Veteran MMORPG Players - What Game Do You Play Now?

Those of you who have 4 or more years experience playing MMORPG games:  What game do you play now?  I'm wondering if there is a correlation between years of MMORPG experience and current game of choice.  Please do not respond if you have less than 4 years of experience.  Thanks.

    Im playing Anarchy Online.

I am a MMORPG veteran, playing MMOGs since 1998 (Ultima Online)

    Games I Like=

Anarchy Online: The perfect mmorpg (IMO)
    DAOC: RvR is very fun
    WW2: balanced and intense battles
    UO: do almost everythng

    Games I Hate=

SWG: its a shame for the SW franchise, play KoTOR instead
    Lineage2: horrible economy, racist people
EQ: Welcome to the grinding coaster
    Horizons: Wheres everybody?
Sims Online: Wait for The Sims 2, even The Sims is better
CoH: 2 great months.......then it becomes SO repetitive

  • HarafnirHarafnir Member UncommonPosts: 1,350

Played since first month of UO. Got... 22 years of gaming experience now, or... 31 years if I add arcades. I am what might be called an old timer.

Right now, mostly betas of upcoming games and... building a char in SWG for JTL.

Only game I wait for right now: Imperator.
    Go Mythic!

i have played mmos since 2000 and right now im subscribed to EQ... but doing WoW stress test. Not really playing a game at all right now.

    Games i liked-

    1. EverQuest - game i got the farthest in and first mmo ie played
    2. PlanetSide- The game was fun but i missed EQ. good for people who like FPS.
    3. CoH- Was awsome for the first month but got old... but it still was fun. CoV will make it better.

    Games i hated-

    1. SWG- no fun at all.
    2. Earth and Beyond - Good thing this game is getting cancelled.
    3. Lineage 2 - played beta. horrible game

    1. CoH

    umm... thats it

RPGs I didn't like as much

    1. AO
    2. EQ
    3. DAoC
    4. Preton Tale and other korean RPGs

FFXI wasn't bad but it wasn't good it was so so

Ive been doing Momorpgs for 6+ years.. I think it might be 7, so I just say 6 to be safe.

Currently, Im thinking of Buying Ryzom, I really enjoyed that game, but first Im gona try Eve.

    I like:
UO - only game I played for more than 2 months
SWG - I personally only played it for 2 months, but my Brother, who also loves mmorpgs just finished 12 months on it.
Planetside - Fun game, really great if you have friends in it, but after a few months there is nothing more.
EnB - I actually liked Earth and Beyond, I had a lot of friends in it and I quite enjoyed it.

    Dislike:
Lineage 2 - way way too much grind.. it was just unreal, and the community was horrid.
Horizons - Original Concept was great, but since DA was removed (sad day) it went down hill, and now the game is garbage

    image
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...

Started with The Realm i forget how long ago..then i started playing UO in 99 and played it off and on up until AoS. Also played DAoC, SWG, L2, FFXI, Shadowbane, and some free ones (like Redmoon..when it was free).

Currently I don't play any MMORPG..I guess what I'm looking for just isn't out.

    I'm waiting for Darkfall image

    1997 here

    currently on planetside

    mmorpg i enjoyed

EQ- still the king of mmorpg  for me

DAoC- made me love pvp.Found out that pvp can be fun if you eliminate the looting, hate tells etc

CoH- one of the best mmorpg ever for a short period.gets boring after a couple of months

AC2- got more bad press then it deserved.played it 3 months and actually had fun.Left when the game became so empty that it lost the meaning of mmorpg

I think there are 2 types of mmo's for me.

First, the kind that have to be played super hardcore. EQ will always reign supreme in that category. It got old tho, just retired recently.

Second, there are the kind that you can play without thinking at all, and can come and go. DaoC was great about this after level 50. There weren't mandatory nightly raids every day of the week, but you could pop on and kill a few ppl here and there for fun.

Nowadays everything released has bored me to death and falls in neither category. (haven't tried EvE)

Horizons was the worst waste of 50 dollars ever.

Ragnarok was absolutely terrible. (more bots than pindle can shake a stick at)

Wasn't a fan of Lineage II.

Recently I have been playing Xbox live waiting for the new wave of Mmos coming out. Mebbe one will grab me up again like EQ and DaoC did for so long.

    Gaming 10 years. MMORPG's about 5-6.

