So about a year ago, I built this computer. Ever since a couple months ago, I get a blue screen of death. When the computer crashes, it says, "Attempt to reset display drivers and timeout failed" then it does a Physical memory dump.
I have gotten newer drivers many times, and it does not help. The computer will get this BSOD at completely random times, Sometimes after a week, sometimes after a day. Sometimes it happens when im playing games and sometimes it doesnt. I know the comp is not overheating. The processor and gfx card are at 32 celcius and 27 celcius at most times.
Also, Today for the first time the BSOD said 'A messacary process has been aborted" or something along those lines in the BSOD. When windows restarted after that BSOD it did a disk check, but it did not find anything wrong. Do any of you have any bright ideas as to what is happening?

Have you done a windows re-install?
Could be corrupted Windows files.
Virus checked your complete system?
Personally if it was my machine, i would format reload the OS, if its still happening, sounds to be a hardware issue, time to play the pul it out and plug things in 1 at a time game to find the culprit.
Cheers and good luck

This is a common problem with both ATi & Nvidia drivers under Windows Vista that has been around for a long time now. At the moment there is no permanent solution as it is a very difficult problem to track down with thousands of PC's hitting the bug in thousands of different places and running thousands of different applications. An application that one PC runs perfectly will cause another PC to crash constantly etc.
There is however a couple of things that you can do. First of all find which driver version is most stable on your PC, it should be the latest one but that isn't always the case so try a few until you find the best one. When you have the driver you want go into the control panel and remove the video driver using the uninstall a program option, restart the PC but don't allow it to boot into windows, instead boot into safe mode. ( This is for Nvidia drivers ) When in safe mode perform a full file search for any NV4 files left on the system and delete them manually, also delete the old NVidia display driver file folders from your hard drive ( Do NOT delete any Nvidia drivers that are not associated with the display, chipset drivers etc. ). When you are satisfied that all residual files have been deleted install the new driver and allow the PC to reboot normally.
Next make sure that Windows is fully up to date as Microsoft released a few hot-fixes to help with this issue, if you have the latest service pack installed then you already have these fixes. Once all that is done perform the routine maintenance ( running anti-virus & anti-spyware scans, running a good registry cleaner and defragging the hard drive) Restart the PC and give it a go. Hope this helps.
You can also search through the various technical forums out there for other steps to take.
I have done a v irus scan, there are no viruses.
Edit - Sorry. Your post wasnt there eric when I started typing mine.

Well, to me it sounds like a DDR memory has died, just a byte of it. So whenever the computer try to use it, it bluescreens. Not uncommon actually.
Fortunatley it is easy to check if this is the problem. Memtest 86 is a free program, burn it to a bootable image and boot up the computer with it, leave it running for an hour or so and if it finds errors then there is a broken memory.
Next is to find which memory that is broken, RAM, cash or on the GFX card but let's first see if that indeed is the problem. www.memtest86.com/ It is free.
It is also possible that either windows have been corrupted or that a driver isn't working properly. Run memtest and we will find out, I allways run this program when I build a computer, I have learned the hard way that it is not a uncommon problem.
Good luck.
if vista is your problem might i suggest server 2008? it is built upon vista kernel yet has little of the problems vista has. i have been using it for several months and no crashes. it is a free trial download from microsoft that lasts 240 days and then you just re-install it. most people who tinker with pcs wipe and re-install before then anyway. also free dx10.

you do have some tweaking you can do to make the server run more desktop-like.
