I play VG and enjoy it.

But comparing Eve with VG is comparing a Deathstar with a steam driven aeroplane.

The game has qualities I miss in other games and faults I have to shake my head over. In the end its a game of the EQ genre,  probably the best of them, which is sadly a dying breed. People who enjoy such games should give VG a try, there is a 14 day trial available. Reading the official VG forum might be a wise idea too to get an overview about the state of the game.

I am struggling a bit with what the OP was on about: if it's about unique game ideas that exist in VG as compared to other recent MMOs, I'd have to agree with some things. I both really liked and really hated VG.

However, it's a moot point to state what I liked and didn't like seeing as the main issue is lack of population. To me, the second issue is that the game is being run by SoE which seems to have a tendancy of ruining every game it gets its grubby hands on.

Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.

Yeah ok chill out. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings....well.....actually no I'm not. I couldnt give a shit actually lol.

But as I clearly stated yes I have played the game. I resubscribed to the thing twice over the space of several years. Oh and when you say "really" played it I suppose that means sitting through the entire game a zillion times and "exploring" (ha! yeah right!) 99.9% of the map because of course no-one can make an informed judgement about an mmo unless they have dedicated months of their life to playing it can they.....oh no no.

Oh and I love the line "Vanguard is the EVE Online of fantasy games" bit. Absolutely brilliant! This line of complete bullshit shows you up for the Vanguard Disciple you are. Oh sorry now its my turn to say "Have you ever played EVE? I mean REALLY played EVE" No you havent. You have no clue what your talking about......blah blah blah etc etc (insert additional school kid retorts here at your own leisure).

Sorry to break this to you but Vanguard is NOT a thinkers game at all. EVE however is. In fact EVE is as far away from this game as it is from every generic fantasy mmo around. EVE is also a competitive PvP game which many people find rather difficult to get into because of its complexity. Vanguard on the other hand is a themepark PvE game.

In Vanguard you do all the brainless kill this, kill that, click on this crap that we have all seen before in every other mmo. Whats there to think about? Come on give me a situation in Vanguard where clever thinking will get you ahead in the game......especially in a game which is not competitive and your only opponent is a dumb monster with poor AI that only attacks you when you walk within a few metres of it. Of course I realise for you that Vanguard may indeed seem like a real brain melter of a game but thats your problem. Others have higher standards than you . Sorry.

Well I guess out of all the posters we know who is under the age of 15.  I respect your thoughts however I fail to understand your swearing and anger a game is a game.  I also never said that thinking was a feature of Vanguard as with any game we play either console or PC its about getting away from life and not thinking not completely mickmicking life as you do in EVE as for you I am sure you like EVE because of one feature that most of the diehard EVE fans have, and that is noone will ever catch up to you no matter what you do.

Oh so I'm under 15 am I? Really? You are of course completely wrong BUT you are right about one thing. Its absolutely true that you never said that thinking was a feature of Vanguard. Do you know why that is? Its because.....

I WAS NOT REPLYING TO YOUR POST YOU SILLY TWIT!!!

If you bother to scroll up you will see that Atomic said that......ya know the person that I was replying to? How on earth did you think I was talking to you? You must have actually read Atomics post and then my reply and somehow reached the conclusion that you wrote it. Either you have an alter ego who posts under the name of Atomic or you do too many drugs. Oh and yeah so I used some swear words. Oh boo hoo isnt the world a terrible place. I used swear words appropriately however to get across my opinion of Atomic and the childish way in which he worded things to me. I give respect where I feel its due.....and in Atomics case (who I bet you actually IS under 15) respect most definately was not due.

Oh and just for your information I thought I should let you know that we live on a planet called Earth and we currently dont have the ability to fly around the universe in spaceships. Your statement about EVE not being a form of escapism from real life and somehow "mimicing real life" is just plain old stupid. I highlighted your line of text so you can see how silly it is.

Your final bit about people not being able to catch up in EVE is just the icing on the cake. What the hell are you talking about?! Go and check out the EVE forums and learn a bit about the game before you talk complete nonsense about a game you never even played. Loads of people have this messed up idea that because of the way pilots improve in EVE then you will never catch up with people that have been playing for years. Thats not the bloody point of the game! Its one of the things that sets it apart from all the other mainstream mmos with the same close-minded level-focused mindset that they foster. A person who has been playing for years is NOT godlike like you would be in one of the more basic mmos. They have a small advantage in skills and have more choice in what they can do (wider variety of skills). However they cannot bring ALL of their skills into use at the same time......only a small sub-set of the skills relevant to the ship they are flying. Also have you noticed what advantage these skills tend to give? Each skill increase tends to give a 2-5% advantage. Its trivial! Even when certain skills are totally maxed out you might be lucky to get a 20% advantage......and thats with that particular skill only.

