    Short answer "yes".

Why do kids spray paint walls, break windows or steal cars?   They are bored.

I imagine some writers are bitter, angry..or just bored.

    For fun.

I remember making a few basic ones back in the 90's and back then there was no protection on most peoples pc's and I was getting their details and fucking up their pc's and it was fun. Then all this XP shit came out and I just couldn't be bothered to learn/adapt and stopped.

    Pure poser statement.

Half the viruses made are from anti-virus companies trying to continue the threat of viruses.  The majority of the rest are for profitering/identity theft.

Although the OP here is a bit naive for asking something as silly as that, i think the discussion has been at least entertaining. Cleffy my friend thats a bold statement to say the least but i think its at the very least plausible. Btw idk what adaptations you are talkiing about with XP... I have whipped up a few viruses over the years for fun (started in sixth grade), not for any truly malicious purposes instead i used to try to outsmart my friend. Ahhhh simpler times.

Normally the only real uses for viruses are for personal information.  People will go months without knowing that there are people looking at all your internet transactions and other personal things.  They can obtain credit card information even your social security information.

Some do it for the challenge, for the thrill of not getting caught.

    Others are bored.

The vast majority just want your keys to steal your identity and/or money.

Most hackers just do it too prove that they can, the others are made by anti virus companies to sell their products.

Is there any proof that anti virus companies actually do that? Cause that would be quite humorous

From what I remember reading a year or so ago there are hackers that just do the virus and then put it on the internet as a file, and then let others spread it.

Also while not viruses there are people creating trojans for profit. ProRat for example, they have a website in which you can buy the trojan for about 200 dollars (or something like that) and then let you do the rest, I.E: infecting other computers and have your fun.

There is no law against creating viruses or malicious code. There is law, however, of using such code to compromise or damage another machine.

Dunno how it is in Sweden (where I live) but I guess we got the same. If that is the case then creating and selling viruses/trojans should be completely legal.

I loved teh AOL progs, lol.  I used to go to lenshell.com they had a bunch of them there.  I used to use Dreamcatcher, it had a virus lab in it to create trojans of some sort.  It was a good one.

I certainly have no first hand knowledge, but like others have already said there can be a profit motive involved. And then we've also seen some in this thread say "fun". It amazes me that people can think that way, but there certainly appears to be no shortage of sociopaths and sadists in our world.

I'll just say to these types, enjoy yourself while you can. But it will probably catch up with you eventually. And if the rest of us are lucky, you'll gain some better insight into your behavior when you're getting beaten and raped in prison by others of your own kind.

the real question is why people are using windows for anything else than gaming? that includes surfing the web.

    They deserve to be infected.
