Mobile Internet - Anyone any experience? seems to be MMO only problem

I cannot get wired/cable internet where I am living so have got mobile broadband. duno if you have this in america its like a usb dongle which connect wirelessly to the internet. pretty sweet if you have a laptop.

I have played quite a few online shooters with this connection and got a much higher ping but it still works. however when I have tried this internet with MMO's so far (warhammer online and age of conan) I get major lag issues. like beyond lag where the characters just all stand still forever basically a disconnect but I cannot log out and have to end task. wierdly I can still use chat in these games. in other online games to europe my ping is like 200-250, this should be enoguht to cause this.

my computer says its 3.6mbps, which is not really true. I have a program which tells me what my current download rate is so when I download something obviously this goes up and down. when I am playing these games this hovers really low.

I'm thinking I might DC in MMOs because my internet it is to basically after a while giving up on the connection. as if it thinks the program doesn't need connection anymore. really have no idea how to fix this, make my computer somehow assign the programm more bandwidth or something.

I have all the ports and programes in my firewall exceptions list. I get this even with firewall off. only thing I have thought of trying is assigning the programm high prioty via windows task mamanger but it doesn't seem to do anything.

if anyone has any advice I'd love to hear it.

contact the company and see if they have any ideas. sounds like you are far away from a tower/satellite dish.

no i have 100% signal alot of the time. I can use the internet and play online shooters, download stuff pretty quick. its just mmos it doesn't seem to like at all.

I think the reason why MMORPG's dislike cellphone connections has to do with the relatively small packet size and bit inefficient transfer resulting from it. It's been ages though since I followed GPRS/3G development more closely so they might have solved those hurdles - at least with 3G networks.

You might get some improvement with playing around the MTU setting of your OS, probably by lowering it, but mobile data isn't really that good for MMO's.

I've had something similar... get rid of it, those wireless connection are garbage to play games on.  You might get good connection with downloads and web sites, but when it comes to games, its just simply nooo goood.  try getting a top of the line INTERNET card where you can plug your little wireless gizmo into.  some INTERNET cards work really good at boosting signal strength and increase latency. 

But as far as wireless comes for gaming, its just noo good.  Ping in the 200's for an fps is RANK.  i use to have a ping of 32 in counter-strike.  And now that I've upgraded to verizon FioS its even better.  I live in the states, and its easy to find good INTERNET connection here.  see if you can possibly find something better where you live around, if your really a avid gamer get a hardline installed lol.

Perhaps he can wait until they come out with a stronger satellite INTERNET connection, but until then, they are all terrible to play games on.

Latencywise, satellite is the worst technology available and will stay worst unless some serious adcances in FTL technology are made

Where I work I saw a dude who was in between shifts playing WoW in his car.  If I run into that guy again I'll ask him if he worked through any problems similar to yours.

thats horrible advice, he didnt say video games in general didnt work, just MMORPGs.

Sorry, Online Multiplayer FPS/MMO's , etc. 

Keep playin them video games, they're great.  But keep trying to get a better conenction.
