another 'I have played to L7..' post

And what have I learned, I hear you ask?

Well...

  • TCoS is pretty. Sure, it's clunky at times and the game world dosent feel at all full, even of NPCs, but it has a lovely art style and tons of atmosphere.
  • The character models are to my taste and are well enough animated. Having only two races tho, and a very limited set of intial armour choices, I stopped looking at other PCs in he game after about 30mins as they started to blur into each other.
  • The score is great, with a strong sountrack and good spot fx. This really adds to immersion.
  • The combat is clever, skilled, and pretty much everything AoC should have been.
  • Death is meaningful as you lose PeP, which does actually seem to count.  This is a good thing.

but...

  • 90% of my quests/ mobs so far have been solo, and I hate that. This may well change in the upper lvls, but groups should be encouraged (not 'forced' you will notice) from day 1 imo to encourage the mindset for later lvls.
  • The classes, I have tried 3, are (at least at this level) seem pretty bland and generic. This of course may well change as you progress.
  • The quests are meh. Nothing great, but nothing terrible. Average fed-ex, kill 10 wolves and whatnot.
  • The drop loot feels like junk. I get coin for selling it, sure, but I hate that system. I would much much rather take my chance with random drops off a loot table then this 'everyone is special' system where everyone ends up the same with shop purchased items and quest rewards. I hope this changes, 'cause right now there dosent seem to be any 'wow factor' when it comes to loot. It just feels like I am harvesting animal parts to sell.
  • Not a lot of peeps seem to be playing right now, and the game feels like a single player RPG to me... this is especially worrying tbh, but I am hoping that the NA version (where I will be switching to) will be more busy and vibrant. Akklaim are not filling me with hope at this time though tbh.

Listen, to cut it short, TCoS right now seems a cracking PvE/ PvP lite game that is imaginative and brave enough in it's choices to make it feel different. It has fast, fluid skill based combat and is, imo, waay more polished feeling then WAR or AoC were at release. In fact, to me, it leaves both those 'AAA' titles in the dust right through. It is running very nicely maxed out on my machine.

It's a shame that it dosent look like TCoS will get the player base of those games, but it goes to show that no matter how much people b*tch and complain about the state of the genre, they still only all flock to where the known IPs and massive hype machines tell them to. I have a gut feeling that TCoS will only be up for about a year at this rate... I hope thats wrong, but with the utter lack of promotion it is getting right now anywhere I cannot see it penetrating the market to any great lvl. It deserves better.

Give it a go, it's free to try, and it may be the game you are looking for.

No, it shows the mismanagement of TCoS.

The splitting up of territories in ridiculous ways for the publishing, the utter lack of interest on Acclaims' part to get the NA version out, the fact that most people have been bitten by the "trial levels are polished" without any indicator of the rest of the game ( like AoC and WAR ) so they are not going to just shell out money for something until reviews by paid subscribers who have hit 30-40-50 levels start coming out with some regularity.

ah but the beauty of this game is that once your level 7.99 and you wanna get the full version you only have to pay your first months sub:) no paying 50 bucks

Maybe if they would release the game, or even let the NA/EU players play on the servers thats available now then the servers wouldnt be dead. I have no clue why they release a game in countries where the MMO market is not near as big, It just makes no sense to me. Al east let all of EU in. Id still feel shafted because I am NA....

As for the game not being hyped, no biggie if it is a good solid game word of mouth will get it going. The best part the WoWbies wont be jumping on the TCOS banwagan just to hop off off and turn Trollish when its not exactly like WoW. So low hype is a GOOD thing IMO.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

    Favorite MMO: FFXI

I just wanted to post a similar thing, but since this is already here I'll tag along.

Basicaly what OP said. Combat system is everything AOC should have been. Its fast and fluid and takes some practice to handle but grows onto you rather fast. It is also the first system that effectively does away with the skill bar and does it very good. The rotating bar you have could pretty much be described as planning how you are going to execute series of skills stringing them together to your liking.

The world is beautiful and has an unique style which I like very much. Very lush and cosy.

I was surprised that at for example at level 2, you need alot of effort to fight level 2 bears for example. You need to evade alot run back, arround while you are executing skills and even then it takes half of your HP to kill them. In a classical MMO combat system that would be terrible and mind numbing, but with the activity this system provides it is rather interesting battling it out. Maybe that changes later when you get more powerful skills, but I feel really good about it as you don't just go in there and whack a mob with 2 skills and kill it. For me it is a very positive point. After a long time I found a game where every time you leave the main road, you feel like entering a dangerous teritory.

Musical score and sound scape is simply amaying and adds tons to the atmosphere of the game.

Quests are mostly kill and collect, but I must say that if you read the texts they rather interesting and sometimes even intriguing (like the traveling merchant and the smuggler on the docks. I like the part where you have to verbaly by picking responses in dialogue get him to tell you more than he wants, or the one where the mean sister stole a doll from her kid brother, tore it apart and left a riddle where the parts are - in essence it is kill and collect etc, but it is the way they are delivered to you that is in my opinnion better).

I really hope they do not overextend themselves and realise that they have a fabulous little game here and go the EVE way of slowly building the playerbase and expand the game instead of trying to be a game for everyone.

I can also agree that if this game fails, it shows that the majority of MMO gamers keep bitching and moaning all the time and then flock back to big IPs that serve them the same dish over and over.

I also fear that Acclaim will drop the ball and screw it up because it doesnt feel like they have any interest in the game. I whish really that devs went the CCP way and self-published it, but maybe they did not have enough money for it.

Overall, after trying all the big IP names that came out this yerar, I think this game is a diamond in a poile of rubble. It is certanly visible that it was built with alot of love and dedication and I really whish they can secure enough subs to survive and prosper.

I tried TCoS yesterday for the first time too.  I agree with most of your points except my overall opinion overall isn't as positive, I'm really on the fence so far.

Character creation was better then the vast majority of MMORPG's out right now.  They should add more options in some categories but they're off to a very good start.

Music and graphics are good but that's really low on my list of what makes a good game.

The first class I played was a Void Seer, it felt strange (in a good way) to be meleeing as a caster class.  Does this continue into the high levels?

The skill deck was fun to mess around with but how long is that gimmick going to stay interesting.

I'm thoroughly bored of the standard "Kill 10 wolves", "Deliver this note" quests, at this point I would rather grind mobs endlessly.

Killing mobs was pretty easy, even two mobs at once wasn't all that hard.  When I ran into trouble it was easy to run away.  Some mobs have a large aggro radius so expect adds more often.  Training mobs on people / having mobs trained on you was possible, whether people think this is good or not is another story.

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.”

I see the game a bit different. I was there when WOW/EQ2/VG/AOC blah blah launch and this game is no where near that.

It looks nice the combat is .. for me childish at best. You have to run back and forth, all around just hoping the target does not turn as fast as you and thats not combat. If you love quests like kill 7, kill 10, kill 5 blah blah you will LOVE this game.

It should be free to play forever. Its the classic OLD mmo. 90% of all NPC are just standing there. You would think by now there would be tons of people playing but .. its just not fun. You will find yourself going back to the same NPC many times as you lvl up for quests.

But from the looks of it this game will not last very long. EQ and DAOC are more fun than this and have more people..

But try it its free for a few levels.... maybe $5 is what they should charge..

LOL. Seriously..... seeing how dead the current 6 servers are..... I think they already went back. Or better yet..... never came at all.

    Cheers

They did the wrong thing , we know. But telling others that the game sucks is false. The combat system is really innovative and not childish lol... WoW combat is the simplest and the most childish .

If you don't like the game stop trolling about it and go back 2 wow or aoc or whatever you play .
