Don't get despondent about feeling overwhelmed. I think that is the experience of most new players and has certainly been my experience thus far. I am also a new player and the game has a steep learning curve, but it pays to push through the barrier. As far as ships go, you will be very limited in what you can use until you train in ship commanding skills. My personal aim is to get into a cruiser or destroyer as quickly as possible.

However, something to take into account when training skills:

Training skills is slow and obviously slower as they increase in rank. Training the learning skills decreases the time taken to learn new skills. Some people suggest that a new player should spend their first month solely training learning skills, but this is incredibly boring. I have been switching between training learning skills and training combat/ship skills. This allows me to have some fun while also decreasing skill learning times. My suggestion would be to rank the skills:

    instant recall

    analytical mind

    instant recall

    analytical mind

    instant recall

    analytical mind

    instant recall

    analytical mind

    learning

    learning

    learning

    learning

then your other learning skills to rank 4 in whatever way you choose. I personally wouldnt bother getting them to rank 5 until you are more set in the game and understand things a bit more and are having fun. If you dont have these skills to train, you need to purchase them off the market.

As far as weapons go, I am not sure, am stil trying to work that stuff out myself. Best of luck, hope this helps :D

if you are minmatar, projectile weapons, gunnery, and to a lesser extent missile launcher and drones are your damage dealers.

if you are gallente, drones and hybrid turret (and gunnery) are your damage dealers.

if you are caldari missile lancher operation and hybrid turret (and gunnery) are your damage dalers.

if you are amarr, energy turret and gunnery are your damage dealers.

shield boosting and capacitor boosting skills are under engineering.

making your ship faster is under  navigation.

making your armor and hull better are under mechanic.

learning how to fly new ships is under space ship command.

skills for fleets and gangs are under leadership

stasis webs, warp disrupters and other pvp items are under electronics.

    I hope this helps :)

    Few things..

First, you should get Evemon and Eve Fitting Tool ASAP if you haven't already.  They'll help you plan skills and fit up your ships way better than any of the in-game tools.

Second, you should pick something to focus on and stick with it.  In EvE,  if you want to be good, you have to pick something early on to specailize in and train for it.  Once you master one area,  you can pick up additional specializations.  EvE exactly the opposite of most MMOs in this regard, in that in most MMOs you start with a wide choice of actions and are slowly narrowed to just a few paths in the 'end-game'.  EvE has no end game and as you gain skills you become able to do more and more things (though each individual 'thing' you can do in EvE is capped so you can't become super uber at one thing by training skills for it for five years)

Third, hit up the recruitment forums on the EvE site and try to get into a corp that matches your interests.  EvE University is also a good newbie corp.