This is why in EVE beginning characters can actually compete with and defeat older players. Character skills do play a part but the players knowledge of the game, the decisions he makes and the allies he flies with (if any) play a much bigger part in it. This is part of the reason why EVE is so different to more mainstream themepark level-based games like Vanguard. There is no "I win" button in EvE but in level based games there is because you win by default if you have a lot more levels than someone else. Then again this is a moot point for Vanguard as there is no competition in the game and therefore no real challenge and ultimately very little requirement to use your brain.......which was why I originally pointed out to Atomic that comparing Vanguard to EVE is just totally ridiculous. They're totally different games. One requires thinking and one doesnt.

Theres a reason the game failed at launch, and a reason when you log on its DEAD, empty. It offers nothing different. Vanguard is the one of the most "tried and failed" mmo's out there. They tried to put features of other mmo's into one.

When you talk about others 15y old or WOW with nothing but kids..lol 11mil  of them? Yet every thing your saying about Vanguard is true... blah blah blah..

See we been there and know the game. You just found out and like it. So go play it, have fun.

You're a rather strange individual. You keep changing the topic of what you are talking about and then patronise everyone else who posts a reply because they are not jumping to your alien tune.

EQ2 has group combos as well by the way. Its not a new thing. In fact every game brings its own slant to how combat plays out in these game so whats the big deal about Vanguards combat system? It seemed pretty ordinary to me.

I think its pretty safe to say that the only thing Vanguard brought to the table was the way that players can choose to level their characters without having to fight anything through diplomacy and crafting. Thats a rather nice idea. Unfortunately it just wasnt implemented very well in Vanguard. I think for me personally it just highlighted one of the big weaknesses of themepark PvE mmos - Storytelling. By playing the game focusing on diplomacy or crafting you literally are just reading an online book. There is no skill or challenge involved. There are also no real choices to make. Its pretty much the online game equivalent of a join-the-dot drawing puzzle. You just do what the game tells you and read the text it shows you and then move onto the next bit of text until eventually you have read all of the text. No requirement for thinking or any real decision making at all. Wow! What fun!

There is no real challenges for crafting? No skill? YOU, my friend, have obviously NOT tried crafting at it's fullest in Vanguard, I even doubt that you've ever played the game. The crafting system in Vanguard is one of the most complex i've ever seen in a game. It's not just click this click that use hammer or pick axe. You need to carefully use several tools at the same time, you got more than one option while crafting, more or less up to ten, and things can go wrong, and if something does go wrong, you need to have a special tool for that as well. No challenge, eh?

Try the crafting on Isle of Dawn, now threre's a story-line, yes while crafting.

Please try the game before you make a fool out of yourself. Giving you a link here as well, click on it, you might learn a thing or two ;)

The crafting system itself is amazing in VG. A bit like a clever minigame.

The problem is there's no incentive to craft anymore. It's just a waste of time. Kill a couple of mobs left & right, loot some blues and you dont need to craft or buy crafting gear.

Most common loots are equal or better to what you can craft.

SOE/Silius managed to turn one of the best mmo crafting system into a pointless sidegame.

    this is BS....

My lvl 32 bard has more then 50% of his stuff crafted and I only recently replaced my crafted weapons with ones from two epic quests.  Yes there are quests you can do that will give you better items but they require a lot of work and the crafted items are sometimes still better because they can be made to order.  Crafted stuff is why better then blue items.  Maybe you are talking about common crafted stuff which is about the same as blues but again can be tailored to you.  Where rare crafted stuff is better then yellows.

And as is the case with every game when you hit the end game then yes crafted items start to fall behind raid drops etc.  But from lvl 1-50 there are ample times when players will need crafted gear esp if they are wanting to skip some of the epic quests which is almost inevitable if you don't do like I did an disable your xp a lot.  Personally from 20-30 I think I spent at least half of the time with my xp off so I could do all the epic quests but I still used a lot of crafted items.

I do as well wonder why there seems to be so many random pepole writting allmost the same sentence :) Conspericy as it best.

And Vanguard is really a good mmo, one of the better actually, that has everything that makes an mmo great in my eyes - a damn fine community, lots of thing to explore and conquer. A damn fine time killer in other words. And just becuse it hasnt +10.000.000 pepole it dosent have to be a  bad game as you seem to say with "If Vanguard was really such a good game then loads of people would be playing it. However they arent playing it because the majority of them know exactly how terrible it actually is."  Biggest dosent always have to be the best you know.  And of  course the game has it flawless that I sometimes wonder how they could sneak past the beta stadium, but I do prefer an unpolised diamond rather than a polished and shinny opal (I do prefer VG than Wow in other words).

so basicly its EXACTLY the same as every other mmo except that it has the additional "challenge" of not knowing where they all are.

Oh yes. Right on spot. That is what I like about Vanguard. I dont feel like there is a path that I need to follow. To bad it didnt suit you. But please dont use it as an negative aspect just becuse you didnt like it. Everyone cant share the same taste of things you know.
