I want to know...cuz I've been thinking of this for a while...
Is there any type of MMO out there without a type of control towards your character, and what I mean by that is choosing a type of class to begin your hero. I want to play an mmo where I don't have to choose a class and just begin as whatever and be able to upgrade a selection of skills, like universal upgrade.
I hate being branded on what I am in games, instead of being a fighter the whole game, I want to choose around a bit and maybe go into some magic.
Now what I'm REALLY want to play is a what I stated above in the modern time with sweet looking graphics.
Any suggestions?

Invent a Time Machine to 2003 and play Star Wars Galaxies. EVE Online offers that but the game is pretty niche. Everything else isn't really worth playing and don't listen to the people who say Darkfail.
Runescape, even though it doesnt have "sweet" graphics, its skill based and really good. Also The Saga Of Ryzom isnt too bad, its got decent graphics and skill based.
Currently restarting World of Warcraft
You really have no idea how many of us want this in an MMO yet get hung out to dry year after year(with the exception of a small few games, and nothing new)
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
You can try Ultima Online, EVE Online and take a look at The Sagee of Ryzom.
Being a sci-fi lover, I am looking forward to Earthrise. It features a skill-based character system, instead of class based like WoW and most other mmorpg's out today. It will also have a deep, complex crafting system and will have a fully player-driven economy.
There is a lot of talk around here about Darkfall on this site, but I really like the direction Earthrise is headed. I think it may end up being a niche game for sandbox lovers like me, sort of like how EVE is. I'm perfectly fine with niche games like EVE. I think we have way too many games trying to cater to the masses playing WoW, and not enough companies making games for everyone else.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
I would suggest looking at www.mortalonline.com
The graphics aren't anything amazing, but they aren't crap either so I suggest taking a look at:
Eternal Lands - No set classes and the graphics have been updated, but they haven't been on this site yet. Check out this post in the EL forums for other information: Ten reasons you HAVE to play EL!
Shin Megami Tensei - I recently started playing it and you can either be long ranged melee, short ranged melee, or a caster. You have to use the skills in order to level them and be able to choose other skills in the same catagory so if you want to be a rifle shooting sword swinging destruction magic person you can. I did a little write up of its features in my blog which can be found HERE. However if you're all about reacing the level cap first I suggest not playing this game because it will take awhile. Its also not so much a quest grind as it is a dungeon mob grind.