The only MMORPG I played for more then a year was AC1. 2 1/2 years.

EQ1 was a very teambased group/guild game, and I was never able to find a suitable guild to join. That, and the death penalty in that game made you weep from losing the last 15 hours of leveling, or more, from one death.

DAoC, got it at release, played free month (or did I not even finish the free month) and into my memoirabilia of old MMORPG's it goes. Reasons for quitting was bugginess, lag, grind, and you can't fight in realm battles unless your uber.

AO, I played Beta, I sensed the same old crap, I didn't even purchase it. Although I did get a laugh out of the little critters that spoke in l33tness, and the piranha's that were bugged and were purple men with question marks all over em.

    SWG...Need I say more?

AC2. It was a depression period really. You play a great game like AC1, you think, "Well. This is going to be a great game, the first one was one of a kind and innovative." Boy was I wrong. The game was HORRENDOUS. The innovative combat system, GONE. Replacing it with cavemen style like DAoC and EQ1.

This is what happends when you fire all the original devs and replace em. You come up with this crap. Its sort of like when Artifact Entertainment fired whats his face. (the innovator of Horizons)

Lost the vision, and got a big name company to rush them out the door. So sad, AC2 could of been great.

The list goes on, and on, and on, and on. Personally, I haven't found one so far that will appease me. World of Warcraft was promising, interesting system. But unless they come out with 50% more content, and a awesome PvP server. Won't be playin that.

Dark & Light, Mourning, and Darkfall look promising. Especially Mourning & Darkfall.

I'm not playing a MMORPG right now. I am following Darkfall actively. In the meantime I wanted to play Dragon Empires, but we know what happened to that, so I guess I'll play some WoW. It's not because it really interests me, but I know it'll be a quality product, and well, my clan decided to play it untill DF.

Dunno about lag and bugs in DAoC on release. From all the mmorpg i played it was one of the smoothest release.Certainly beats the release of UO,EQ and AC in terms of bugs and lags(never lagged one bit was using a geofrce2 if i remember then).

Grind i have to agree it has a grind for sure.Uberness- yes now but certainly not in the first month. In short on my server  the first level 50 albion appeared only after the first month and hibs was about close.Only realm that had a level 50 on my server in under 1 month was midguard because they found some area that was milking them experience.

But nah in the first month uberness did not exist or even if it did was very rare. Now yes it does exist with bots to match.

OK and once again someone bash a game withotu actually knowing what he talk about: You got DaoC first month?! Did you actually PLAY the game then, or just bought the box and wrote down some complaints by yourself? DaoC is alone on the market to brag about a smooth release. Alone. It worked from scratch. ok, content wise it was pretty slim, but it worked.

And.. hey, really. Could nto fight in realm battles unless you were uber. If I ever heard a comment from someone who just got the game but want to sound experienced, its that one.

I was out first month, and second with my lvl 30!! Thane.. lvl 30!! And he had a blast in Realm combat. because everyone was new and so was I and it was an even field uberwise.

TODAY maybe that comment is true.. NOT when "you bought the game at release"

So, logging off. Now can we go back to those that truly are veterans?

Only game I wait for right now: Imperator.

I have been playing MMORPG's since 1998, starting with UO.

I have since played just about all of them looking for that little something that I got from the original UO. Many of the MMO's I've played have given me some great experiences and I have met alot of really great people.

I have been playing the WOW stress test and I have to say, it's going to be the one i'm gonna play when it comes out. It's really a great game. I was going to wait for EQ2, even though i'm not a big fan of EQ Live, but I would probably have to upgrade my system to see a beautiful world and get good performance.

So as for me i'm waiting on WOW image

No, I never implied that it was horridly bugged or laggy. It was pretty smoothe, but it still had its issues. That was a minority of my complaint. Mainly it was the boring grind.

And by uberness, well, uberness is a relative term, I didn't mean lvl 50's etc. I'm not sure if I even saw many 35+'s. But it was newbie uberness you could say.(Meaning they were uber to you at that time) I was not a high profile powerleveler, and so thus it was hard to go up against people in RvR that were. RvR seemed to be well, all about either levels, or mass numbers. No player skill involved in that game it seemed.

I couldn't really get into RvR because i'd get my arse handed to me, so thus I'd have to go back to leveling, which was boring beyond belief. I already did the leveling grind in other MMORPG's, didn't have much want to do it again. I'd think its about time leveling in a game is actually fun. So that was the end of that.

