Could you please ask your question again? It is hard to understand. Are you just curious about the differences between the 2 games? Do you play one of them and want to know about the other?

Guildwars is more of a pvp game. It does have a PvE storyline though and the world is instanced except for hub areas. It uses it's own lore created by the devs (I suppose).

Lord of the Rings is mostly a PvE game with a wide open world but it uses instances for story telling. It also has a linnear storyline but there are many other quests that one can do without ever touching the main quest.

In Guild wars you are limited to the skills you choose when you go out into the instanced world or arena.

You have more access to your skills in LOTRO but you do not get the class matchups that you have in Guild Wars. There are the standard classes but you can tweak them with things called traits.

And of course, LOTRO is based on the LOTRO books.

I should mention that there is pvp in LOTRO but it is confined to one area and you can either use your "good" character that you levelled up or you can use a "monster character" that you choose at lvl 10. You can't level it up but you an acquire things to make it better. And no, monsters can't hang out anywhere in the world, they are confined to the Ettenmoors.

I absolutely loved Guild Wars and played it non-stop for over a year. On the other hand, I was bored out of my mind and couldn't get passed the free trial of LotRO. Just my $.02

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

    Play the trial:

    (This is for EU players)

I know there are Italian guilds on the Evernight server if you have problem with english.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I really wanted to like GW, but the instancing made it feel like a single-player game. In other words, it completely lacked immersion. LOTRO, on the other hand, has immersion in spades, mostly because of the beautiful environments and IP. That's the number one thing I want from an MMO.

I like both games, but for completely opposite reasons.

As an earlier response pointed out, GW focuses on PvP, and the PvE content is mostly a means to an end.  It has a low level cap, less quests, and is completely instanced (outside of the hubs).  I believe that the goal is to learn your class in PvE and then the focus immediately switches to PvP from that point forward.  Players create many characters because it's so easy to level them up.

If you like PvP, GW is a great game.

On the other hand, LotRO focused on PvE, and the PvP is basically thrown in almost as an "afterthought" to satisfy those players who might want to do some PvP on the side.  But the focus is absolutely on the lore, the story, and the open (non-instanced) desig of the world definitely lends itself to that.  Players create fewer characters that they get more 'attached to' and strive for maximum level and end-game content.

If you like PvE, LotRO is a great game.

Depending upon my mood, I play either game... being a lifetime subscriber of LotRO (no monthly fees) helps as well, since it effectively makes both games free to play every month for me... but unless you buy the lifetime subscription, that's an important distinction to make.  For most people, GW is free every month whereas LotRO has a subscription.

I currently play LotRO and love it.  I tried GW for a short while, but the instancing just wasn't my thing.  I enjoy both PvP and PvE play, but it depends on how I feel on any given day.

I suggest trying LotRO, just to check it out.  It has some of the best PvE around imo.

    PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

    WAITING FOR: Dust 514

The people saying Guild Wars is just a PvP game have no clue what they're talking about.  While it is true that Guild Wars does pvp better than most MMORPGs (mainly due to it being something other than "whoever is higher level and/or has better gear wins"), it also has a quite considerable PvE side.  Of course, "better than most MMORPGs" is a low enough standard that I still don't think Guild Wars does PvP all that well;    PvP and PvE in Gulid Wars are kept mostly separate, but each is a substantial game in its own right.

To the original poster:  I think the acronym you're looking for is LotRO, not LorD.  (What's the D stand for, anyway?)

I'm too lazy to give a full comparison of the two games. I was slightly obsessed with GW (played it for 3 years). But I probably like LoTRO just a little more. Two awesome games, LOTRO just slightly better  :)

Guild Wars: A PvP focused game where the zones are all instanced (except cities and towns).  It has a PvE side as well but It was thrown in to appease PvE players.  However, the PvE in Guild Wars is great in my opinion.  You do not need to play the game for a month to be able to get some money, gear, and a lot (if not all) of the missions completed as well as quests and skills put together.  Guild Wars is for an extremely casual player who may have only a few hours a week to put into a game.  It has no monthly fee and again, very low level cap so playing just a few hours a week you can still get pretty far in the game.  Hardcore players may become bored with it quickly.  I was a hardcore player for 2 years and only lost interest when I found Final Fantasy XI.  I rarely did PvP despite owning a guild of around 200 people and we did do GvG.

Lord Of The Rings: Online:  I have not played this much recently.  I played the beta and bought it when it went public and played for a few months.  Problems plagued the game and i quicly got frustrated and bored of it.  I did the recent 5 Day Trial for returning players but it never did capture me in the time I got to play.  However, This game is different than Guild Wars in that most areas are not instanced.  The Game is also very PvE centric instead of PvP (The exact opposite of Guild Wars in this respect) and has a ton of quests, missions and even crafting (Guild Wars has no crafting period).  More time is needed to get much done in the game but not a great deal.  You can probably get by with about 10 hours a week as long as you could string 2-3 of thosehours together in one sitting.  The game is fairly easy to pick up and the graphics to it are stunning.  The plus to the game is that it can be as simplistic or complex as you make it.  When I played, making money was not a problem and even to this day is the only game where making money isn't a grind.  If you dedicate just a little time to it, the money can be made quite easily.  I'm not sure how this is accomlpished but kudos for this.

As you can see, the games are really only similar in genre only.  If you are looking for an easier, quicker game.  Guild Wars is the game to play.  If you want a more complex game (yet still fairly simple) then LotR is a good game.  It does have a monthly fee however, unlike Guild Wars but it has by far more content to make up for it.

    EVE - Sharvala
    FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

Not a fair contest LOTR is admittedly a PVE game with content pvp elements are low and you shouldn't build your game around it, GW is pure pvp group battles and all content is instanced. You could maybe do this comparison with WoW because they Try to have it both ways ( and fail ) but with GW its pure yin and yang.
