I decided that the graphics are OK to pretty good as it.
If STO was a FPS, I would expect them to use the latest graphics engine like CryEngine2 or Unreal 3.0, and that would be awesome.
But an MMO cannot have realistic graphics yet. So the graphics as they are, which are just as good as the leading MMOs out there, I accept.
Boy, it would be cool to have a new Star Trek FPS.

When was this game anounced? I swear a mate of mine was saying that he was going to get this game when it came out, I think it was 2004 or 2005.
We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.
Perpetual Entertainment, now defunct, announced Trek Online back in September 2004. The game then was put on the backburner for the next 3 to 4 years. Althoug Perpetual maintained it was in pre-development and kept in contact with fansites and did press interviews every few months, the game did not move out of pre-development under Perpetual's watch.
Perpetual was a very troubled company and went under in the end of 2007. The license for STO was told to Cryptic Studios in January 2008.
Cryptic took no code from Perpetual, and really has only used the concept art that was developed. So STO has been in development since January 2008 and is moving fast and geared for released in fall 2009 by Cryptic.
Cryptic plans to release expansions to STO that will include new factions and races and content.
The major controversy surrounding STO right now is player crews and authentication of Trek.
Whew! Did you read that everyone??? warrior41, aka Sameet (and god knows how many other aliases) has decided that the graphics are OK! IT'S NOT A MAJOR ISSUE, anymore!!
Rejoice! Sound the feasting horn!
If graphics were a big issue for MMOs, WOW wouldn't have 11million subscribers. It's a non issue. The most important quesiton to a person before he/she plunks down $15 a month is:Is the game fun?
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
I personally know quite a few families that play WoW (I don't have kids nor do I play WoW). Anyway its something they can do together and doesn't require a huge amount of money to outfit 3 to 4 machines.
That's one reason I always thought it was doing well in the US.
When I look at screenshots of this game, namely the space shots showing the ships etc, and then look at Eve online, it's so sad that cryptic made the decision they did to go with the less realistic look. Eve Online was released several years ago, yet it still looks good and they've even been able to update their engine since release.
I just don't get the artistic direction of STO.
so...
I'm not so sure how EVE's graphics are handled, but I always got the feeling that it's basically a scaled down world. I'm not sure how to explain what I mean to say, but I'll try. Essentially, every time I play EVE, I feel as if it could be almost the same sized world as some other open-world MMORPGs, just that I'm playing as...I don't know, a small toad on those worlds.
I am not an expert, just trying to think of an explanation as to why EVE's graphics are so impressive while being accessible, more so than some other high intensive graphical games (Age of Conan, for one).
Beside that, EVE puts you in play [as] a spaceship. I think that might also explain the difference in artistry. Star Trek is going to have you playing as a person, same as the majority of current MMORPGs. Personally, I would be happy to see every MMORPG of the next three years use graphics comparable to World of Warcraft. (It would mean I don't need to upgrade for three years! On both my desktop [and] laptop! )
starting to feel it's not looking like star trek anymore, but these are still alpha screens so it's possible this could improve or that it will end up as wow in space
I also think the graphics are fine. Some of the outer space shots look realy good.
I'm still not sure about the planetside shots however. The planet graphics could be better in my opinion.
although if u look at the vids they have some the best character anims i've seen in an mmo

i think eve's impressive graphics(and other space mmo's) are down to the fact that they don't have to render as many objects such as trees buildings etc aswell as not having the character animations to worry about
but if u compare some of the objects(asteroids etc) and ships in the newer sto screens there seem to be a bit of a gap in their rendering, possibly that the ships aren't finnished yet, hopefully not a change in the artistic direction
Unfortunately graphics are a major issue! There not the only major issue and I wish they weren't as big of a deal as they are but they are a massive issue. Even as a person who prefers solid gameplay to graphics I still cannot deny that good graphics make a game better. Still as I said I wish people didn't hold as much stock in them as they do but games with good graphics sell much better than games without them, making them a major issue.
Praise him! His crusade against the terable graphics ,which havn't changed senes the start, finally has yielded some results. Warrior41 aka Sameet shall be recorded into the annals of history. Praise our ST:O lord and savior.
