DFO vs MMORPG

methoskmethosk Member Posts: 57

So, just wanted to get everyones views on the diffrences between DFO forums and MMORPG forums. I have recently been checking out the DFO forums, and from the last time I lurked their to now, I noticed that the fanboysm increased by a large margin.

Back when I first checked out DFO I noticed that most people were still in the same stage as MMORPG, and that was about 30% fanboy, 30% hater, and 40% neutral. And I still attest that most people on MMORPG are still neutral who wish them luck but aren't expecting the world to end because of its greatness, and the distance between fans and haters are about average.

However, I was doing the same thing when I was into AoC pre-release, and notice a some what similar trend before release, but in quite opposite ways. Instead of the fanboys becoming more and more vocal, the Haters were carpet bombing the home site with talk of "incompleteness" and "no end game" etc. So, if that has any corolation to the current DFO situation, it makes me wonder that maybe there isn't a whole lot to complain about. Because I know for fact that even at risk of being "removed from beta", there would be serious leaks and vocalizing of opinions if there was anything near significantly wrong with this game. So it leads me to believe that all in all its a decent game that has people not wanting to be kicked out, or that there is some serious paper work (and muscle) behind the DFO NDA. (or there are no testers and everything is being made up by Tasos, but even for haters thats becoming more and more of a long shot)

Anyways, agree, disagree, poke hole in my logic, do as you wish. (And yes I do realize that I started out this thread in a completely different direction then I ended up taking it, but my bad I got cought up in the moment of typing)

My experience is that the DFO forums have got alot of new members since aug. 2008.  These new members have been very loud, and are eitherreally exited about the game or can't stand it.  Sometimes it even feels like some new members are only watching DFO because they are afraid that it will compete against a game they are waiting for,  and because of this they are constantly complaining about every little thing.

This means i feel like the haters are louder in the DFO forums from time to time, and especially whenever some bad news are out.  Like the recent delay.   But you still have the fanboys who are not tired of arguing with the haters, and try to keep the hopes up for everyone neutral or undecided.  But the loud fanboys are getting fewer and fewer, as they are tired of replying to the same stupid shit day after day.

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game

You are right, there is indeed nothing to complain about. And that is why you see so little complains.

Even on this forum there are not many game related complains. All complains are about the release, or lack of release.

The reason there is nothing to complain about doesn't have to mean that the game is decent. It can also mean that people don't know anything to complain about, because nothing is known. All the features that are known about darkfall are the ~8 year old initial concepts. No one knows (except the beta testers, if they really exist) how many of those initial concepts actually made it in the final game.

You can't complain that feature X is bad, because you don't know if the game still has that feature. You can't complain that feature Y is bad, because you don't know feature Y even exists, since it's not in the initial concept.

You could argue about features listed in a beta leak report, but you have no way to know if it's valid or made up.

For example, there was a recent beta leak where an alledged beta tester said that the world feels empty to him, there are hardly ane npcs or monsters.

So you could complain about that.

But can you really? Or was that beta leak fake, and would you be making a fuss about nothing?

One big difference between DarkFall and AoC Betas though...

    The number of people!

By the Beta leakers accounts there are only a couple hundred Beta Testers.  Many of those are personal friends or family of Tasos or other Devs.  Most of the rest are friends of those friends.

That doesn't leave a very big pool to get un-biased information from.

IF they do allow a large number of people in starting on the 22nd... then it will be interesting to see what kind of reviews we see.  IF the vast majority of those remain  positive... then DarkFall is probably in pretty good shape.

The status of the NDA and the lack of letting reporters from mmorpg.com review the game says to me that something is not right.  Unfortunately, until Tasos actually follows through on one of promises... we won't know for sure one way or the other.

Hopefully, starting with the 22nd we will start to see some of Tasos' promises start to materialize.

    LOL, my thoughts exactly.

Honestly, I don't even care about the game one way or the other anymore...I just tune in to see what crap Tasos spews out of his mouth next, and how much people will suck it up while others shake their head in shock at the fact that people eat that crap up as if it makes any sense what so ever.

I have no idea how good the game is/isn't I only know that the way they've handled the PR and the few aspects that we DO know about are pretty scary, and not condusive to creating a positive outlook on the future of the project.

One thing though...Love it or hate it..everyone is back here every day to see what the hell Tasos does next...

Hell, it would almost be worth buying the box just to show our appreciation for a decade of entertaining forum wars.

I should think that there would be substantially more Darkfall fans on their own official site.  For the most part, I read MMORPG.com because I'm interested in MMOs in general. This isn't the first place I go for specific help or information about an MMO I'm playing or I'm interested in playing..   If there is an unreleased MMO that I'm interested in and they have a board, I'll go there from time to time.  People who frequent an official board are more likely to be real enthusiasts for that particular game, or at least you would think they'd have a higher number of fans rather than detractors.  You want to encourage the developers of a game you're interested in playing. Someone who spends a lot of time on the official board for a game that's still just in development, I would think is more positive about it and wants to play rather than just discuss it in a general way.

I don't read the official Darkfall forum so I don't have any first hand knowledge of how people behave there.   Sometimes I follow a link, but that's about it.  I used to read it years ago when I still thought there was a good chance of a decent game being published. Everything I just wrote is simply a guess.

As for your second paragraph, I don't really agree.  My feeling is that the reason there aren't many real beta leaks is because the people in the beta are hand-picked friends who Aventurine is certain will keep everything quiet.  That makes more sense to me.  Personally, I don't know if there is even a real working beta.  I haven't felt any of the few alleged leaks I've heard come from a source I would consider reliable.  None of them came from anyone I'm familiar with or whom I've heard of before.  I haven't read a preview yet or even a proper review from the gaming press.  Not that I mind.  I have a feeling I'm probably happier being in the dark on this one.  It'll make what ever eventually happens more interesting.  Not that I think any thing is going to happen.  At all.  Ever.    Again, all just my guessing!

You cant compare the two sites....One is a fansite of that particular game....Of course youre going to have alot of fanbois there......This website hosts hundreds of games and there are fans of many different games here.......If you just want to hear "darkfall is the greatest game ever" then stick to their site.....If you want alot of different opinions then you come here......

    It's very simple, really.

Darkfall forums = official game forums. This means that subjects are more heavily moderated, and you will have more of a concentration of fans of a game there, with any criticism or questioning of the developers met with either a series of flames, a thread being locked, or a user being banned by the mods.

MMORPG forums = public forums about a variety of games. There will be more of a concentration of fans of the MMO genre itself, since the forums cover so many different games and game styles. People will say things about whatever game you're waiting for or that you play that you might not like, but which they have the right to say since the forums here are more open.

If someone doesn't want to read criticism of a game or its developers, or questions about their business practices, they're better off hiding at the official forums. If they're secure enough to handle a wide variety of topics about a game that don't all involve how awesome a game is or how much of a WoW killer it will be when it finally launches, they'd be more comfortable at an open forum.

Personally, I only go to the official forums for the games I play when I've got a technical issue and I want to find a solution, or I'm stuck on a quest, and I want to find some information. By and large, I'd rather come here since discussions are going to be far more open, with a wider variety of opinions being thrown around.

    DFO = communist/fascist

    MMORPG = capitalist democracy

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

    a) You're assuming there are some DFO beta players.. there's your wrong assumption! :D

    b) AoC "haters" were right.
