The Mines of Moria peak my interest as well as I just watched The Fellowship and it made me realize how good this game was/is.
Would it be hard to get back into it? I think I got to about lvl 35 or 40 and had to solo most of it - are there clans/guilds out there that will accept a returning member?
Worth it or should I look into getting a new system and look at a different game?

Now is a great time to get back in. Agmar has been revampe, Foreschel is in (a new mid to high 40s zone), and the Mines await once you hit 50. The expansion also seems to have attracted a lot of fresh blood.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
If you got to 35-40 and want to play that character - you may be in for a little dissapointment when you first log in - This level range is pretty thinly populated right now...
It seems most people are concentrating on mains (50 +) (The Mines of Moria are PACKED ) or leveling up new classes characters, mid 20's range is very populated as well...
Not saying you couldnt get a group between 35-40 , but it may be a little less crowded in these areas than in others.
BUT - The game is doing very well right now - new / old people continuing to start, great time to come back !
Unless you have a 50 waiting to go into Moria, the game is still as boring as it ever was. The Warden and Runekeeper were a disappointment. I should have known never to go back to this game, it just does not appeal to me. I won't make that mistake ever again.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
OP:
If you're interested in still getting back into the game, I play on the Silverlode server and there are still plenty of people playing the 1-50 part of this game. It has a lot of life left and is a great time to get back into the game. Wether you like to solo or group.
Remember: with LOTRO, it isn't about being the ubber high level elite with epic loot. Its about the adventure getting there and experiencing the story. Many people fall into the 'end-game' trap. Its hard not to. But remember, the end-game of LOTR is in Mordor and everything leading to that (may take time) is the real adventure. Don't rush it. Enjoy whats in-game. Have fun with friends and experience what LOTRO was designed to do - give you an opportunity to play in Tolkien's world.
My guild can help if you're willing to create a toon on our server. We're all pre-50 and are working through the content together.

Definatley now is a great time to come back -- the Moria content is a blast and in the last 6 months a lot of improvements have been made to the level 35 ro 50 grind. Lots of great storyline to get through as well!
I resubbed after a 7 month break and I am quite impressed with the expansion. After weeks and weeks in moria there are still many places I havent seen there. The place is gigantic!
The new classes are interesting even though I personally didnt like the Runie, but then again I rarely like caster types.
The legendary items system is really good. Its like artifacts in DaoC except that when you level them you decide how the develop, its not predetermined and you spend a lot of time developing adds to your items that will change their overall bonus. They are also linked to the highest level of crafting I am looking forward to try that out.
The expansion is also a mix of very good stories and a LOT of soloable content and then some REALLY difficult instances.
They changed the system a lot and that didnt go quite well. Some classes are really hurting with the changes likes the minstrel while the hunter is better than ever. Minstrels easily die to two blues while a hunter easily can face 3. I hope they will take a serious look at the minstrels. We need them!
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
You might add that the overall improvable content has expanded a lot. Months ago you could not improve your character beyone grind-traits and raid-items.
Now you can improve your character via faction, skill builds, items, (multiple!) legendary weapons, so for achievers theres a whole lot of new stuff to get busy with...
Plus while not adding anything fundamentally new to the game Turbine improved the popular concepts in every department.
- Environment is even better than in the original game. Moria is - in one word - epic and Lorien shows that they did not reuse any old textures/models but created new ones, new trees with new textures, new sound. And this is NOT normal, many games recolor old textures and resize old models for expansions just to add content.
- There are even more storydriven, soloable and small group quests in. Sure, the majority of solocontent is still "kill, explore, collect", but the overall quest quality has improved even more and consolidated its place among the best PvE experiences on the market.
- Downsides: Class imbalances, while they do not matter a lot in PvEm it's obvious that DPS classes, namely the hunter, have no problems striving through moria whereas support classes struggle a LOT, mainly because mobs get some badass buffs you can simply outdamage, but hardly outlast.
So yes, this expansion is a winner, with some things to be ironed out...

bah PVE based games are lame, everyone wants to solo, and everyone are on different quest. if you want to party play WAR.
