Try the free trials of the games that have one available and find out for yourself! Or grab a buddy key from here for the games that do not have trial available. There isn't the best for everyone MMO around - trick is finding the best for you.

In the different genres:

Group based high mystery high immersion: FFXI

PvP/PvE Sandbox: EVE Online

Quest based soloable grind: LotRO

Confused: Vanguard

F2P: Atlantica Online

Honestly though, you should check out Atlantica Online as well and just pay for the items that cost around a monthly fee to advance quicker.  It is a popular and well made game.

I wouldn't rule out high quality F2P with Item Mall.  They will be on par with P2P games soon.

This is all opinion, I'm sure you know that.

I will give you my favorite/best MMOs atm if you like but im sure people will disagree.

 

Best Fantasy pvp?  WAR, Lineage 2, Guild Wars

Best Sci-fi pvp?  Eve Online

Best fantasy Pve? WoW, Lotro

Best Sci-fi Pve? Anarchy Online

Best character customization? City of Heroes

Best Graphics? AoC, EvE Online

 

Best game overall for myself that suits my gameplay style? EvE Online

 

This is all opinion of course personally I would tell you to try all these games and others trial offers.

Then you can make up your own mind and have your own opinions on the subject.

I agree that the best MMORPG is finding whats right for you.

However, I would say that WoW has shown to be a solid choice for most players

I would add that EvE and LOTRO are the best games we are not playing

ooh right. what i really want to ask is, in your opinion, not a review or anything, out of these games, what do you think i should play.

WAR: i got it as soon as it came out and was sad about the weak population, did it get better?

Age of Conan: Is this dead? and is it at all worth playing?

WoW: WOTLK: just putting it out there, i have two level 70s and i dont really want to get into 7 hour raids, but how is it?

if ur very casual, i would buy lotro. if u can get into a good guild and like to raid, get wotlk. if you want the best pvp on the market (imo) get war. want a sandbox? try eve. want something thats like wow but not? get eq2.

most p2p mmos offer free trials  (including Vanguard)

- with exception to AOC and WAR because they were released in the last 6 months

Aion in Korea....but until its out for NA, my vote would go for WoW, Lineage 2, EVE or GW...Lineage 2 wouldnt be on the list if this was 2006-mid 2008.

Its a very opinionated question, I could sit here and talk to all day about how much I love Guild Wars and EVE Online and that they are the best games ever all day, but it wouldn't make it valid. Someone could just reply, "I happen to think Maplestory is the best game eve." Although id make a expression and ask if he/she is on any sort of medication they would have just as much of a valid point as me.

My suggestion is to look at my forum sig under where I listed my past mmo's. There is a link to an MMORPG Finder, try it.
