wtf? i havnt played the game in a couple of years, thought 'i know, ill try the trial out, to see if it still interests me' so, i download the trial, install it, create an account, log in... and BAM almost 6 hours of patches to download? wtf? for the bloody trial? if i remember it the trial doesnt let you go off the noob island? wtf do i have to waste 6 hours of my day, and also of my 14 day trial, downloading bloody patch content that i very much doubt has anything whatsoever to do with me
on a less whiney note... what classes shall i try?!?! iirc i never really got a character past 20, i think my highest two chars were a priest archtype and the assassin archtype (both evil)...
i figure ill try shadowknight... dunno what else though, what are rangers like?

you are downloading the entire game - when you download the trial
I agree
the trial should be a smaller client

no longer true
you can start in Greater Fay and maybe some other starting areas
I tried the trial, a year ago, before Kunark
I'm not sure if the trial now lets you play in other newer areas like DarklightWoods or Kunark starting area

as long as i can get to freeport im happy i think, unless theres cool new things in these new starting zones? ive only ever started new characters on the isle, so i wouldnt know, if you think its worth going to a new one let me know and ill try it
still cant decide on a class to try, i think im gonna go over to the eq2 official forums and have a read...
what classes are good at soloing these days, that preferably arent pure int casters? i read somewhere here that its possible to solo to 80 with any class due to some questline or other, but i dunno if im gonna actively seek out this quest line just to be a loner for 80 levels, its an mmo afterall
I don't think there is any resriction on where you start and how far you can get during the trial! I recall playing last fall and started a DE and ran down to Timourous Deeps to play with some friends.
It's been a long time since I used the trial, but one thing I recall is that those on the trial are restricted in their ability to communicate server-wide. This is done in order to keep the gold spammers from constantly signing up for trials.
Hope you like the game!

Timorous Deep is the best starting area in game -- it launched with Kunark
has fantastic quest rewards, best in game under 20 and I personally found the quests to be fun too
races that can natively start at Timorous Deep are listed here
eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Gorowyn
only evils can get housing there
but any race can run over there to quest -- the guards will not attack you
good, take carpet to SS - take SS carpet to BB docks and then take a griffon thats south of the docks
evil, take carpet to SS - take SS carpet to Gorowyn
if you do like the game, only need to subscribe
the trial promotion includes a complimentary "all-in-one" Kunark that has everything but last expansion
unless you want the bear mount that comes with the Retail box of The Shadow Odyssey

thanks for the replies guys, im about to start reading through those links youve all posted, though i thought 6 hours was bad, i went downstairs with 1 hour left on the timer, have dinner, watch a film etc, come upstairs like 4 hours later, and 9 hours 40 minutes left on the timer? wtf? i just wanna play the fucking trial, not watch the station downloader all weekend, im at work all tomorrow, so weekend wasted it seems
STILL cant decide on a class either
Unfortunately is not just SoE which does it.
Few months ago I downloaded Final Fantasy trial and I had to download the entire game.
Problem was that the UI and commands were so bad, that I played it a couple of hours, so it was worth it...................not.
Developers should make smaller version of the client for their trials, I really don't think it takes too many resourses.
PS: Fury is fun if you want to try a class, not the best of healers but good dps and decent buffs.
After 3 hours the load bar finally finished, then a new one started and now it's 9 more hours, I hope it's worth it.
Not really, all you're gonna find is a post-apocalyptic version of WoW! Yeah it looks ok, but it is very easy now and most encounters were changed to soloable instead of group; as well most instances are skippable and worthless.
I played in Dec with the new expansion and was at the cap in under 3 weeks and then it was just raid farming...yay joy! Left cause of the RMT BS and it got very boring!
the leveling in EQ2 is faster than it used to be, but certainly not as fast as WOW
I have never raided in EQ2 -- and I have 2 80s (over the course of many months)
unlike WOW and LOTRO,
EQ2 has the mentoring system that lets me re-visit old content / dungeons from earlier levels
and still be challenged by them (not like a WOW 80 running Deadmines for friends)
I wish all mmos had something like the mentor system, but at least EQ2 is one of the few that offers this

Is LoTRO or FF XI Online any better? I'm also downloading the trials for them.
only you can answer that question
I personally didnt like LOTRO enough to subscribe after the trial
but plenty of people enjoy LOTRO
try the trials and hopefully you will find a game to spend some time with

The trial comes with all the previous adventure packs and expansion packs (except that last one). That would account for the long download time. Either that or you are using dialup. I would have thought that they would just give you the basics and only download the rest when you subscribed, but they may just give it all to you up front.
Regardless of this specific case, I found EQ2 to be one of the most constantly patching games I have ever tried or played. There seems to be a patch every week and sometimes almost every day. Sometimes they're short and quick.. other times they take a while. But I always find my self surprised at the frequency of patches.
I have the full client installed with a couple of expansions. I stopped playing for a while and came back after the release of the last expansion.. took me about 3 nights of patching to catch up and I didn't even buy that expansion.
I guess it's a good thing in a way..
As for the class decision.. I enjoyed my swashie very much.
I played LoTRo in late beta and I personally didn't like it. Didn't hate it either. It just felt like a clone to me nothing original or capturing.
But that's just my personal opinion. And to be honest, it seems pretty popular now that I sometimes wonder if I should try it again. One thing i'll say though... this notion that you hear sometimes about killing the same creatures over and over under different names felt very true. You kill a dog looking animal at levels 1-10 then the same dog with a bit scarier name at levels 11-20 and so on...
I have been in this spot you're in now where i'm looking for an mmo to play and I can offer two advices:
1) Never cast a game off based purely on negative feedback from others without trying it no matter how bad they make it seem to be.
2) Don't try more than one mmo at a time. If it's trials you're doing, do one all the way to the end before trying another one. (Unless said trial bores you to death

I beta'd LOTRO and tried it again (because people seem to love it so much) a couple months ago.
I hated it in beta and I can't stand it now. Its just a clone of other games with different window dressing and monster play added.
As to the rest of what you said, I completely agree.
If i sign up for the trial, but install my original EQ2 DVDs, will i still have to download the "trail"?
(sorry ahead of time if this had already been mentioned)

As far as I know you'll just have to download the massive amount of updates from the time since you got the DVDs - it can definitely take a very long time.
For FFXI's trial, I recommend following the advice of the NPCs you interact with, starting with the opening cut-scene.
You will receive an "Adventurer Coupon" and be instructed to go give it to a certain NPC (you will trade it to the NPC). That NPC will, in turn, give you some starting gil and point you to another NPC. This last NPC will give you a series of new player quests which will help you learn some of the game's basics, as well as giving you some beneficial items to help you along.
*Do* pay attention to what the NPC's say. Do *not* just skip through the dialog without reading it. FFXI is one of the few MMOs still around where you really need to read and pay attention to what NPCs tell you. I say this because I know a few people who tried out the game, skipped through the dialog for the newbie quests ('cause they hate reading in a game) and got frustrated by "not knowing what to do". If you read the dialog and follow them, you will do fine and will get a feel for how FFXI presents its content... A couple will require you to figure a couple things out for yourself (such as when you're prepared to move to a more difficult area), but it's nothing that some common-sense won't fix :-p.
Just wanted to say that bit.
