Graphic Card Question

TankSinatraTankSinatra Member UncommonPosts: 8

I don't know much about PC parts but here is my question. I own a Dell XPS  and the graphic card in there is a 768 Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX. The computer is a little over a year old with all the new parts coming out I wanted to maybe upgrade my Graphic card. The card I was looking at was a Single 512MB GDDR3 ATI Radeon 4850. My question is should I keep what I have or is this one a upgrade.

go 4870 or just keep the 8800.

I did a quick check of the cards you mentioned on Tomshardware.com  and it looks like the card performance is very close.  Unless the ATI 4850 was free I wouldn't bother, according to the charts you may actually see a decrease in performance running certain games/resolutions.

If you are going to upgrade you want to make sure you get your money's worth so look for at least a 20% increase in power.   Your 8800GTX is a great card (#2 on the market ) and the only other ones that will give a decent performance increase would be  ATI HD 4870 ( $ 300.00 ) or the GTX 280  ($ 350.00 ).

Honestly I would sit tight with what you have, but If I had the cash sitting around and really needed to upgrade my 8800GTX  I would go for the GTX 280. I think the 1024MG of memory would be the best investment you could make with some of the high resolution texture games that are out there.

    Good Luck,

I'm not sure if those Dell's come sLI ready or not, I stoped looking at dell products 5 years ago.  If the dell does support sLI, get the same card you have in there and slame it in.  vuala, you've got yourself double the performance

keep what you have... odds are your CPU is bottlenecking the vid card as it is.  If possible try overclocking for a performance increase.

Give your 8800 at least another year.. maybe longer.  If you really want to upgrade get a faster processor.

You definitely have a decent system, though I also question what you have for a CPU. However, even at that the CPU is usually not a bottleneck anymore, unless somehow you have an ancient one in there.
