could be wrong about that.

This is how one of instructors described the consequences of breaking the NDA:
"They send you to Kansas to learn about the relationship between very large rocks and very small rocks and all of the processes in between."

The fact that they're clamping down so tightly on this means they have something to hide.
ding ding ding!
