Did anyone stop to think?

Did anyone stop to think that, judging by how so many people have so many varying opinions on different MMORPG, that maybe, just maybe, MMO isn't a very specific Genre like FPS, but rather a broad one that can be taken in many directions?

And if that's true, what the pork are you idiots arguing about? Who are you to say a game is bad when even one person thinks it's good?

I really don't understand the mentality, but I do feel that MMORPG should be separated more carefully into different Genres under it, maybe come up with a System for that based on underlying systems?

That way we can shut up these people that seem to think they know if something is in actuality "Good" or not, because at least that way people would goto their designated areas and leave each other the heck alone.

I second this notion. As it does make a very good point.

I thought the name of this site was mmorpg.com.  That sounds like a specific genre to me.

So we're all idiots for having an opinion now?  Where is the harm in debating the pro's and cons of a game, I thought that was what forums were for.  The only people who don't seem to like it are the ones who are completely blinded by their own views.

Just because I don't agree with somebody doesn't mean I can't listen to what they have to say.

People are entitled to their own opinions, as to whether things are bad or good or somewhere in the middle. I think, rather than it nessesarily being wrong to argue about such things, it does make the point however, that people should try things for themselves rather than nessesarily basing their opinions on what others have to say.

When looking for a new MMO, mmorg.com is my main source of information.

Some of the reviews give a good overview of games, and I have found them helpful in finding  games I like.

Every review ever written is only an opinion.

sorta like, fantasy, super hero, sci fi, etc?  yeah, i'm pretty sure most everyone made that distinction quite a while back.  but, please continue.
And if that's true, what the pork are you idiots arguing about? Who are you to say a game is bad when even one person thinks it's good?
debate, discussion, pondering how to make the games (in general) better?
    no?
    really?

it's called "hey, i recognize that's a fantasy game, that's why i'm comparing it to other fantasy games" or "themepark vs sandbox pros and cons" or any of quite a few themes.  porks eh?
That way we can shut up these people that seem to think they know if something is in actuality "Good" or not, because at least that way people would goto their designated areas and leave each other the heck alone.
but, i play games in several different genres, often at the same time...

Yeah, I second this. And it goes for all art (assuming, of course, that games are art, in this case). Barring poor craftsmanship, there is no "bad" art, and even poor craftsmanship is often a matter of opinion -- hell, look at those Twilight abomi-...er, novels.

    Spot on.

And this is the reason I debate against MMO FPS games here, MMO arcade games here, and MMO RTS games here against people who try to redefine the genre to suit their own needs.

The only idiot it seems is you for not reading the site name.

clearly the rpg part is close to misnomer. The term mmorpg applies to the broad range of games we play today and whether or not they're actaully RPG is the same as whether there is any duck in duck brand tape.

So drop the semantics the op has a point.

I like to argue my point, its fun.  Thats why I think so many people yell at eachother for the mmo's they play... Uh... Its fun to yell at someone and rub it in their STUPID FACE THAT MY MMO IS MUCH BETTER THEN THEIRS!!! SO EAT DIRT YOU STOOPID FANBOI . MUA HA

Honestly, "RPG" is a pretty damn meaningless term other than "inclusion of experience points", even in single player, so I'd hardly call it a specific genre.

It's ROLE Playing, but does that mean you take the role of an already created character or find your own role in a world that responds to your actions? Many so called 'RPGs' rely on the former but even in other genres the majority of games have you playing some role. Thus you throw in experience points and you have a 'RPG', apparently.

No no no....The OP is right...We should just buy every game because every game is beautiful and perfect....There is no need to argue anymore because there are no bad games.......

The reason why MMORPG covers such a broad base of games is that out of all the genres the MMORPG has the ability to be broad, and the developers are always thinking of ways to make their game stand out.  FPS you know you're just going to run around shooting things.  Arcade, you're playing minigames, like pacman.  Action, you're going to get an adrenaline rush by driving, killing, or some other way.  MMORPG however can fit into all those categories.  The main difference is that MMOs are online (duh) and you have an avatar to roleplay with (or well not these days, I miss the old days of EQ RP ).  Really MMORPGs can be any of the other genres in gaming, or a combination of many different genres, but none of the genres are MMORPGS.

  • IhmoteppIhmotepp Member Posts: 14,495

    The genre is fragmenting.

We've got your basic themepark game, like WAR, WoW, LotRO, EQ2, DAoC, etc.

Then there's your sandbox games like SWG pre-NGE, EVE, Ryzom,  and so on.

Then there's your MMO FPS, a genre I'm not particularly intereted in. A first person shooter, only massive! big deal.

Well, if Diablo is an RPG, and FF7 is also an RPG, the genre is not that specific to me.

  • RavanosRavanos Member Posts: 897

this is why i think MMOs need sub genres

MMO - World = sandbox MMO like Ryzom or EVE

MMO - Themepark = More linear game like WOW or WAR.

and so on and so forth

Sorry, i'm not so great with english, so my wording was poor.

I wasn't calling you guys idiots who are Debating and such, I mean the people who are like "This game sucks because it's lots of grinding" for example, that's stating a fact that isn't nessicarily true. People should say "I think", not it does, because they have no right to say that.

The point being is, I think there should be themes like "Theme Park" "Sandbox" "FPS" and maybe even more, clearly labeled so the people who don't like that theme will know to stay away from that theme, and not insult those who do like that theme.

I wasn't calling anyone an idiot, or "Porks", I said "What the pork", not "What a pork".

I just don't like seeing people state Opinion as if it's fact.

    What are you smoking?

FPS isn't a "very specific Genre" and MMOs are already separated into different Genres (MMOFPS, sandbox, linear, PVP-focused, PVE-focused, fantasy, sci-fi, casual, hardcore, traditional subscription, item shop.....)

Oh, and while I have your attention, why are we capitalizing the word "Genre"?