And harafnir, have a beer, you seem a little high-strung.image

How long are we supposed to try MMOs until we can decide if we like it or not? Now a month isn't even enough to stop people from saying "you didn't even give it a chance".

I don't know about othe people, but if I'm not having fun the first 5 days I play a game, I usually won't play that game ever again.

And FFXI also had a smooth release, even smoother than DAoC IMO( though I guess you'll argue that FFXI was released in Japan already...)

I've got 5 years of mmo now.

EQ- Was good for a year and a half, then got insanely boring

    SWG- Too unbalanced, repetitive, boring

Eve Online- Too much travel time, steep learning curve, though not too bad once you get it

Currently waiting for Dark and Light

  • KoltraneKoltrane Member UncommonPosts: 1,049

Been gaming since Pong, played a couple of MUDs, but first MMORPG was Neverwinter Nights around 1994.

I'm currently playing DAoC - been playing for almost a year.  The game is very complex and Mythic does a good job of keeping the game fresh and up to date.  With Catacombs coming out later this year, this one is going to stay popular.

EVE is a great game, but it's an acquired taste.  It's certainly worth taking advantage of the 14-day trial to see if it's your cup of tea.

I quit EQ in 2001 after playing for 2 years.  I recently DLed the EQ trial to walk down memory lane and was very disappointed.  I had forgotten how poor the graphics are and how hard it is to get around.

Looking forward to EQ2 and Ryzom.  I'm also looking forward to Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Yeah a month is about right to know if this game suits you.But 5 days is too short.Usually i make up my mind by the free month period.

And yeah FFXI was already nearly 1 year in japan before it got released in NA.

Hello, I've been playing MMO's since about 1999. Currently I am waiting for many games to come out such as: WoW, EQ2, Dark and Light, Wish and Mourning. I hope to play them all at one point, although Im afraid Wish and Mourning possibly Dark and Light may not live up to the standards they strive for, but I will have to see the games for myself.

I think EQ2 and WoW have good chances and being that I already have seen WoW, I'm really looking forward to EQ2 first. The graphics are amazing. That alone will entertain me for weeks if there was nothing else to do. Alright, well graphics dont make everything but they certainly help. I like World of Warcraft's graphics but I feel like they are trying to step back too much from the "oooo shiny" graphics a bit too much. Everything feels very cartoonish coming from DAOC. Just my thoughts on upcoming games that I am waiting for while I sit around playing Tribes Vengeance and finishing up on WoW Stress Test. Some good gaming coming for us in the next few months.... I'll be waiting :)

    lates.

I started playing Runescape in mid/end of summer 2000. Then in 2001 I checked out AC. 2002 I was into AO. Then later EQ. And in 2003 SWG from launch to present. I almost never play just 1 game at a time. (I make enough $$$ now and can easily afford it. image It litterally pays to be a "nerd" image ) Games I'm playing right now:

     - EvE Online as much as possible.

     - DAoC when I get tired of EvE.

     - Anarchy Online off and on. Maybe 1-2 times a week.

     - SWG off and on. Maybe 1-2 times a week. Played it all day yesterday though, because I friend was playing it all day. He came back from a trip he took. When Jump to Lightspeed gets released, I plan to re-sort to my old hardcore SWG sessions.

     - Runescape. What can I say? It brings back many memories. I play it off and on. Maybe go 1-3 months without playing, then check back. Currently re-checking back into it.

     - AC ... I am thinking about going back to it. But haven't decided yet. maybe 3 months from now. If no, then maybe 2 years from now, just for the heck of it. Just to bring back the old memories.

I am also looking forward to trying and playing.........

.... WoW, EQ2, GW, and the mighty VANGUARD image........ and maybe a few others if they make it past their vaporware stage.

I'm wondering if there is a correlation between years of MMORPG experience and current game of choice.  Please do not respond if you have less than 4 years of experience.  Thanks.

IMHO, no there is no correlation between years of MMORPG experience and current game of choice. Because right now there are TONS of more varried choices. 4 Years ago there was.... UO, EQ, AC, and RS. Some say there was only EQ. Only broke gamers played RS image back then when all of RS was 100% free. (Back then I was one of them too.)

Right now players play whatever game more because they actually like it, enjoy it - not because they are forced to aka because it is the only choice aka either play it or nothing. Most would pick playing something over nothing, even if they dislike it.
