I have Crysis and C:W. Would you like me to reinstall them and make a video of me playing it? There's really no need to get cocky here. This is a POLL thread, meaning I am free to state my freaking opinions.
If you went on a Crysis forum, people would be like "so what if you beat the game? I got 35 FPS on max settings! owned!".

My "Other" vote goes to (step in your way-back machines) Castle Wolfenstein 3d. Nothing scarier than 16 bit zombies with swastikas... hitlers with dual gatling guns popping from around corners... or the digitized scream of "achtung" out of my pc speaker...
Many fine ones out now... but please... are any of those really "the best"??
I didnt vote cause there are so many great ones I cant decide.......
Half life 1 and Halo were groundbreakers to me... each amazed the hell out of me.
CoD2 was amazing... so was CoD4 but too short
BF2 is the best for online play
FarCry broke the mold in a great way... and Crysis and Farcry 2 took that new model to the next level.
Prey was unique and innovative... wasnt crazy about the storyline but the environments made up for it
There are a TON of great FPS's (talking about the single player experience, not online play). They are incredibly immersive and great fun... but unlike an MMO you only get a short period of gameplay out of it.

and PS, Crysis is a great FPS, just cause your system cant run it well dont be bitter toward those of us who were able to enjoy it =P.
And for the record I'm talking about the single player game, I've hardly played online at all (which is the case with most FPS games and me, when I play online I play battlefield or TF2).

Your missing the Game Of The Year on that list, Gears of War. And what about Quake 1-3, 3 being hands down my favorite. Or what about Counterstrike(pre-source), meaning beta versions. They were more fun than what counterstrike is today. You didn't even put down Wolfenstien, Unreal tournament, or any old skool shooters like Duke Nukem. This list seems like a list of the worse games Valve could put together. Either or, make a better poll next time. Your other category is very broad hence the reason its winning the poll.
For the love of God. WHY is CoD4, and even worse, CoD5, on that list but not CoD1 or 2? Is this a joke? CoD5 is such a horrific game it makes me cry to even think about how low games have fallen. And CoD4? Don't even get me started on that. I know people have their own opinions and standards, but that's all I'm going to say.
And so many people saying Crysis as the best FPS? I can tell I'm on an MMORPG forum.
Anyways, in my order.
1) UT2k4 (Why aren't any UTs on the list?)
2) CoD1
3) Rainbow Six 3 or Project Reality mod for BF2 (Can't decide)
UT2k4 is simply, in my opinion, the most challenging FPS out there. When a lot of people used to play it, 1v1 servers were up everywhere and people would wait in line for their turn to 1v1. It was fun just spectating to see the different play styles of people. UT2k4 made MOVEMENT just as important as extremely precise aiming. The game was very very fast and a lot of people simply couldn't handle it. It was the only FPS that I watched my skill gradually increase as I would take on harder and harder oponents. I had a blast just 1v1ing my friend all day and feel myself getting faster and more precise every day. Almost like I was leveling up. ;P
Edit: And like someone else said before, it sprang FPS's into a new level of deep competition. I loved it and feel sorry for anybody who didn't get to experience it. (For those who enjoy competitive gaming)
I voted for other even though my choice is a Battlefield game, but its different from the rest. This past year I got to beta test Battlefield Heroes and I gotta say in my own opinion. Its the best Battlefield or any other team map shooter ever. All the others seem like carbon copies of each other. Plus Battlefield Heroes doesn't take its self seriously, which makes it really fun to play.
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

Ya maybe that could be considered old school now-a-days. And is it not horrible that those great games are long gone? ;(
And UT2k4 is an FPS. It's first person, and you shoot. It's an FPS. And frag fest gonzo? Hardly. If you 1v1 some of the top players, you wouldn't kill them. Not once. Not at all. When I was starting out I went 1v1 with an extremely skilled player who has actually fought some of the top guys (he was a friend of a friend who played) and he beat me 30-0. There was almost no luck in UT2k4 1v1. Just pure skill. And I loved every bit of it. ;D
How could you say it's just a chaotic frag fest when every gun takes projection skills or precision aiming skills? The hitboxes were DEAD on and headshots almost never happened unless they were pulled off to the smallest polygon (which means they were extremely rare). The only spraying gun is the mini-gun and it was only used to finish people off when they had low hp. I could go on and on about this, but I just don't get why some people think UT is just some big chaotic spray and pray FPS, when it's probably the FPS that's the furthest away from that ever created.

