This couldn't possibly be farthur from the truth. If people thought that way we'd still be living as cave men. Thousands of things are invented DAILY and MMORPG's release that push the genre or expand it or mutate it all the time. To say that WoW is no different because theres nothing left to make it different.. is a crutch.
LOL I was merely using that quote to point out the obvious irony in some of the arguments against real innovation in this thread. Clearly, in that point in time (the late 1800s), such a shallow viewpoint made sense to some. I only wish some people here could look at the what's going on in the industry, and draw the same conclusions.
I read about half of the posts( really got fed up with long posts). I want just to give my opinion.
What really counts here is MONEY. Blizz do not make WoW so one hundred devoted MMORPG fans to say "This game is so original. I like it." They want big sales. I hope you all understand that big sales do not come with originality (at least it doesnt in the game industry). You have seen what Blizz do. Take the original ideas from other titles and polish them. That is what they are doing now and WoW will be very, very good game. But nothing new will be preasent. Just everything good from the MMORPG genre. (hope no one attacks me now) What i said now is said mill of times, but i felt like saying it again.
"WoW seems to want to cater to the 15-18 yr old genre that only like to go beat on mobs to death..."
Whatever man! I'm 27 and I love beating mobs to death. Throw in a little story, a little magic and guess what, you got a rpg!
Anyway, I wanted to share an example of a quest that isn't just go kill mob A and bring the loot back to mob B, or deliver this package to mob C.
A NPC wanted me to go save his friend who was being held hostage. I was instructed to collect 4 moonstalker pelts (moonstalker=tiger) so that the NPC could create me a magical cloak. This cloak had one charge to change me into a moonstalker so I could sneak into the camp. So, I ran to the camp, put it on and activated it. The cool thing about this is, I actually turned into a moonstalker for 5 minutes. I found him, gave him the cloak to escape with and then used my recall stone to get back to town. Of course the NPCs were grateful and rewarded me with money and decent boots I think.
So, don't listen to those who havn't tried it yet. The quest system is a step in the right direction for MMORPGs.
