Mixing RAM: good or bad?

CrimsonkhanCrimsonkhan Member Posts: 6

Hi everyone!

So a little help here would certainly go a long way in helping me out...

Yesterday, I purchased two Corsair 1 gig memory sticks to upgrade my computer but I have the two 512 Mb memory sticks remaining...

I found that I can run all four memory sticks together for a total of 3 gigs of ram but I began to wonder if that is actually a good idea or not since they are different types and manufacturers.

My question is "is it more advantageous to run 3 gigs with mixed RAM or to run 2 gigs with the same with the Corsair RAM?"

Thank you in advance for your insight!

Generally it is frowned upon but I think the worst thing that happens is all sticks are attuned to the lowest common denominator.

    It's a Jeep thing. . .

i have used mixed ram fora  long time on various pc's and had no problems . i believe what u have to be careful of is that they are all the same speed etc . if nont they may still run but at the slowest memory speed . for example you have 2 x 1 gig running at 400 and the 2 x 512 rated at 333 your memory will be running at 333 . personally memory is so cheap now . or it was when i built my system i just gave my old chips away and brought from same supplier . Also another thing to consider is if they are all the same speed etc and size you can have dual channel instead of single channel . not sure how much  of a boost this gives you