It's funny, because this is like a half ass list. UT2k4 was good, but it wasn't great by any means. Alot of thier ideas came from Carmak and ID software. Best skill played fps hands down was Quake 1 and Netquake. Try playing anyone from oldskool DeathRow and you'll know what I mean. A game that is free, and being played more and more everyday is Warsow. Based on the q2engine, it runs really well. The only thing is the developers are very moody shall you say on the forums. And what about Urban Terror, another free game. The only downfall was that it was free, therefore tons of people hacked. My list goes like this:
1. Quake Series 1-3 including NetQuake and Warsow
2. Counterstrike (pre-source) Beta 5-7 before 1.0 came out, bunny hopping anyone
3. UT2k4
4. Gears of War, Quake 4, Painkiller, and Doom (all tied because I played them all the same amount of time)

It's not a half ass list. It's my opinion. It's also not a full list and not a lot of thought was put into it because this thread isn't asking for a list, it's asking for the best. I couldn't do that, so I did the best I could and came up with 3 (or 4). That list isn't coming from "Most skilled games evar", it's coming from how much fun I had, how much creativity those games held, and the respect I had for those games. UT2k4 may have taken things from the Quake series, but it did a damn good job of using it. To me, UT2k4 wasn't just good, it was great. To me, UT2k4 was better than the Quake series (and yes I played them all for a long time, along with classic UT). I simply had more fun with UT2k4 and felt much more competition when I played it. Might have been just me, but this is an opinion afterall.
Come on, if you want to play that game, then how are you calling my list half-assed when you have Gears of War, Quake 4, and Painkiller at number 4 for yours?
I think that I probably enjoyed playing Battlefield 2 and Battlefield Vietnam more than I enjoy playing Call of Duty 4...There are things in CoD4 that I wish weren't in the game at all, and I never found myself thinking in either of those battlefield games that anything needed to be nerfed or completely taken out of the game, it is completely devoid of balance issues, something that I cannot say about CoD4.
But I must say, I think that Call of Duty has it right with its health regeneration system...I know that there are medic classes and ways to heal in the battlefield games, but I think that when you do it like CoD4 does, you wind up having a game where individual skill takes precedence over how many other people someone has had to fight before you got to them....I can go on a 50 kill streak in CoD4 and never have to run to grab a health pack, and I think that that's good because it keeps me in the action and I don't have to worry about catching one random bullet that some noob sprayed from a heavy machine gun.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
I still think CoD 4 or Half life 2 is the best FPS games I've played, but Left 4 Dead was really sweet, if you are playing Co-op with some friends. I really recommend it for those who like Co-op playing
The acting sucked and the story was shallow but the game play was fantastic, it'll make you jump at least once, and playing as an Alien from facehugger to chestburster to Alien was fun and difficult.
Multi is pretty fun too and it's still up and running, if you can tolerate the people cussing out other people for using legimate tactics. I.E. Flamethrowers, disc, smartguns.
CoD4 easily. There is just so much skill in it when you play clan matches. It's also way better than CoD5... at least in terms of competition. CoD5 nerfed some skill factors(how nades are working now & sound) and the map designs are way worse(more suitable for DM/TDM than SD... missing the flow and choke points you'd otherwise need)
But holy fuck there are a lot of games missing. You should have made a halo series choice, call of duty series choice and so on, instead of giving each game one spot. I'm talking about GraW, R6, OFP, AA, Swat series, Quake series, UT series, Tribes, AVP, MoH and so on.

BF2 for the simple fact that as old as it is - it's still the best over all and is still one of the most played even today.
Planetside (oldschool) for the shear amount of players that could participate at one time. It was awesome in its day.
Mount & Blade for taking medieval warfare on the PC to a new level - awesome frakking game!

The only spraying gun is the mini-gun and the only thing that was used for is finishing people off when they had low hp. I could go on and on about this, but I just don't get why some people think UT is just some big chaotic spray and pray FPS, when it's probably the FPS that's the furthest away from that ever created.
Edit: Oh poo double post.
Quake 3 is by far the best fps game ever made.
Oh jolly, I played Left 4 Dead yesterday.
I still think CoD 4 or Half life 2 is the best FPS games I've played, but Left 4 Dead was really sweet, if you are playing Co-op with some friends. I really recommend it for those who like Co-op playing
Other: Aliens Vs Predator 2
Most recent would be CoD4 (mostly for the MP), before that CSS.
For single-player the most recent that comes to mind is Doom 3, that game was so atmospheric.
However the list is missing old school games, where's Quake, Doom to name a few?
