How did this happen?

How can Darkfall win the "most anticipated" game of the year? Age of Conan should have won this award hands down. There wasnt any game people were looking forward to this year more than AoC. My theory is it must be the timing.

Well, it was the most anticipated, but I guess people didn't vote on it because of the failure release.

Warhammer was hyped 1000x more than Aoc ever was.  Warhammer was meant to be the biggest wow killer ever, with the throngs and thrings of fanbois predicting millions of subs with in the first few months, and then eventually over taking wow by 2009.

Yes Aoc was hyped alot, but in no way was it ever hyped as much as Warhammer was.  Paul barnett and his idiotic podcasts, made certain of that.

Youre livin in a dream world if you think Warhammer was hyped more than AoC.

Do you really think there were more people who claimed War was gonna be a wow killer over AoC? I dont think so.

The thing is he is somewhat  right, AoC was hyped yes, but funcom never said they was making a WoW killer. In a interview they did estimate that the game would probably settle down on 250k+ subscribers. The ones who claimed AoC was a wow killer was the players that fell for the hype. Newspapers, gaming sites etc all fell for the hype and helped praise the game to the skies. Yes Funcom hyped the game, but the hype was also helped  A LOT by the media and players. People were praising AoC to be the ultimate WoW killer, gaming sites was telling how awesome this game would be without really putting any question mark behind their statements. The insane price for funcom stocks as hilarious, the Norwegian banks estimated the real value of the stock to be around 17 NOK, but thanks to the hype people bought this stock like mad, all wanting to be part of this new "oil adventure".

WAR was also hyped, much in the same way, players helped the hype go forth, but also the podcasts from devs and stuff like that was adding to the hype.

What game that was hyped the most can probably be discussed until eternity tho.

In a word yes. The only ones ever to hype a game, to that degree, were Mark Jacobs and Paul Barnett. Only one other game even comes close, and that is the Darkfall hallucinists. They have 1 week left to put up, or shut up.

There really are 1 of two things that are going to happen on the 22nd. The forums will be the biggest flame war, as "trolls" (as Tasos has labeled his non-believers) paint the largest I told you so in mmo history, and the fanbois try to get them banned for hurting their feelings with the truth. Or the forums are going to be altogether quiet, as the fanbois won't want to make themselves known.

Some of that existed when the beta testers were warning people about WAR, but at least they had a game to offer on their launch date...

Darkfall was the most anticipated game of the year.  EA Mythic and Fun.com just spent more money on advertising.  So you have an advertising campain angainst an true anticipated game.

Every time someone tried to warn everyone he was blitzed with "troll", "warhammer fanboi", "WoW fanboi" etc, etc.

This post isnt about Warhammer, its about why AoC should have won this award. IMO the only reason why it didnt win is because it released early in the year and not late like Darkfall (which I plan on trying).

Aw now come on, you have to admit the tragic comedy that is the Darkfall universe. Sometimes its even more fun to just watch than say... playing a REAL mmo. That reason and THAT alone, would be how DF could win.

As for being warned about AoC- completely agree. However, the people that knew anything about the game, knew that it was one that they were going to have to grow with if they wanted to play it. Not like WAR, where everything was a bed of roses, and the naysaying testers were told they weren't actually testers and just "some other trolls". This was followed by podcasts by Paul stating something to that affect. Yes AoC had its moments with Gaute's famous one-liners, but at least they were smart enough to get rid of him. If WAR can just get rid of PB and MJ, they might start doing better...

Seriously, at least Age of Conan's faith is in hands of Funcom.

The faith of Warhammer Online is in hands of Electronic Arts.

And you can bet on they will shut down the game in a hearbeat if it doesn't meet the financial expectations.

That's why I say that Warhammer Online right now has a much higher chance of being closed down in the very near future then Age of Conan.

Completely agree. EA hasn't been a design studio in a long, long time. It's a bunch of lawyers and CFOs over there now, and they aren't afraid to drop a game if it doesn't make it's payments on time, with interest. It is the reason they HAVE to keep buying companies. They drop them too fast.

The only reason Darkfall won is because it is being anticipated while people are voting. Nobody thinks back to how much they anticipated a game that is already released.

You no why nobody would say anything against warhammer?  Because eveyone wanted to believe it was good after the insane hype.  Yes everyone.  Yes the hype around this game was far freater than anything Aoc ever had.

Sites selling warhammer beta acocunts were selling accounts 2x the price thatof aoc accounts, along with other sites having more interest than anything aoc ever had.  Only need to take a look at the old beta leaks site, and look at the insane hype there was on those forums regarding warhammer.  Aoc was meant to kick blizzard in the knee, warhammer was meant to deliver the knockout blow.  The reason why people were contalty saying stuff about aoc, was because it was true, it was in no way ready for launch, where as Warhammer while maybe not as bug free as some would like, was in no way as bug ridden as aoc was.  This si why there were not as many doomsayers about War's launch.

    Seriously,

Age of Conan was maybe bugridden, but deep down it was a hell of fun game to play. It were the crashes, lack of itemisation and some pesky bugs in skills and attributes that made most people quit the game.

But still deep down it was fun to play and still would be after all bugs are fixed!

Now Warhammer Online wasn't bugridden and had a fairly smooth launch.

But the game is so simplistic when it comes to PVE, mob AI (what AI??), dungeons bosses (what scripting??) and class design!

The game was fun for a month or two and after that it became a boring chore!

PVE is boring as hell. Worst I have ever seen. I had a ton more fun grinding mobs in good old SWG!

Dungeons are extremely boring as well. It's the same PQ grind in there with the same boring unimaginative Tank & Spank bosses over and over again!

World RvR is also boring as hell in a given time, as every keep has the EXACT same layout and people are just PVE keep swapping now in Tier4 for the loot!

And the big fiasco of largescale battles around Fortresses.... well I guess I dont have to go into that.

Difference is, that Age of Conan can actually be fixed to become fun to play again! (except crafting needs overhaul, wich they are actually doing).

Warhammer Online needs complete system redesigns and overhauls, wich basically means redeveloping the whole game lol. Never gonna happen as EA will have pulled the plug long before.

    Cheers

What does that have to do with the fact that Warhmmer was hyped as being the next great saviour by every single fanboi here, with millions upon millions of subscribers in the first few months.?

On this site they were about equally hyped but "Motormouth" Barnett was hyping more than Erlingson, I never have heard anything like it...

There were about the same peole saying they were Wow killers but Barnett was one of those, no one on Funcom were that retarded.

DF won because of the timing, voting 2 weeks before release can only give one result.

The answer is Bullshit as pretty much everything else on this site. Just take a quick look through the reviews the MMORPG guys have been able to pull out of that place over the last years and you will know what the root of the problem is. Just wait, just wait till the MMORPG guys are going to try and review DarkFall. I am laughing already.

    QFT.

Barnett is just a funny version of Tasos. Well tries to be funny with second hand humour.

WAR was supposed to be the WoW killer. Why think MJ was so obsessed about WoW with all his comments that were getting him in to trouble.

    Although to add..

Age of Conan and war were not on the list lol http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/4/feature/2584/Most-Anticipated-Game-of-2008-Winner

Darkfall was in development and being hyped for 10 years so it deserves it way more.

AoC could get "most hyped" or "biggest let down."

Funcom has reviewed all of its assets relevant for

recognition of an impairment loss of around
3,1 MUSD for Age of Conan due to a decrease in
numbers of subscribers for the game. Funcom Q4 10 report.
