I started playing the fourth coming again and have been having a BLAST . I was wondering why doesnt a game company make a mmo with titan quest graphics and focus on gameplay. I would love to play a game like ultima if it had slightly better graphics and was still alive... just my two cents sure ill get a lot of flack

I myself would love to see a super high quality and well funded low fantasy medieval MMO using Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale type graphics (polished up for modern times) or even Diablo III type graphics. High quality western 2D MMOs are definitely missing.
I always wondered that myself. I would guess that most people just can't get over 2d graphics. It makes no sense to me that developers would choose to force us to play 3D mmorpgs unless thats what most people want.
Myself I love UO isometric style graphics. Its a little counter intuitive, but I find them more immersive because of the small field of vision. In real life I don't see miles into the horizon, unless I have a height advantage. Theres generally *&*% in the way, such as trees hosues or hills. I'm only aware of whats going on in my immediate vicinity, and Isometric view gives me the same feel.
Because VIDEO games are partly about graphics. There are plenty of games with good graphics AND gameplay. Why do we need to gimp ourselves and give up one of the two?
Its kind alike asking "why arent people watching black and white TVs?" or why arent people using 8 tracks or albums anymore?".......The technology has advanced, but unfortunately the gameplay hasnt always followed those improvements........Graphics are actually a selling point for quite a few people.......Others will play a Ultima type game if the gameplay is good but most want a combo of good graphics and good gameplay.
In reality, all the "2.5D" games I've played are older, and therein lies the problem. I'd love to play a game that has Ultima or Diablo style graphics, except that generally those kind of games look somewhat depressing, at least to me. I'ts not necessarily the graphics, but the colors are usually bland, such as having dark green grass, dark brown ground, dark gray stone buildings, etc.. I would absolutely love it if someone made a good game that had the graphics you're talking about, but for god's sake they need color(and high resolution).
Only the best graphics of the day sells, that has not changed. But we have lost gameplay and content at the expense of pretty colours. Look at how much 'polishing' time is spent on graphical issues as compared to the rest of the entire game and you will see where the overwhelming priority lies.
What's the point? Why would anyone spend millions of dollars developing an MMO hardly anyone would play, when they could make the same MMO with 3d graphics so people would play it?
What's so magical about the gameplay in you 2d MMO that it couldn't be used in a 3d MMO?

im to lazy too use grammar or punctuation good
3D graphics mean better inmersion, is not 3D, but first person -ish view of the world. subjective view.
Investors like 3d games. Chess is an amazingly popular game. Why isn't it popular with investors? Because it is easily duplicated. Investors make money by being better than the competition. Therefore, mmorpgs must be 3d in order to provide a level of sophistication which isn't easily reproduced.
If it's an MMO thats focused more on depth and complexity, then yea, I think 2D graphics or "dated" 3D graphics could work. MMO graphics are always a step or two behind, so it's not like you're sacrificing much any way. And, just another point, but games managed to be immersive long before they had "modern" 3D graphics.
I know man! And why doesn't new music come out on 8tracks or cassete tapes? Just doesn't make any sense to me! OH, and how they only release DVD's now, complete BS!!! I WANT VIDEO TAPES!!!
It's called evolution, get used to it.
Enter Diablo III, more colorful than it's predecessors
"Why do new mmorpgs need to be fully 3d?"
For the same reason all TV's are now colour
new cars are fuel injected
It's the progression of technology and the acceptance of a given standard.
I would love to play a 2.5D game like Titan quest or Legend: hand of god (just with better character abilites). I loved games like Legend of Mir for the high detailed 2d graphics. These games would defently get ppl playing them - but sadly no MMO company is focusing on this kinda games now.
IMO 2d gives devs even more power to created something stunning. Cause its easier to create it rather than have 3d - where you will always have ugly spots no matter how hard you try to make it look cool.
Im all for a good 2D game ! Bring it on !
Evolution....
I made those dang Cassets and the 8tracks as well, (Husky injection mould) back in the days LMAO.
I could crank out 20,000 finished product on another 1.8 million dollor machine. The question is where are they now. Evolution?
If you want a simple, serious answer:
They don't have to make games in 2d anymore. Back in the day, that was the only option they had, now, graphics can really be pushed to extreme limits. Of course they are going to do that, they make most new games 3d now simply because: they can.
Games don't have to be 2d. However I probably won't play one. I hate top down views, couldn't stand the baldurs gate series for this very reason. And typically 3d games are just more visually appealing.
A 2d game would have to have some super good gameplay and content in order to get a decent number of people to overlook the 2d and pay for it.
Venge Sunsoar
Yup, this. ^^
The niche is probably there to create a 2D MMO and market it as an artistic homage to the forefathers of the genre, but I don't imagine it'll get much of a following.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
I wont play a game that doesnt have at least decent graphics sorry but just because many dont want to upgrade thier PC doesn't mean i should be punished because I do.
Because 2D belongs back in the 1980s.
2d has its benefits, though less so for MMOs in which you only play one character. Party based games, or those you need to see a tactical layout for, 2d (or birds eye view) is fine.
Additionally, less time spent on graphics means more time for creating in-depth gameplay. Depressingly I'm in the minority when I say I'll take gameplay over graphics ala Dwarf Fortress. But at least I have Dwarf Fortress so I'm happy.
Immersion for one thing, and as someone else states. The same reason we don't watch Black and White TV, run beige towers on 98 or use VHS tapes. Tech advances and so do we. It's another important area of gaming, like sound. No way in the burning place downstairs am I going back to 8 bit beeps and bops. Just the same there's no way I'm going back to 8 bit graphics. Granted something in the style of Diablo 2 and Icewind Dale/Baulder's Gate would be cool, but it wouldn't catch on.
