Do you demand a list of references before eating at a new restaurant? Do you insist on getting a review before renting a movie? Hell, do you read reviews before buying single player games?
... especially given that reviews are pretty much worthless. The most popular products in any market are generally below average in quality. Why would you listen to someone else tell you what is and isn't fun?

i think what the OP is talking about is dont order the game until you know for sure it exists. he stated nothing about whether people liked it or not.
There's plenty of evidence it exists. Press releases from companies that are partnering to handle production or host the game servers. Beta leaks. Videos from Aventurine. Official posts from the developers. Members of the press who have played the game at Aventurine's HQ.
What the people on this site have a problem with is:
1. Aventurine isn't following the script/timeline they're used to from other games.
and
2. These are mmorpg.com forums - Several posters would like nothing better than to see the game fail.

There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Im pretty sure when I sit down in a restaurant Im going to get the food I ordered. If I buy a movie ticket Im betting there will be a seat, a screen, and an actual movie playing.
I have no idea if Darkfall exists or not so no way in hell would I preorder it

I believe the OP was pointing out not to 'pre-order' the game before knowing first that it indeed without a doubt does exist. He did not mention anything at all about whether or not you should buy it depending on if the game is fun or not.
Furthermore, eating at a restaurant for the first time and pre-ordering a unreleased game are two totally different scenarios to say the least. When you walk in a restaurant, it is a actual place surrounding you that serves food that you are able to witness and visualize. So therefore you know at least one thing, whether the food you order is good or bad, at least it will be real. On the other hand, pre-ordering a copy of a game such as Darkfall is risky, especailly when the developers keep promising certain beta and release dates and then breaking them. So therefore, you have no actual proof that the game you are thinking of pre-ordering actually truly exist or not.
I have to agree with the OP. I think it would be wise to not pre-order the game, until you know for sure there is infact actually a real game to be released.

I'm saying that the amount of fear people on these forums seem to have that - *horror* someone else might pay for a game they don't like - seems to be a bit contrived. Several of the names are people who trashed other games I got my money's worth out of. There is not a single scrap of evidence that Darkfall *doesn't* exist, and plenty of evidence that it does.

By your reasoning Santa Claus is real because there are tons of videos, stories and images of him over the last few hundred years.

There's absoloutley no evidence that the flying spaghetti monster does not exist and plenty it does! Look at all the pics that Tasos has provided of the flying spaghetti monster and all his friends who claim to know the monster and commune with him everyday! Also he has videos on youtube of him playing with the fllying spaghetti monster although they all seem to be edited from the same two or three videos it's still proof!
Personally I'll believe it when they allow Jon Wood to play with the flying spaghetti monster and he sends reports and videos confirming it, however Tasos has refused this request on many occasions. Apparently only his close family and friends are allowed to play with the monster for now.
BTW can I interest you in buying a signed copy of Eric Von Dankens "Chariots of the Gods" for a mere $50 and a sub of $15 a month?

Santa Claus, the being, is not real. Santa Claus, the product, very much is, and is in fact one of the fundamental drivers of Western Civilization - our economy is utterly dependent on those presents being under that tree come Christmas dawn.
And that's exactly my point. Just because you don't have proof in the fashion you want to have it in does not mean there is no evidence for the reality of Darkfall. Economic realities and companies that don't get to play "make believe" with their balance sheets. Banks giving out loans, production companies saying the game is about to launch, the server hosting company issuing press releases. For it all to be a conspiracy, all those companies would have to be in on it. And quite frankly, if they're willing to work that hard at it, they can have the $50 bucks.
lol dude come on the game is real is it gonna be a great game who the hell knows but i will indeed pre-Order if thay take my $$ and run that sucks but ive blew 60 bucs of worse things ! and at least i didnt get 20 gigs of crap downloaded on my hardrive like when i bought AoC

So this is the "Twist and squirm" phase of the debate where you try to derail any logic so as to make your argument seem legit?
As for the last part of your statement I direct you to MCI Worldcom and Enron. They played make believe with thier books, they swindled legit investors, they screwed people over. The investors who invested in Brokerage firms that looked legit that just happened to take the money and run? They saw a pretty convincing company on paper too.

Just as those that purchased PotBS, Tabula Rasa, AoC, WAR were victimized by the hype and met by the doldrum of another reskinned PvE, overly-developed single-player, environmental controlled RPG package.

