I agree with you that they are not the same thing ... said I don't think changing the registry is against ToA. Anywho ... changing weather, turing opening cinemtic off, resolution, ... none of that creates an advantage. Well less turing the weather effects off since it is less stuff to potentially lag you out ... but that brings me to my next point: Can't you already do all that stuff in game or with the configure application that comes with the game? Why go in and change the registry if you are already given the tools to do these very things? What is the advantage of the registry over the tool?
Because the higher resolutions should already be in the configuration tool, but it is not after all these years and for some nebulous reason Square won't update PC choices... The only advantage is a crisper image and to some of us that's a huge issue.
One of the reasons I won't play Vanguard anymore, is it has no support for anti alias and it's obvious. Wish I could have forced it, but it doesn't work.
Also another retarded thing about SE, they should update the screenshot resolution and give people even less of a reason to use windower. I'm using the default windowed version of FFXI and fraps for my screens, but wish I didn't have to.
prolly not ... LotRO is really clickey (good game, but not good enough to pull you away from the rest of life -- and you can't be a wizard) ... WAR is too new ... WoW runs subliminal images to keep their players addicted and the rest are crap. FFXI has to be number 2 out of default there.
Here's A Link to my personal photo album (I have many more, just not all uploaded). There are some areas I haven't even been to yet that are beautiful (Sky, Lufaise Meadows, etc) but you can find screens of them around the web.
I agree, FFXI still maintains its quality to this day.. In my opinion, because of at least one obvious reason:
1. It *is* Square-Enix.
SE aren't exactly push-overs in the graphics/art dept. Sometimes I'm amazed that others are amazed that their graphics look good, even built around dated specs. They have quality artists/designers there.
... and for a few not-so-obvious reasons:
1. Art-driven, not tech-driven:
The game relies on artwork over tech to establish and carry its look. Technology will look dated as new technology comes along (DX7 looks outdated compared to DX9, etc). Solid artwork, though, is ageless. It always looks good because it's untouched by technology.
2. Wise use of resources.
Notice how they prioritize details. Key elements, such as characters or important features of an environment receive noticeably higher polygon counts, while more background things that are "fleeting" are more reserved. That is smart design.
Notice where they use higher detail textures as well - on characters, on creatures and on objects/locations of special significance. Things like the ground and such, which most players will only ever see in passing, tend to be a bit lower in detail. Further, the environment elements with lower detail tend to use textures that makes them look worn and weathered anyway, which remains consistent with their overall look/feel.
Basically, they use every poly and every pixel that gets rendered in the best possible way.
They're working around limited resources (thanks PS2), and applying detail intelligently.
3. Contrast.
The normal gameworld areas are very "earthy" looking. Worn, weathered and, with very few exceptions, not at all "spectacular" looking. This is, again, a wise design decision. Because when they want an area to seem very out-landish and bizarre and vibrant and even weird (SE does "weird" very well), they will hit those more vivid and colorful color palettes, and/or use some of those more bizarre environment concepts (think: Promyvion, Sea, etc).
If every area looked equally vibrant and colorful and "weird", then those that are supposed to be, lose their effect.
As an analogy... If you play your stereo at 9 all the time, ratcheting it up to 10 isn't going to be as big a difference as if you had your volume at 4 and then cranked it up.
They understand contrast, not only in colors, but in environment design.
4. Attention to detail.
Run through Jeuno, you see that the floor looks like it's been trampled on by many, many feet (and it has). Flyers and such adorn the walls, making the place look "lived in". The same can be said of other environments.
In all, those are reasons I believe the game maintains its visual integrity to this day. Yes it couldlook better if they upgraded the PC and 360 clients to support DX9, so they could use higher detail textures, more effects, etc.. But for what it is, the game still looks damn good.
I fully expect that their next MMO (project: Rapture) will use these more recent technologies, like DX9/10, but will still use them tastefully and not gratuitously, so that like always the art and design of the game establishes and carries its look, not the technology it uses. The technology will be used to enhance the look, not define it.
Anyway... my 2 gil :-p

