A friend & I are looking for a new game, either a MMORPG or FPS.
We'd like a highly populated MMO with great PvE content and detailed skills/classes.
OR
A FPS that is teamwork-based & tactical like Battlefield.
Not any of these choices:
Thanks in advance for your help & suggestions.

Hello. Based on your criteria you could try Team Fortress two it's a team based multiplayer game. For the MMORPG you could try LOTRO Its based on PvE but I never tryed it. City of heroes has a good PvE aspect also.
Playing:WoW, GA
Played:WoW,WAR,AoC,EQ,CoH,GW,EVE,Aion
Want to play:SW:TOR
Guild Wars is a game where PvP and PvE are great. I'd swing into the GW forum and ask for a trial. It's worth a shot. Especially since you can't find a better game for your money.

Hello my old friend.
For an RPG what do you consider great PvE content? Small group dungeons and raids? Does it matter if it has open PvP or crafting? Do you have a preference regarding graphics? Does instancing bother you or do you want an open world?

Lots of questing, big raids aren't a huge deal, but small group dungeons would be nice.
Preferably nice enough graphics, I guess like WoW or better. Also preferably an open world, but instancing is fine too.
Open PvP would be fine if it were only in certain parts, not everywhere you go.
Crafting would be great, too.

Have tried GW & both the PvE & PvP are great, but there isn't enough of the game, imo. We seemed to get through it too fast.

Hello Jet,
Well first off, good choices on games you are NOT looking for. But to the point, it's very hard to suggest MMORPGS lately with the state of more recent MMORPGS. From my *personal* opinion most MMOs out right now just don't cut it for me, but there are a few games that just recently have caught my attention and can actually hold it for more than a month.
First would be EVE online. MASSIVE game, one server, great open PVP, great crafting and such a huge learning curve you can be learning new stuff a year into playing. I'm NOT a EVE fanboy to say the least, so i will say that it is deff NOT for everyone, but with all the free trials going around on just about every MMO would it hurt to try and see if it is for you?
On to the FPS side, the only FPS (other than COD4) that has held me for years has been Counter Strike. Well Counter Strike Source, i did used to play CS 1.6, but i cannot bring myself to play such an ugly game. CSS is a great great FPS to buy and just always have installed on your computer to play when you feel like shooting some Mo Fos. It is very possible to find a really cool server and get to know a lot of people and maybe even become Admin? Along those lines downloading Steam is another great thing to have, with all the discounts on games they have and just the ability to always have the download rights to games you have bought should be enough to sign up with Steam.
Anyways thats my two cents, not worth much but both of those games are deff worth atleast a try

If I were you, I'd wait a couple of months before going for another 15 $ a month MMORPG... The most recent release still have some pretty major adjustments to do. I'd suggest you Atlantica Online meanwhile.. Free to play, combats a la Final Fantasy, great community.. The best free to play I've tried so far.
As for the FPS, Left 4 Dead is the best one out at this time imo... A blast to play with friends. Or there always Team Fortress 2, always fun to go back to that one now and then.
Highly populated and full of content are generally P2P games. That being said I suggest:
Lord of the Rings Online - Has the majority of what you're looking for. It has a trial so give it a shot.
Dungeons & Dragons Online - Mostly instanced, group oriented, no crafting, has raid content, lots of quests, weak pvp, and a dual class system. Also has a trial.
Lineage II - This might work as I read it has made leveling easier. It does have dungeons, raids, and an open world. Crafting information can be found HERE. Also offers a trial.

We were looking at Left 4 Dead being a possibility. Does it have unlocks for new weapons & such, sort of like Battlefield & CoD?

Hi DJ, thanks for your extensive response.
I believe I did try the EVE Online trial, but found it kind of complicated. I don't know if I'm just an idiot, or if it's complex. Is the PvP in this game voluntary, or is it unavoidable?

I don't want this to sound bad but did you ever get out of Pre(aka starting area)? The game takes place in a Pre-searing world and Post searing world. If you only ever played in Pre then you would get through the comtent quickly. GW is huge, with 3 chapters and 1 expansion.

Hello my old friend.
Yeah, we got through all of it. Still got through the content quickly, lol.

No L4D has acheivements but it does not have weapon unlocks.
No L4D has acheivements but it does not have weapon unlocks.
But..:
You can do ALOT with the game. You can alter pretty much anything you want. Infinite ammo, more monsters, higher hp monsters, godmode, anything.
It's a good few hundred hours of fun.
