Reflecting on my MMO year

As another year rides us by I look back at my gaming highs and lows of 2008.

Highs:

• Unfortunately I don’t really want to list anything here because for me a ‘high’ means just that and although I had some great moments there has not been an MMO out there that kicked real gaming arse!

Lows:

• I know I have made more than enough comments in other threads about this game. For me it’s the dirty 3 letter word that is WAR (no one is allowed to utter this filthy word in my house now). I have never followed or looked forward to a game as much as this one and been so let down. Sometimes I think about resubbing to see the new changes but its like going back to a bad ex girlfriend, bad sex will always be bad sex.

• Tabula Rasa, bless this game. I actually had fun in it and some of its designs should be taken up in other MMO’s. E.g. NPC’s attacking control points. It had so much potential but after 6 months the lure of AoC made me quit but deep down I still wanted to see it soar like a Bane dropship but now as we all know its going to be... RIP Tabula Rasa.

Surprises

• My biggest surprise of 2008 is my lack of desire to log into EVE Online. I love this game and I hope it continues to have a massive future. However its just not a game you can play casually. Logging into EVE after 3 weeks feels like you need to rewrite the bible to understand the gameplay. After 5 years I never thought the day would come when I am seriously considering pushing the quit button.

• My 2nd surprise is Age of Conan. I was pretty disappointed with the game at launch and I knew I would be out of it within 3 months but since nothing else really pulled me in I would log on and stare at the nice pictures and listen to the cinematic music. As WAR came and went as a viable option something strange happened. AoC started to become a lot of fun. No more CTD’s, more maps, more content and more people. What has gone from a ‘must’ drop game has now grabbed my attention more than I thought it would and will take me into the New Year.

Looking Forward 2009

• No surprises here really. Darkfall, myth or reality? Hot air or knight in shining armour? Who knows but just the threads on this game has made it worth while. Both Darkfall and Jumpgate Evolution are my top 2 must buy in 2009.

Predictions

• I will continue to play AoC until end of Q2 in 2009. If Darkfall or Jumpgate Evolution upon release live up to my expectations I can see myself migrating across to both or maybe one. EVE Online will have a salute and possibly a tear from me but for a soon to be dad I can’t see this epic game having any time from this veteran gamer. (Possibly login in to see people walking).

Be interesting to hear from other people how their  year went...

I got a better idea. Why don't you get a life outside of your computer?  The real world is the best MMORPG ever!

The ironic thing is that people who write these comments are inadvertently projecting their own problems on to other people. Self loathing.

Apart from this, great read from the OP and I agree with WAR - complete farse.

had the same experience with WAR and EVE, didnt try AoC, Darkfall and the other 09 games so far, arent getting my attention, i was surprised at how much LotRO got my attention though, and how much i enjoy it.

Do not feed the troll, they regenerate, and can only be killed with fire.

[Edit]: I agree with WAR. Far too many bugs to make it an overall enjoyable experience, and falling off a cliff felt like... well, silly. I hated falling into water (from a height I would from a waterfall cliff... just a small one) and died. Death from water impact. Ugh.

Apart from that, well... I liked the pvp, but it got very samey, and you'd only end up playing one or two of the scenarios. Ever.

I kinda wanna play it, and kinda don't... I wanna do something productive.

I am going to make a crappy flash game now.

    Buhbye.

I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.

Whereas jumping from the highest object you can find into water, such as in World of Warcraft, and not taking a point of damage is completely logical?

Interesting comment about LotR and how it grabbed your attention.  I keep looking at LotR and even tried the demo once.  However one issue I had is the lack of options to run away from NPC's.  Is it possible?  Either way its always one that is on the fringes and seems to be a solid title that wont disappear tomorrow.

I look forward to 2009 for several reasons.

    A) Some interesting titles and almost all are indie.  If even one works out and delivers then that will be a bit of a win for the small guy.

    B) No obvious 'killer' title being released, no AoC, WAR, LotR kind of titles.  Plenty of obscure left field ideas and if anything should make for interesting times.

Stargate & Star Trek?  I have a feeling they are going to bomb and its strange saying that because I am fan of the lore.