Amazing images, {those aren't frogs, they're demons from Hell!} makes me wonder why I ever left and havn't yet returned to FFXI. Nothing else has ever held my attention as much, and the little bit of story that I've gotten to experience was the best ever in any MMO!
What server do you play cause looking through those images I recognized quite a few names of players I used to play with frequently.....maybe they've switched servers since when I played...or just duplicates on your server....heh
Ah well, would love to see more if you get a chance to upload the others you mentioned having!
One thing I remember not liking was the characters faces etc looked more detailed in character creation, than they actually did in game. Has that changed?
Personally, the biggest hinderance with FFXI isn't the graphics (though they really need to stop being spoiled children about things and just increase the clip plane/LoD on PCs already, and some of the older textures could really use a boost) but the controls. Yes, you can get used to it, but a gamepad is practically required to play the game in the comfortably, and even then you need plenty of prep time getting the controls configured just right. The console versions are already nice and configured, but (while I'm sure this will be massively unpopular as a large portion of the playerbase still uses the PS2 version) playing this on the PS2 is laughable, and the double dip of the Live fee and subcription for the 360 version is also less than ideal, as is the inability to adjust the game settings at all, but then again I've never seen MMOs on consoles as a good idea.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I agree Kordesh. I played XI for a couple years, I think the game could have been flat out amazing if they had built it with PC in mind instead of PS2 and a crappy port to PC. I believe I read somewhere that in Japan a lot more players play on PS2 than PC though. I have high hopes for the MMO they have in development. I hope they build on all the good aspects of FFXI and take it from there.
OP is full of shit. That "screenshot" is heavily altered. That amount of detail and shading is NOT in FFXI.
Edit: Alright, registry altering. As I said, heavily altered and NOT what the average FFXI user is going to achieve through ingame settings. So for the majority of people, FFXI graphics are still going to suck
Maybe Square ought to incorporate those registry tweaks into the actual game.
For the record, I like FFXI. It's a great game. But the graphics have NEVER been its strong suit.
The graphics are outdated, but you can get them to look clear/vivid as day with a good monitor and graphic card.I especially lean towards a good monitor like the Hi Bright ones[HDMI].I did no registry tweaks at all on my newer machine and it looks 100x better than my older one with the tweaks. The tweaks are needed however on older machines ,i remember it looked real bad without them.
ZERO shader use in FFXI,they were limited by the playstation back then,it would have lagged the game badly.

I agree, as the OP hasn't responded yet, he is full of it! I forget where but i have seen something like that for ffxi, it was CGI by todays standards.
If you can post more screen shots that you have something to shows us (like a shout to MMORPG.com or something) and they look like that, I'll pay a years sub for you to ffxi and join myself to play beside you.
You can increase the graphics by using RegEdit and some other programs that increase the graphic resolution past the 1024x1024 that the original game had maxed at. I think the OP pic is edited though....

Dude if you know me at all i don't BS as a fanbois for any game. You can easily get the game to look that good with NO tweaks. The colours are limited there is no shader use but the game still looks clear and vivid.Just use a good monitor and video card,NO tweaks needed,my new machine looks BETTER than old one WITH tweaks.
I have not done the tweak since my last PC,all you do is enter the binary equivalent of the size you want.I think it was something like 64x64=512x512 or something along those lines.
You can get any decent game to look that good, only the newer games have high end graphics, but i still enjoy the effort Square did on these older graphics.
The great looking older games were Everquest2,Sigil's Vanguard was an old project that rivals any game out there[revamped DX9],umm hard pressed to think of an older project that uses shaders and looks great. Not one good looking game by Blizzard, however i did notice they are using high end shaders in there SC2 project,i wonder what engine they using for that game.
Anyhow don't pick on poor little FFXI,PC gaming was not even thought about in JPN when this game was made, square was strictly a console game designer and a very good one at that. You want to judge SE ,do it on their next PC project,i have no knowledge of their half assed effort using the UE3,for that game they designed for NA.I do not believe their heart and soul went into that project,it was more a testing thing than anything else, and probably some ideas stolen LMAO.

Shan is coming into her own as a Monk these days (which means a new banner will be necessary at some point), so maybe I'll start taking more of that.

They're not full of it. That's what Promyvion looks like. Check my photo-album (linked in a previous post in this thread); I have a couple shots taken in the same area. The only thing I use is the registry hack. I don't use Windower (I use the built-in windowed mode that SE added) and use Fraps for screenshots.
The textures are still the same highly compressed textures, the lighting and everything is the same. The only difference is that on PC you can tweak the registry to get the rendering resolution up to 2048x2048 or, conceivably, higher. It makes everything look more "crisp", nothing more.
I know on the 360 the rendering tends to be more "vivid" thanks to its improved video capabilities.

I wonder if FFXI's superb graphics has anything to do with it.
prolly not ... LotRO is really clickey (good game, but not good enough to pull you away from the rest of life -- and you can't be a wizard) ... WAR is too new ... WoW runs subliminal images to keep their players addicted and the rest are crap. FFXI has to be number 2 out of default there.

FYI, those are all real in-game screenshots.
The contents of this post do not necessarily reflect the views of MMORPG.com and its management.
Those are 3D models from the game integrated into real-life images.
Some very good work there, to match the lighting, etc. I've used a couple of them as my Windows wallpaper from time to time.
