Wut is patch?

Im downloading conquer online and i was wondering if and why i have to download the patches. wut are they? if u know plz post

    Online games are constantly being updated.  A patch is a modification of the game to fix bugs, add more items or content.  So in order to play the game you need to have the same version that the game has.  You will find that you have to patch quite often when you play an online game.  This is usually done automatically when you log on.