Nice try...
Do OTHER people eat at that restaurant? If so, how does that apply to Darkfall?
Does the movie actually EXIST? If so, how does that apply to Darkfall?
Bad reviews are one thing but paying for a game that we aren't even sure functions is another. This is looking like Dark and Light all over again. Hell, we don't even know the recommended computer specs for this game yet -- This is something developers know a full year before release... We know NOTHING factual about this game.
I hope you preorder and get screwed after we have spent so much time warning everyone.
Go read up on Dark and Light before you give Aventurine your credit card information... It might save you some headache.
I just don't see how so many people still put faith in Tasos. The game has been beset by constant delays and refuses to give out any info and then says a free trial type thing will begin on the 22nd but only sends out a small number of invites and leaves the NDA in place.
How well do you think Adventurine is going to take care of Darkfall considering their track record before the game is even released? Constant delays that can never match Blizzards Soon, not wanting to give out info, wanting to take peoples money for pre-orders while leaving the game in a NDA and not even giving the press at least some info. I honestly think their 'no classes and no levels' system is going to fail. I just don't see how the skill system will accomplish what the purpose of a MMO is with the whole progressing your charactar and seeing it grow which I cannot see the skill system accomplishing.

How would you know if other people eat there? Do you only check their references if no one is in when you stop by? Or do you stake the place out to make sure it's legit?
There's no proof the movie exists until it shows up on the screen. Sure there's advertisements and posters and buzz and the word of the production company ... but proof that a casual person has before buying the ticket? Hell, we've gone to see movies I didn't even know existed until passing by the theatre and seeing the advertisement out front.
I'd be willing to donate the $50 if it got me in beta, actually.

Or you could do what most people do; Word of mouth.
Friends will see a movie, eat at a resturant, etc. If I am skeptical about it, I wait to hear what they have to say about it. Same goes for games.
Holding a game in NDA upto release is preventing word of mouth, and always for one reason: The Game Is Bad. If a company is sure of thier product they will drop the NDA. If they know thier game will fail to get the sales it needs from the start they keep the NDA and claim its all sunshine and roses.
I mean if your willing to give money to a company with a shady product, thats fine. But to get annoyed when someone tells others to not drop hard earned money on a product until they actually see it is just retarded.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
When a restaurant or a movie makes you sign an agreement of silence for 5 years after your meal or viewing, your terribly flimsy analogy might have a bit more weight.
If they were to withhold nearly all information until it was time to open my wallet, I might have a problem going there. If the only trailer came out 2 years ago, and they've not let a single member of the press review the movie, I'd probably think it's because the movie is not so good. Historical precedent and all that, when studios think that they'll get poor reviews.
I'd be willing to donate the $50 if it got me in beta, actually.
Are you still trying to present yourself as an objective consumer?

From my point of view, try before buy. I am not going to spent 1 more cent on games with out try them first.
But, you will be surprised how many nubs will preorder the game, and after that will spam different forums talking about the bad experience.
Yeah.. 50$.. i can do lots of other things with 50$..
Friends will see a movie, eat at a resturant, etc. If I am skeptical about it, I wait to hear what they have to say about it. Same goes for games.
If that were actually the case, no one would ever do anything because no one would ever be first. Face it - what generally happens is you don't even credibly consider the possibility that the movie or restaurant is a scam. You certainly may not partake if you think you won't like it, but people don't insist on "being a smart consumer" for incidental purchases. If they're charging money, have a credible facade, and you think you'll like the product, you pay and don't think twice about it because the probability of being wrong is low and the consequence of being wrong is pretty much negligible.

Absolutely. With these tough economic times, everyone needs to conserve money.

Banks giving out loans, production companies saying the game is about to launch, the server hosting company issuing press releases. For it all to be a conspiracy, all those companies would have to be in on it. And quite frankly, if they're willing to work that hard at it, they can have the $50 bucks.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
.. and this is how internet if full of peoples who will preorder (again) a crapy game...
Santa Claus, the being, is not real. Santa Claus, the product, very much is, and is in fact one of the fundamental drivers of Western Civilization - our economy is utterly dependent on those presents being under that tree come Christmas dawn.

Please make a sentence from these words,
his, are, a, and, parted, fool, easily, money
The winner gets a Darkfall pre-order for only $1000!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

"A fool and his money are easily parted."
But I am going to have to refuse and let Sarg01 claim the winning prize of pre-ordering Darkfall for only $1000, seeming he wants it so bad.

Are you still trying to present yourself as an objective consumer? How would you know if other people eat there? Do you only check their references if no one is in when you stop by? Or do you stake the place out to make sure it's legit?

From my point of view, try before buy. I am not going to spent 1 more cent on games with out try them first.
But, you will be surprised how many nubs will preorder the game, and after that will spam different forums talking about the bad experience.
Yeah.. 50$.. i can do lots of other things with 50$..
